19-year-old woman allegedly responsible for Tuesday night's hit-and-run case in Chandigarh that left two people dead has surrendered.

Sukhman Brar surrendered to the police on Wednesday evening and was arrested. She is the grand-daughter of retired Lt Col G.S. Brar in whose name the ill-fated Honda Accord car is registered.

"Sukhman has been arrested and is being interrogated. A chargesheet will be filed against her," said Jagveer Singh, DSP, Chandigarh.

A 21-year-old man and a five-year-old child travelling on a motorcycle were killed in the accident that occurred in a VIP stretch of Chandigarh. The Honda car hit the motorcycle while allegedly racing with a Maruti Swift.

Singh told Headlines Today on the phone that Sukhman went absconding after her car hit the motorcyclist. "We raided several premises and built pressure on her (to surrender)," he said.

Sukhman's arrest came 17 hours after the accident, inviting protests from the family of the victims.

Singh said he was not in a position to tell if Sukhman was drunk at the time of the accident. A friend was accompanying her, he said.

The car was travelling at high speed from Sukhna Lake towards Sector-3, where residences of chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana are located.

After the accident, the occupants of the Honda car fled in the Swift, leaving their vehicle behind.

The dead were identified as Sukhwinder Singh, 21, and Harpreet, 5. Eyewitnesses said Harpreet was thrown several metres up in the air under the impact of the collision and died on the spot. Sukhwinder died in hospital.

so sad. bloody girls in chandigarh, thats where i first saw indian girls smoking.

In North India, Chandigarh girls are famous for smoking, taking drugs, having pre marital sex(loose moral character). Almost anyone who has studied in Chandigarh has a story to tell about the Chandigarh girls.

Sounds like virtues to me, Compared with killing innocents and scarpering off .

Rather than money per se being the cause I think its just that life has so little value. Thats in most places in the world, maybe more so in India.
