New Delhi: Ugin Thinley Dorjee, a revered Tibetan spiritual leader and the 17th karmapa, is likely to be questioned by Indian security agencies for operating as an agent of China in Himachal Pradesh.

The karmapa, who heads the second-largest Buddhist sect in Tibet, now 27 years old, escaped from China to India ten years ago. Indian officials now suspect that escape was staged.

The karmapa's followers often project him as a possible successor to the Dalai Lama, who does not directly endorse him.

The karmapa's accountant was arrested with 8.5 crores in cash at a monastery in Dharamshala. India believes that the Karmapa was planning to use this money to buy a five acre plot in Kangra to set up a new monastery that would be China-friendly, and would work on influencing others in the area to follow a similar bent.

Officials say this was the Karmapa's third attempt to buy land in Kangra. Earlier attempts in 2007 and 2008 were stalled after the RBI and Enforcement Directorate got involved in studying the source of funds.

"I think all this happened mainly because people don't know the law. It is not like we are doing this because we want to break the law. Many people send large amounts of money to the Lama as a token of respect. If anybody is trying to talk of any conspiracy, it is totally unwarranted," said Penpa Tsering, President, Tibetan Parliament in exile.

"I can understand if a small amount of foreign currency is coming from some country, but the amount is huge. Why do we have such huge amount of Indian currency? And why such huge amount of Chinese currency? If these people have been thrown out of China then how do they have such huge amount of Chinese currency?" questioned P K Dhumal, Chief Minister, Himachal Pradesh.

Dharamshala has been home to the Tibetan community in exile, including the Dalai Lama, since 1960.

Indian paranoia at its zenith. Those cuddly little slit eyed people are no threat. Stop molesting them.

Why do you think India will molest Tibetans.India's enemy is China not Tibet but on the other hand its a fact that many Tibetans are Chinese agents.Recently a documentry on Tiger parts trade was shown on national geographic where some wildlife activists tried to find out Who purchases tiger parts.their final destination was Tibet where they found Tibetans openly wearing Tiger skins

though Dalai Lama Told Tibetans not to wear any animal skins some were still wearing that.An anonymous Tibetan told them that those who are still wearing tiger and leapord skins are Chinese agents.Real tibetan don't wear skins

They must be really dumb agents if they make themselves stick out like that.

They were doing what chinese army have ordered them. Those who were tracking Tiger parts trade started from India but in India they had difficulty founding dealers who could show them Tiger parts but in Tibet they were shown parts of recently killed tiger , what is their price. The dealer that was showing them told that it is mainly chinese army that purchase these skins and some other parts. After that they all came back and just talked to Chinese officials who refuse to say anything on TV and just said that China is committed on Tiger protection.
