  1. www.gursevak.com has the visraam pothi in pdf, which is a santhya pothi of all of guru granth sahib ji. gurbanifiles.com or .org has sggs in downloadable format as well.
  2. Sant Jagjit Singh ji put out a copy of Chanakya as well, it's online somewhere...
  3. seems extremely doubtful. with enemies on all sides people tend to forget internal divisions. those things creep back in later, after the dust has settled (during maharaja ranjit singh's raj for example). Such an insanely harsh "punishment" for another sikh, during a time of war and uncertainty, when both high and low have to share food out in the field (during campaigns) anyway??? a fake sakhi imo.
  4. whether one stays or leaves, if they believe in it from the heart and try to live it, they are sikhs. if they stay, and engage in caste oppression, clearly they don't follow it from the heart and are not "model sikhs" as you claim i, or others, put it. next you're going to say we're calling bull on the need for equality... your method of "vichaar" is putting words in peoples' mouths that they never said, and then defeating those made up arguements...
  5. I understood his post as not promoting casteism. either way I do get that people come into the kaum for many reasons, and that issues must be addressed, as evidenced by posts on the forum over the years. Bottom line for me though, if a person turns his back on the Guru for any reason, he was never a real sikh to begin with. I understand most people won't take that line, and that's fine with me. people are all at their own way of understanding.
  6. you understand sikhi from a completely different angle than some do. your's is very social/political, which is why you consider a simple (yet important) thing like equality to be the cornerstone of dharm. it is not. this is your vichaar and not what bani says. Naam is the cornerstone. the two of you don't see eye to eye and you keep making accusations of casteism etc b/c he comes from a different angle. he sees it more from the spiritual side. i'm honestly astounded that you keep lobbing empty accusations. surely you can see that he's looking at it from a more spiritual angle, remembering kurbanian where people gave up everything for dharm???
  7. the reason english is so prevalent in south india is b/c the british began their conquest from the south and moved upwards. they ruled the south for the longest time so English had a longer time to sink in; but ruled the north, including Punjab, for the shortest period of time. Also, schools in the pinds are horrible. Generally, the gov't schools are the worst, Sikh dharmic schools are much better, and convent schools, which many cannot afford, are considered the best for english learning.
  8. you'd need to make a judgement call. does the person seem like they are more observant? in that case, I wouldn't ask. otherwise, i might.
  9. what do you mean by non-transcendant? as in imminent?
  10. they love abortion so much that they willingly blind themselves on the devastating impact it can have on society when misused. poverty, resource scarcity, cultural and religious tension, and tons of horny males with no prospect of marriage... formula for ww3? something has to be done to expend all that spare male energy...
  11. the animation reminds me of cartoons in the 80's and early 90's, only with brighter colours. graphic novels could be made to be quite sophisticated, and have appeal across a wide age range and don't require as large a budget as a tv show or movie. with the critical acclaim of watchmen, a well written novel could really do well, and perhaps even appeal across cultures. although it does happen to be a very crowded market.
  12. asd, i'm not a girl but i can tell you what girls look for varies widely. some are dharmic and seek a dharmic minded partner. others are more worldly, while some are in between(follow dharm mainly for social reasons, or are weak in it). i believe that like attracts like, you must build yourself up so that you yourself have the qualities that you are looking for in a mate. i have kind of noticed this play out in my own life as well. there are shabads in various granths for finding a partner if you want to use them. but mainly, i would just say do more seva, you'll get laha and meet new people. just go nishkaam if you can though.
  13. where does fashion come from? how are ideas on what's fasionable and what's not disseminated? tv is the main purveyer of these ideas, tv is also the main purveyer of subtle notions of european american superiority to other cultures. I recall an indian friend went to china to learn mandarin for a summer. He said that he was often ignored and received the worst service while his white friend received the best service. people basically fawned over his white friend. another friend (vietnamese) went to japan to teach english. She told me that the japanese look down on others who aren't white or japanese.
  14. ASD, these days girls (and their families) are often a lot more demanding regarding their groom (and vice versa) especially with regard to education etc. however, i have often seen instances where the girl didn't really care that much about these kinds of things, but the family did. Either way, many families view marriage as an investment, and want to get the most out of their investment. So, what I am saying, is that the more you invest in yourself, in growing and developing yourself, the better an investment you will seem for a potential partner. It may all seem superficial, but this is how most marriage matches have been made, more or less, for thousands of years across cultures. The main thing, imo, is that the potential partner should be solidly grounded in dharm, not be superficial, and have the potential to be friends. good marriages end up in some sort of friendship anyway. the easiest investment in oneself that a person can make is to work out. a friend of mine despaired of finding a match, but his confidence shot way up after a few months of weightlifting and eating healthier. it's also important to be patient and not let the lack of a match get you down. 25 is still fairlly young. i only found a good match at age 29. despite being investment-worthy a lot of this had to do with a smaller social network on my part. it's hard to really give you a more tailored answer as I don't know enough about your situation.
  15. his beliefs are actually quite specific to the followers of niddar singh, a shastar vidya teacher in uk. niddar calls himself the main representative of nihang beliefs in the uk, and then turns around and promotes his own twisted version of sikhi which is completely at odds with nihang beliefs on many key points, such as female facial hair.
  16. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwG5vWMcPVw&feature=share you can see the rest of the parts at the end of the first. Starring: Tehelka Editor and Rahul Bose Every third male and every tenth female student has taken drugs on one pretext or the other and seven out of 10 college-going students abuse one or the other drug, High Court told. These disturbing details were submitted by Harjit Singh, Secretary, Department of Social Security and Women & Child Development, Chandigarh, in reply to a petition filed by some to drug rehabilitation centres before the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The secretary, on behalf of the Punjab Government, submitted that "the vibrancy of Punjab is virtually a myth.... many sell their blood to procure their daily doze of deadly drugs, even beg on the streets for money to continue their addiction... The entire Punjab is in the grip of drug hurricane which weakens the morale, physique and character of the youth. We are in the danger of losing the young generation. The vibrant Punjab that had ushered in the green revolution is today living in a dazed stupor as 67 per cent of its rural household has at least one drug addict." More than 70% of Punjab's youth is addicted to drugs. Glut means to flood (a market) with an excess of goods so that supply exceeds demand. A multi million dollar drug nexus operating under the noses of the Border Security Force, The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, The Narcotics Control Bureau and the Intelligence Bureau, leaving them as mere bystanders. 17. i never said it was goi. and i never said that they were distributed for free. oft times, when there is a pressing social problem, governments will use half assed solutions b/c they don't want the problem to be fixed. if the govt really did think of sikhs as full, normal proper citizens now, then why do they go to such lengths to defame us in western countries?
  18. tv is no doubt one of many factors. westernisation, combined with an increase in disposable income, and probably other factors ... I have long felt that tv panders to the lowest common denominator, over time that denominator becomes even lower, and tv continues to pander. Aristotle once opposed plays that provided comedic entertainment solely for the sake of entertainment (and not for the purpose of instruction) for this reason - it lowers peoples' buddhi. a cop interviewed in a newspaper article said that politicans would order drug dealer prisoners released and so the police would have no choice but to release them. if i remembered which newspaper the article appeared in i'd reference it. the indian govt. tried to eliminate the Sikhs as a threat once and for all. After such a long and determined resistance movement, why would the government cease its efforts just b/c the movement was defeated ? why would the government give them breathing room to reorganise when they know that many sikhs, at home and abroad, still harbour resentment? It wasn't just operation bluestar that sikhs dealt with, it was also operation woodrose (the systematic elimination of ALL male keshdharies in targetted villages of a certain age), operation shuddi karan (systematic rape of sikh women so that they wouldn't have "terrorist" babies), and other operations. Sant Jarnail Singh and his men were only at the Golden Temple complex, so why would they attack dozens of other gurdwaras at the same time ?? All these efforts were bent on crushing the Sikhs, grinding them down so completely and totally that they could never again pose any threat to India. To do that it is not enough to defeat a people militarily, you must make a people forget who they are. Pregnancies. but Punjab and Haryana both have some of the highest abortion rates in India, especially when it comes to female fetuses.
  19. tv. how many hours a day do people have "sangat" with tv vs. sangat with bani? and then they go to school and have sangat with others who have had hours of "sangat" with tv. punjab society suffered much decline after the pinds got tons of channels vs the very few they had previously. i'm sure there are other factors, such as the indian govt and other politicians making liquour and drugs very easily available in punjab, lack of investment etc. when a person lacks prospects, so much easier to move down (become patit, drink, "enjoy") then to move up (live a relatively austere dharmic life).
  20. what rank in western police forces would an ssp be equivalent to?
  21. eyewitnesses who protested darshan raggi said the same kind of thing happened, with people inside the gurdwaras attacking and provoking the singhs.
  22. For an alternative, and deeper, view of what happened in punjab from a politician's perspective see "The Gallant Defender" by AR Darshi.
  23. note that this is a different file than the gutka put up here some years ago. this file has better and more standardized formatting, far fewer errors, all banis are now same length as in damdami taksal gutkas, the ardass has been added, and a number of other shabads have been added.
  24. This is the full, basic Nitnem in Gurmukhi with an English translation. All the Banis are in line with the prescribed minimum by DDT. The Gutka Sahib includes the 7 daily banis, ardass, rakhya lei shabads, and a fair size selection of additional shabads. It's formatted for the Sony ebook reader, but this should work just fine on Kindle or any other ebook reader as well. Sampooran Nitnem Gutka.pdf
