The 1st element which Jack speaks of is most important - as correct recitation of Gurbani is vital and was important to Guru Sahib. The understanding of the words and the arth follow on from learning the Bani and memorising it. To try and learn the arth before one can even pronounce it or remember it is foolish - as one is trying to run before they can crawl. If people are teaching only teh pronounciation, then they are not qualified to teach, they should also have knowledge of the arth, or at least relavant material to hand i.e. Baba Gurbachan Singhs Jis guides.
