  2. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh awesome topic...i love saakhis!! I heard this one at gurudwara one time and it's soo deep so i thought i'd share.... :sikhiwink1: Guru Gobind Singh Ji was standing by some river one time and 3 other Sikhs were with him. Standing on the bank of the river, Guru Ji was tossing a little rock from one of his hands to another...he did this for a little while. At one point, the rock fell from Guru Ji's hands and into the water..and duh, it sank. Guru Ji asked one of the 3 Sikhs why the rock sank... He said that was so because the rock is heavier than the water around it so it sank! Guru Ji asked the 2nd guy the same quesiton and he replied... The water has a lot of haumai so it can't stand anything that floats on it... Then Guru Ji asked the 3rd Sikh, Bhai Dya Singh Ji, the same question and Bhai Sahib Ji said... I can only think of one reason why the rock sank: because it left Your hands. ..waheguru! Guru Ji embraced Bhai Dya Singh Ji and asked him to pray that may he (Guru Ji) never leave Akaal Purakh's hands..... waheguru waheguru waheguru waheguru chardee kalaa!! keep the saakhis coming.. :sikhiwink2: Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
  3. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh although I don't know what my own stand is on this issue, i wanna share what i heard at gurudwara last sunday. the uncle ji was saying...we worry too much about not being able to fully respect Guru Granth Sahib Ji and if we keep thinkin like that, we wont ever be able to have Guru Sahib Ji at our home. The whole point is to receive guidance from the Guru when you're not exactly the best of a Sikh...we think we can only have Guru Sahib Ji at our home when we're the best of Gursikhs we can be...If we wait till we think the conditions are suitable enough to have the Guru at home, it may just be too late! Keep in mind allllll the different kinds of people the previous 10 Gurus met..do you think Guru Sahibs flat out rejected meeting and interacting with them? ...and what about all those people whose lives were completely changed after having met Guru Sahibs and listening/reading their sweet bani. In the end, it's just a matter of how much love you have for the Guru. :sikhiwink2: <<that's just the cutest.. chardee kalaaa Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
  4. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh 8 pages worth of 'discussion' and we're still confused :stan: i once asked a gurmukh the same question..and the answer i got was in the form of a rhetorical question... the person said to me.."Who are you doing it for?" ..something to think about the only reason we feel the need to alter our body image is to please others...and there is a hidden and indirect motive behind everything we do, although we may blame it on others..i hope that makes some sense. if we just ask ourselves who we're practicing Sikhi for, i think we may find the answer to this question (and so many others). if we didn't already know eyebrow plucking is wrong, this discussion wouldn't have started in the first place. chardee kalaa sorry if i offended anyone Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
  5. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh that was so cool bhenji :yo: I read this quote (ok so it's more like a paragraph) one time by Montaigne..on death..here it is-- There is no place on earth where death cannot find us--even if we constantly twist our heads in all directions as in a dubious and suspect land...If there were any way of sheltering from death's blows...But it is madness to think that you can succeed...Men come and they go and they trot and they dance, and never a word about death. All well and good. Yet when death does come to them, their wives, their children, their friends--catching them unaware and unprepared, then what storms of passion overhwhelm them, what cries, what fury, what despair... To begin depriving death of its greatest advantage over us, let us adopt a way clean contrary to that common one; let us deprive death of its strangeness, let us frequent it, let us get used to it, let us have nothing more often in mind than death. We do not know where death awaits us; so let us wait for it everywhere. To practice death is to practice freedom. A man who has learned to die has unlearned how to be a slave-Montaigne

  8. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh I just got back from a camp and we discussed this issue too...one answer i specifially remember is.... back in the day, when sangat came to see and hear Guru Ji, the males would usually dominate the area all around Guru Ji, therefore, making it hard for women to get the same oportunity to see and hear Guru Ji... so, the tradition started that males and females sit on different sides so that everyone had a fair chance of meeting and listening to Guru Ji. there was some other explanation i heard too but i can't remember what it was... chardee kalaa Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
  9. Gabroo bhaji-- there's nothing cooler than to see someone try to walk on the Sikhi path...I read some post here a few days ago and a line of it really got to me--it was something about how our enemies are our true love because they're the ones who make us stronger. Now i'm not saying your family is your "enemy" but sometimes it seems that way. trust me..been there, heard that, and still hear it sometimes. It seems as if you know exactly what you want (Sikhi)...that's awesome. A lot of people don't realize it and its exactly what they need in their life. Just do ardaas~ You know inside that keeping ur rehit comes way before anything people think/say, so go for it Singh! Don't delay it...You're lucky you're a guy..can you imagine a girl going through a situation like this? For guys, it's somewhat 'normal' for families to accept dastaar-wearing, but in the case of girls, parents FLIP OUT...!! :? Guru Jee is definitely looking out for you! You said something about how in the back of your mind, you're questioned about some of your actions--that's the Sikhi voice calling out to you. 8) just like steel bangle bhaji said, "charan saran gur kott paindaa jaa-ey chal satgur kott paindaa aagey hoy layt hai" take ONE step towards the Guru, and He will take a thousand steps towards you! chardee kalaa ~keep your HAIRitage alive  Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
  10. got this in my email... 8) -------- Waheguruji Ka Khalsa, Waheguruji Ki Fateh! Yesterday, I was at Penn Station waiting for my train and I decided to sit in the waiting room since their was still half an hour till my train arrived. When I got to the waiting room it was packed and I walked around looking to find an empty seat. Then I saw and old man, a sardar, who waved to me. He then got up and motioned for me to take his seat. I smiled...so touched and happy that a stranger would offer me his seat. I shook my head and told him to sit and left. After a while I realized how happy I was that someone had done something so considerate for me, I wanted to go back and thank him. When I got back he wasn't there anymore. Then I saw a little boy with a joora fishing for change in his pocket. I went over and offered to buy him the icecream he wanted. A minute later the old man came back and told me that the little boy was his grandson. He told me that he had recognized that I was a Sikh because of my Kara and that he wanted his "beti" (me) to sit down instead of him. I thanked him. One kind act caused a series of reactions in which two strangers came together to realize one meaning of Khalsa. It was my Kara that created the bond between this stranger and I. It was a kind act carried out in the name of the Kara that created a bond between us. One Kind act - sewa - can touch people so deeply!!! Sewa is not only service but it is kindness from the heart.... Gur Rakha, Karen Kaur

  13. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh This was sent to the egroup of the Gurudwara here... hope that helps ---------- WaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa | WaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh || There are four types of Bani as follows: 1. Baikhari Bani: WaheGuru WaheGuru is repeated with tongue and lips. 2. Madhama Bani: WaheGuru WaheGuru is repeated in "kanth" without movement of tongue and lips. Reward is 10 times more than #1. 3. Pasanti Bani: WaheGuru WaheGuru is repeated in "hirda" which is without movement of tongue and lips. Reward is 100 times more than #1. Gurbani says " Har jan simro hirde raam". 4. Pra Bani: WaheGuru WaheGuru is repeated in "nabhi" which is cluster of veins from foot to the head. Reward is 1000 times more than #1 i.e. saying WaheGuru one time in this stage is equivalent to saying WaheGuru 1000 times in Baikhari Bani. Gurbani says " Gurmukh rome rome har dhiave". There are about 35 million pores in the body and every pore says WaheGuru. After these four bani, there is "anhad shabad". There are different "chakars" on the way to reach WaheGuru. 1. Agiya Chakar: It is a place where eyes and nose meet. When one concentrates "birti" here, the light can be seen and sound can be heard from inside. 2. Trikuti Chakar: When one concentrates "birti" at this place, more light (like one sun's light) can be seen and sweet dim sound can be heard. 3. Dasam Duar: When one concentrates "birti" here, more light (like many suns'light) and very sweet dim sound can be heard. Gurbani says "nau darvaje kaya koat hai, dasve gupat rakhije" After dasam duar one reaches "manjale makhsood" and that is the goal. Gurbani says " roop na rekh na rang kitch traigun te prabh bhin, tisai bujhai nanaka jis hovai suparshan". LESSON LEARNT: ************ There is long path to reach WaheGuru. One must start from step 1 i.e. Baikhari Bani and keep on moving up. It takes lot of "kamai". It may take many years and sometimes more than one "janam" to reach WaheGuru. One should not stop and must keep moving on the long path to reach WaheGuru.

  16. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh sorry to hear about your masser ji. i guess the main thing to understand (according to Gurbani) is that death shouldn't be treated as something "bad." What's bad/wrong about it? It's the ultimate "end" for us all, rite? I heard this shabad at Gurudwara one time at a keertan for someone who passed away not too long ago--- Vaddhans Mahalla Pella aavoh miloh saheliho sachRaa naam laeyhaa(n ) Come, O my companions - let us meet together and dwell upon the True Name roveh birhaa tan kaa aapNaa sahib sa(n )maalehaa(n ) Let us weep over the body's separation from the Lord and Master; let us remember Him in contemplation. saahib samaaley panth nihaaley asaa bhee othai jaaNaa Let us remember the Lord and Master in contemplation, and keep a watchful eye on the Path. We shall have to go there as well. jis kaa keeaa tin hee leeaa hoaa tisai kaa bhaaNaa He who has created, also destroys; whatever happens is by His Will. jo tin kar paaeaa su aagai aaeaa asee kay hukam karegaa Whatever He has done, has come to pass; how can we command Him? aavoh miloh saheliho sachRaa naam laeyha Come, O my companions - let us meet together and dwell upon the True Name. ||1|| http://www.sikhitothemax.com/PageASP.asp?ShabadID=2195 the next shabad on this page starts off with the most awesome death-related Gurbani line ever! maraN na mandaa lokaa aakheeai jay mar jaaNai aisaa koy Death would not be called bad, O people, if one knew how to truly die. 8) sorry about the super late reply to this topic. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh that is some pretty amazing stuff. 8) here's some more keertan with katha in English--i don't think all the shabads have English katha but my suggestion would be to listen to it all...it's beautiful keertan. 20. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh all, this question came up at another Sikh forum and it was soooo inspiring to read the responses people wrote. So, i was just wondering, How did you get into Sikhi?..How did Sikhi get into you? Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
  21. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh I came across this shabad one time when i was feeling kinda down and after reading it and its translation, i felt a whoooole lot better. so i thought i'd post it on here because we all have times when we feel like everything's working against us, but really, it's nothing at all. just a matter of how we look at things..anyway, this shabad appears on page 1140 of Guru Granth Sahib Jee... ---- bhairo mahalla panjva Bhairo, 5th Guru tao kaReeai jay hovai baahar We should feel sad, if God were beyond us. tao kaReeai jay visrai narhar We should feel sad, if we forget the Lord. tao kaReeai jay doojaa bhaaey We should feel sad, if we are in love with duality. kiaa kaReeai jaa(n ) raheaa samaaey||1|| But why should we feel sad? 22. Guru Glorious They ask me to say something about Guru Gobind Singh; they ask what is He to me? I tremble when they ask me, what is He to me? Unable to say anything in reply, I burst forth into childlike cries of both joy and pain, and I faint away, knowing not what is He to me! Only I say Guru Glorious! Guru Glorious and I am consoled, I slumber in His Lap, soothed by the lullabies of my own sound, knowing not what is He to me! Do not ask me to define Him, Do not ask me to praise Him, Do not ask me name Him, Do not ask me to preach Him, And ask me not to conceal Him, One who has freed me,- Me, the self-poisoned, the down trodden slave in the fragrance of Himself. Whatever He may be to anyone else, To me, He is the Creator, who has cast Himself in the shape of His Song. And sitting nowhere, He showers from his eyes a rain of stars in the sky! Let the Great Ones name Him, Let the scholars search Him Let the learned discourse on Him, Let the martyrs sing Him, Let the lovers call Him, Let the maidens garland Him, and sing Him a welcome! Let the saints worship Him, let the devotees kiss the Hem of His Garment, and anoint their foreheads with the dust under His feet, Let the children gather round Him, Whatever He may be to anyone else, To me He is my sacred friend, who comes unseen to me in my dark despair, to wipe a silent tear with the edge of His Kingly Skirt. And to say to me when I cannot listen even to Him, choked with my own tears,- "I am here by your side, the whole of myself when noone is nigh, I am for you, O sad sinner! I am exclusively for you and no one else!!" Let the women say to Him, "I love you," Let the singer say to Him, "I sing for you," Let the dancer say to Him, "I dance for you," Let the yogi say to Him, "I lie wrapped up in thoughtof you," Let the pious tell Him, "we obey your law," Whatever He may be to anyone else and anybody else to Him, What can I be?- I, devoid of all virtue, merit, or light; I devoid of the sacred vows of piety, silence or poverty; I a sweeper of the street of the Pleasure of Sense; I, an aimless chaser of quivering Illusions that fly the trembling colors of the wings of the butterflies that flutter around the Maya of life in full flowers: What can I, I say to Him?- I, the old joy-sipper with the everlasting burden of Illusion on my back: I only cast my head down in shame, I stand abashed, away from all, in the corner of my naked body with all its scars and stains; But behold: He cometh even to me, as the sun goes down, and the saints leave Him alone. And as He cometh, I burst forth crying. And He consoleth me saying: " Have I been really too long away from thee?" ........................................ by Prof Puran Singh Jee
