  1. most gurdwara committees don't seem to have the skills/knowledge/money to reach out to young adults in any meaningful way beyond Sttm projectors (which are usually youth operated), even when they actually have that drive. i think the future really does lie in youth stepping up to provide that next higher level of seva. and for youth to step up and bridge that language gap.
  2. to certain posters: please be more civil. no more off topic back and forth sniping on caste please.
  3. lol, so true. It seems that every person who I've told in real life that I read SA has responded back with ''isn't that a nang forum?'' SS isn't really anti-nihang, just very anti-bhang and meat consumption, whereas the heavy promotion of those by some members earned this forum a rather black label. -Many people search google for Sikhi related questions. This site often has the best answers but due to poor indexing (or whatever you call it), few people end up here. - fixing this could result in people who had previously decided to ignore SA as bias giving this place a second chance. - Perhaps it would be helpful to have resources on this forum better indexed? it would take a lot of time to create a master index, but it would be a huge resource. If a little bit is indexed each day, it probably won't take much time out of a person's day to day life either. -The site's search engine is horrid. -perhaps cross promotion with another site? SS is really the most catch all and most general of all sites. And given the intellectual nature of this site, I don't think it's going to become as generally appealing anytime soon. Although it's appeal can certainly be widened to a great degree.
  4. hmmm... That was around the time that Sikhs fought against and caused the shaheedi of Naurangabad wale Mahapurkh... Afterwards, that unit was considered cursed and people labeled them as those who committed Gurumaar. It was, i'm guessing, the first incident of khalsa killing a mahapurkh. if that's true it would signify an incredibly gigantic divergence from Sikh tradition.
  5. so at what point did sikhs lose their national pride? I mean, it's pretty clear that a fair number still retain this pride. But when did the bulk of sikhs lose it?? Did it occur pre-partition or post-partition??
  6. he could transfer it to wordpress, where it would be hosted for free.
  7. As someone from a legal background, at the risk of being accused of (nonexistent) sexism or nonexistent bias, i'd like to add that every person has a right to face their accuser. Even when the accusation is as serious as sexual abuse. Such problems exist in every community to some extent b/c of human nature. And when discovered should be vigourously investigated and prosecuted. But at this point there seems to be little evidence that the problem is more widespread in our community than it is in other communities. Castism we have too much of, that you can legitimately call a trend, b/c there's evidence of that. but I have seen no evidence of sexual abuse spread to a greater degree than there is in other communities. That it exists to some extent, there can be no doubt (just like in all human communities), but lets not over-inflate the problem. The real problem is more likely not enough proper investigation and action in some cases, although we do see that in others. When there is enough evidence of calling it a trend then lets call it that,no point in jumping the gun
  8. the time is very very close and will be hard. jaap naam do paath.
  9. are any of these going to be available for download? I prefer to read these on my ebook reader rather than on computer or in printed form.
  10. but in Guru ji's Bani he writes the opposite. It seems more likely that the writers metaphorically attempted to capture that the son of the 9th Guru worshipped an aspect of Akaal Purakh and not any deity.
  11. http://www.mediafire.com/myfiles.phphttp://www.mediafire.com/myfiles.php seems like a very good hosting site.
  12. beware of sikh marg and related publications. i used to read those regularly. They are the work of unspiritual pseudoscholars, many of whom are actually enemies of the sikh panth.
  13. where did you come up with the idea that most akaal takht sahib jathedars are illiterate most are actually scholars you should get your facts straight before you go on these diatribes
  14. I agree, discrimination from jatts affects others disproportionately more than discrimination by other groups, because jatts hold the levers of power. however, i really don`t see that fact being denied by anyone. to seriously discuss the issue, to really get into the dynamics of the problem, i don`t think it`s productive to keep restating the same thing again and again when we all accept that discrimation by jatts has a disproportionately greater negative effect.
  15. Interesting thing is, I don't see anybody excusing caste discrimination from jatts or anybody else... they are saying that caste discrimination from anyone is wrong.
  16. agree with the two posts just above mine. it seems that if the population is to be divided for the sake of effective administration, a more fluid appproach is needed otherwise rigidification of identity (or pseudo-identity) occurs. classification using economic means is much more fluid and successful in most cases.
  17. Watch the video of the journalist who was beheaded using the halal method... After you hear his screams let me know if you still think that the halal method of slaughter is humane. It's time to wake up from the shackles of liberalism.
  18. the lengths that people will go to justify their own mann-marjee never ceases to amaze me...
  19. generally, the periods of persecution are when a dharm's followers are most pure, later on people with less strenght of faith join and the possibility of having individuals lapsing increases. it's still the same low possiblity for the true adherents, but the kacha ones are in greater numbers.
  20. any katha by sant isher singh ji or sant gurbachan singh ji or sant kartar singh ji. particularly atam gian by sant isher singh ji. http://www.gurmatveechar.com/audio
  21. didn't the Guru predict that the Khalsa would establish raj, and then lose it due to falling from Sikhi?? (from Raj Nama or Karni Nama I think) Ranjit Singh's raj certainly fits the bill, as Banda Singh Bahadur's raj was lost due to Banda Singh Bahadur ji himself making a mistake and not necessarily the majority of sikhs. that would strongly indicate that widespread liquor consumption began during Ranjit singh's raj.
  22. drinking culture in canada is probably very similar to UK. But alcohol is not as freely available, we don't seem to have as many pubs, the age limits are higher, and although alcohol is embedded in the culture (desi and white), it doesn't seem to be as much so as in UK white culture. Don't know about desis compared in both places, but I imagine availability and mainstream culture have an influence. It's still really bad here though.
  23. when the soul enters is different for each jeev. Yes, there is suffering, but I imagine it's a good thing that burns up bad karams. Some advanced souls often enter the body at a very late time in the pregnancy so they don't have to suffer. The more naam bani the mother and father focus on, the greater the soul that enters, and the greater the benefit to all. Sant Sunder Singh ji Bhindrenwale's father used to read Gurbani into his mother's ear when she was asleep so they could keep Bani going 24/7 for the fetus. Also, I kinda wonder if perhaps that those who do more paath may reduce suffering fo the jeev.
