  1. That's just stupid. I mean I understand the SGPC wanting to give Sikhs a greater sense of unity through their maryada etc...but this decision is plain stupid...they shouldn't be allowed to do this
  2. High priests would now need SGPC permission for religious visits TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ TUESDAY, OCTOBER 05, 2004 02:57:26 AM ] AMRITSAR: The executive committee of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has restricted the movement of high priests, including Akal Takht jathedar , kirtani jathas , hazuri ragis and preachers. Now, their visits within the country and abroad for religious purposes would be approved by SGPC. They also would not be allowed to accept direct invitations for attending religious functions. This was stated by SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur while presiding over the first executive committee meeting on Monday. She said the decision was taken keeping in mind the priests' demand at home. She appealed to the Sikh sangat of the country and abroad to send their invitations directly to SGPC. She said a particular hazuri ragi jatha or kirtani jatha would be allowed to leave abroad only once in two years adding that all the previous individual invitations have been cancelled . The executive committee have also constituted a five-member subcommittee that would consult with senior advocates to contemplate over the promotions and transfers affected in the committee in the recent past. She said the committee secretary Dalmegh Singh would hold a meeting with government officials in Delhi for the Galliara project on October 6. The SGPC's delegation, which was to visit Pakistan to take account of the attack on Gurdwara Nankana Sahib, would leave on September 7. Jagir Kaur said she was still not aware of entrustment of kar sewa to Akali Dal, Delhi. Wtf? I really don't know too much about the many institutions within Sikhi, but this just doesn't sound right to me...
  3. I think the "robots in disguise" comment is meant to convey that Sikhs just follow blindly. Without thinking for themselves. Not my view, but what I think the poster was trying to convey (this is based on his/her other posts).
  4. On the note of driving, how many of you are enthusiasts..I mean care about the performance of your car...how fast have you gone?
  5. Saloon, I'm assuming means Sedan...right?
  6. Both actually, but I will say that I would only fight if someone hurt me physically or someone I care about in any way.
  7. Haha, the only person I ever remember using that was my 6th grade Gym teacher....
  8. Just wanted to point out that Bin Laden killed many innocent people, which is wrong even if you feel you are fighting for a greater cause. I don't recall Sant ji killing innocent people to get his message across. See the difference in terrorism. Wether Bin Laden's points are valid is irrelavent, no need to kill innocent people. If you hate the US fight our army and then see.
  9. I don't know sukhi, Sodhi said I have a free pass between both worlds..so....I like that idea. This world scares me, lol.
  10. I think this thread can be locked now. Simply because all the questions that have been asked have been answered in a very fair and kind manner. Also because if the one asking is not willing to see anything in an objective light then this is really a waste of time. I do not see what else you want Jagdip. If you look on the first page of this post some very good answers have been given. And on the topic of hair; there are a few reasons why Sikhs keep hair. For one it is because we consider it a gift from god, and if god gives you a gift you cherish it. Two, it was said by Guru Gobind Singh ji, that Sikhs should keep their hair so as to provide a unique identity. I believe there was a quote along the lines of: my Sikh will be seen in a crowd of 1,000. It was to empower Sikhs to fear no one especially the Mughals at the time trying to covert everyone. I also invite you to your own thought. You told others questioning Christianity to read the bible; well then I encourage you to read SGGS, or other Sikh literature. Your questions have been answered, if you are still not satisfied, then please be my guest and read some.
  11. haha, she's so right...I get everyone asking me to do things for them...was fun cause i got to drive at first, but not just puts miles on my poor car.
  12. ask a family member? My chacha ji is taught me, and now I just have to practice. By the way, choose someone with patience (that's the reason i chose chacha ji over my dad, lol).
  13. First of all Jagdip, I would just like to point out no one is attacking Christianity. All that has been said by anyone here is a reversal of your logic. You ask how do we know if Guru Nanak Dev ji was a messenger of god; the person then turned around and asked you how do we know Jesus Christ was a messenger of god. He was not trying to say that Jesus was not a messenger of God, he was just posing your own question to you. I don't see how it's attacking if it's being done to Christianity and not attacking when being done to Sikhism. Also you said: Well then how come you say Is this not similar? He said he had never read anywhere that guru's asked their followers to do wrong things, and you say you don't believe in blind faith. However after that in response to his question about Jesus' claim as messenger of god, you said read the bible. Don't you see how that can be taken as blind faith. I just want to say this one final thing. All that I have said in this post has not been to disparage Christianity or make Sikhsim look better. I'm merely trying to make Jagdip see things in a more objective manner. You seem to have a bias towards Christianity, which is fine, but then your whole post is almost useless because I'm assuming you asked these questions to learn about Sikhism. If you have already formed an opinion you won't see the answers in an objective light. No one is attacking Christianity, all of the earlier posts were trying to answer your questions or even raise questions about your questions so as to make it a bit more objective.
  14. I was surfing through websites about sikhi, and I came across this one. I thought I'd post the address because there were somethings I didn't quite agree with, but also because it mentions a "sect" of sikhi aside from Nirankaris and Namdharis, called Radhasoami. allaboutsikhs.com/books/litp/05.htm Well the first paragraph bothered me because it says: "This family includes Khalsa Sikhs who shave their heads and non-Khalsa Sikhs who do not; vegetarian and non-vegetarian Sikhs; Sikhs who utilize the name Singh and Kaur and those who do not; and Sikhs who only recognize the ten past gurus and others who follow a living guru. Indeed, there is no clear consensus on who are Sikhs[1]." shave their heads? what is that all about, doesn't seem like a typo, but you never know. Anyhow I just thought it would be interesting to some members here, so I thought I'd post it. Let me know what you think...as there are so many people here that know much more about sikhi than I do.
  15. :x Bah..I don't like this world. How do I leave?
  16. I think this is an interesting topic, but for me it's an easy answer. Take it when you are ready to live your life as a true amritdhari. You have to make the decision, not your parents. You have to know all about it, and have to want it. With kids, most don't know what it means, and won't until they're older. I have seen little kids in Gurudwara that have taken amrit because of their parents, but they run around like other kids cursing and being disrespectful. Not saying that kids can't/shouldn't take it, but it should be an individual choice. One that I don't think most kids can make rationally. On the note of the Gurus, I think they were far more enlightened at the younger ages than say you or I.
  17. r u sure? lol Well I agree with what has been said about bettering ourselves and not worrying about a physical place for us. Sikhi teaches universal brotherhood, we should embrace all others and live side by side. The Sikh nation is wherever there are Sikhs to uphold its values. That said, the future of sikhi does not depend as much on a piece of land as it does on the sangat.
  18. lol...I guess it's a joke...wow, I can't believe I didn't realize the first time..lol.
  19. Is this post serious, or not?
  20. Um.. I have a question. About the first post: The person mentioned "sects" of sikhi, and one Kali? Kind of confused by that, I thought that those that took Guru Granth Sahib to be the guru were Sikhs, and the other groups were sects as they emerged much later. Also I ask this because in order to have a sect, you need something original for it to come out from. Not trying to degrade anyone, just questioning because that is what I always believed.
  21. Wow, what's with the bashing of other religions? Sikhi is not the best; there is no best, all are just different paths to the same thing. We should respect all religions: Hinduism, Islam, etc.. Rikki those people that killed our Guru's may have been Muslim, but that doesn't mean they killed Guru's because they were Muslim; they did so because the were evil people. You cannot call all Muslims evil, or Islam for that matter. Also I will say that many similarities exist between Sikhism and Hinduism, but they are different religions. Sikhi may have many ideas in common with Hinduism, but it is not reformed Hinduism. That is about as valid as saying that Christianity is reformed Judaism, and that all Christian are Jews. As Jesus was Jewish, in fact Jesus even lived out his life as Jew, unlike our Guru's that did not live out as Hindus.
  22. You guys should check out their site it's even funnier, I'll get the adress from my friend. They really are jokers, I know em from gurudwara.
  23. Hey "NewAgeSikh" hope you know that there is no priestly class in Sikhism like in Christianity. Any one can perform the service provided they know what they are doing. See that is the key phrase because not everyone knows how to lead the service. Those gaini's we have are there because Sikhism is what they have studied and they are much better suited at performing service. And the reason why many of them have hair is because on their path to learning about Sikhism they realized the importance of kes. See the logic there? So anyone can perform the service provided they know what they are doing. And if I may point out, every single thread you have posted complains about the turban and beard. I'm beginning to think this is less and less about you learning about Sikhism and more about getting rid of the turban and beard.
