Tale of Saroop Kala

 

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

Chaupaee

ਦਛਿਨ ਦੇਸ ਬਿਚਛਨ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

ਜੋਗੀ ਗਏ ਭਏ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੀ ॥

In the south, the women were so pretty that even the yogis, the ascetics, gone there, had became householders.

ਮੰਗਲ ਸੈਨ ਰਾਵ ਜਗੁ ਕਹਈ ॥

ਸਭ ਅਰਿ ਕੁਲ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਗਹਈ ॥੧॥

Mangal Sen was the Raja of that part and all the enemies dreaded of his power.(1)

ਸਰੂਪ ਕਲਾ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਬਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

ਮਾਨਹੁ ਮਹਾ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਯਾਰੀ ॥

Saroup Kala was his wife who was as pretty as (the legendry) wife of

ਤਾ ਸੋ ਨੇਹ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਰਹੈ ॥

ਕਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਜੋਈ ਵਹ ਕਹੈ ॥੨॥

Shiva. Raja loved her intensively and performed his duties according to her wishes.(2)

ਰੁਆਮਲ ਛੰਦ ॥

Ruaamal Chhand

ਰੰਗ ਮਹਲ ਬਿਖੈ ਹੁਤੇ ਨਰ ਰਾਇ ਤਵਨੈ ਕਾਲ ॥

ਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਬਿਰਾਜਤੀ ਤਹ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਲੈ ਬਾਲ ॥

When Raja was in the Palace, Roop Prabha used to come there with her companions.

ਕਾਨ੍ਹਰੇ ਨਾਦ ਔ ਨਫੀਰੀ ਬੇਨੁ ਬੀਨ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ॥

ਭਾਂਤਿ ਭਾਂਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਕੁਲਾਹਲ ਹੋਤ ਨਾਨਾ ਰੰਗ ॥੩॥

The musical notes of Raag Kanrra were melodiously played on Nafiris, the flutes and the ecstasies were showered.(3)

ਏਕ ਨਟੂਆ ਤਹ ਰਹੈ ਤਿਹ ਬਿਸੁਨ ਦਤ੍ਵਾ ਨਾਮ ॥

There lived a bard who was known as Bishan Datt,

ਰਾਵ ਜੂ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਨਚਾਵਤ ਰਹੈ ਆਠੌ ਜਾਮ ॥

Whom the Raja had made to dance whole day long.

ਅਮਿਤ ਰੂਪ ਬਿਲੋਕਿ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਰਾਨਿਯਹਿ ਨਿਜੁ ਨੈਨ ॥

When the Rani saw him with her own eyes,

ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਿਰੀ ਬਿਸੰਭਾਰ ਭੂ ਪੈ ਬਧੀ ਸਾਯਕ ਮੈਨ ॥੪॥

She was overpower with lust and fell flat on the ground.(4)

ਤੋਮਰ ਛੰਦ ॥

Tomar Chhand

ਰਾਨਿਯਿਹ ਸਖੀ ਪਠਾਇ ॥

ਸੋ ਲਯੋ ਧਾਮ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥

The Rani sent her maid and called him to her home.

ਤਜਿ ਕੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਕਾਨਿ ॥

ਤਾ ਸੌ ਰਮੀ ਰੁਚਿ ਮਾਨਿ ॥੫॥

Ignoring the prestige of the Raja, she indulged in love-making with him.(5)

ਤਿਹ ਅਮਿਤ ਰੂਪ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥

ਸਿਵ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਗਯੋ ਸਰ ਮਾਰਿ ॥

His extreme handsomeness had shot through her a Cupid’s sharp arrow.

ਤਬ ਲੌ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਗਯੋ ਆਇ ॥

ਅਬਲਾ ਅਧਿਕ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥੬॥

In the meantime, the Raja appeared.(6)

ਤਬ ਕਿਯੋ ਇਹੈ ਉਪਾਇ ॥

ਇਕ ਦੇਗ ਲਈ ਮੰਗਾਇ ॥

She proceeded this way: she sent for it large cooking-vessel,

ਤਾ ਪੈ ਤਵਾ ਕੌ ਦੀਨ ॥

ਕੋਊ ਸਕੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਨ ਚੀਨ ॥੭॥

And covered it with a lid so that no one could see inside.(7)

ਜਾ ਮੈ ਘਨੌ ਜਲ ਪਰੈ ॥

ਤਰ ਕੌ ਨ ਬੂੰਦਿਕ ਢਰੈ ॥

(She spoke) ‘I have filled it with water and not a drop can drip out of it,

ਤਾ ਮੈ ਗੁਲਾਬਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

ਕਾਢਿਯੌ ਪਤਿਹਿ ਦਿਖਰਾਇ ॥੮॥

‘I have put roses in it,’ and then she presented her husband the rosewater.(8)

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

Dohira

ਸੀਂਚ੍ਯੋ ਵਹੈ ਗੁਲਾਬ ਲੈ ਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਪਗਿਯਾ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

She took some rose-water, and sprinkled it on her husband’s turban.

ਛਿਰਕਿ ਸਭਨ ਪਹਿ ਕਾਢਿਯੌ ਭੇਦ ਲਹਿਯੋ ਜੜ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੯॥

Under the shower of rose-water she slipped him out and no one could acquiesce the real secret.

 

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

Chaupaee

ਨਾਥ ਬਾਗ ਜੋ ਮੈ ਲਗਵਾਯੋ ॥

‘My Master, the garden, which I have fostered,

ਯਹ ਗੁਲਾਬ ਤਿਹ ਠਾਂ ਤੇ ਆਯੋ ॥

‘These roses have come out ofthat.

ਸਕਲ ਸਖਿਨ ਜੁਤ ਤੁਮ ਪੈ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥

‘We, all the compatriots, have made the selection.’

ਪ੍ਰਫੁਲਤ ਭਯੋ ਜੜ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੦॥

Listening to this, that fool was overjoyed.(l0)(1)

I thought it was a little unusual why a specific raag was mentioned so I had a quick look at the effects of Raag Kanra on a person's emotions. Was quite surprised to read the above quote.

 

The charitar also states that the Queen used rose water to take the peoples present attention's to one side to facilitate the removal of the Naat. This is also listed as a propoerty of rosewater " 4. The aroma of roses is said to be a powerful mood enhancer. It rids you of feelings of anxiety and promotes emotional wellbeing, thereby making you look relaxed. Since it is de-stressing, it helps you sleep better which means you will wake up feeling fresh."  Never knew that. Obviously the Queen did, so she when the situation threatened to get out of control, she had the immediate response at hand.
