Construction are some alternatives . That’s not feasible for a lot of these people. Sikhs straight off the boat have no qualifications or local knowledge. Older people prefer sitting behind a counter or using a trolley to stack shelves. For some families they need to be able to shut up shop at certain times or get their kids to help out to save costs. They can’t do those other professions, at least in the short term. They’re better off taking their security more seriously. Bullet proof glass counters, remote locking doors, CCTV for all the property not just in store, knowledge of local state laws in terms of stand your ground/ castle doctrine, legal weapons etc are all worth investing in. I know some apneh who have a side counter where they make customers pay first for goods when they don’t want to open the store fully. Obviously this outlay will cost money but it means they can recoup the cost by opening at other times due to increased security or just markup the prices if there is no competition around. Sikh communities in the States also need to form better relationships with local politicians regardless of whether they are Democrat or Republican. That way they can be asked to prioritise dealing with these perps either through law enforcement or prosecution by the district attorney. No Yankee local politician can afford to drive away business or tax paying communities in this financial climate.
