On 23 October 2004, in the 'Amrit Vela' (early in the morning), he passed away. He was father of our forum member Amrit Pal Singh 'Amrit'. He was born in 1939 in a village named 'Muhari', Distt Abbotabad, now in Pakistan. At the time of partition of India and Pakistan, he moved to 'Sirhand', and then to a village, near 'Chhachharauli'. He had a deep impact of partition on his mind. During the 'Punjabi Sooba Morcha' by 'Shiromani Akali Dal', Bhai Sahib Bhai Avtar Singh Jee was arrested. He spent two years in jail for the demands of Punjab and Sikhs. In 1961, he started his journey on bicycle, which he started from Ambala and reached Calcutta. Then he went to Tatanagar, and then Hyderabad towards South. On his cycle, he reached Sri Hazoour Sahib. He started preaching Sikhism in Tatanagar and then Raurkela (in Orrisa state). He lived in Raurkela for 9 years. During this time, he joined Hindustan Steel Limited for his livelihood. In Raurkela, he met a famous Sikh personality, Nihang Tehal Singh Ji to whom he accepted his religious teacher. Then he shifted to Chandigarh and settled here. In Chandigarh, he did complete 'katha' of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in Gurudwara of Sector 34. Then he shifted to S.A.S Nagar (Mohali). Here also, he did complete 'katha' of Shri Guru Granth Sahib in Gurudwara of Phase 1. Once again in this Gurudwara, he completed 'katha' of Guru Granth Sahib in 1986. In the evening Diwans, he completed katha of 'Gur Partap Suraj Granth', 'Panth Parkash', and 'Gur Bilas Patsahi 6'. On 30 June 2002, he did complete 'katha' of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in this region for the 4th time in Gurudwara Sacha Dhan Sahib. For completing the 'katha', he took nearly 10 years. During this period, he also did the complete 'katha of 'Gur Partap Suraj Granth', 'Panth Parkash', and 'Gur Bilas Patsahi 6'. The 'Antim Ardaas' (last prayer) for Bhai Sahib Bhai Avtar Singh Ji will be held on Saturday 30th of October 2004 at Gurdwara Sri Sacha Dhan Sahib, Phase 3B1, S. A. S. Nagar (Mohali), Distt. Guru Roop Sadh Sangat Jeeo, I have had the opportunity to speak with Veer Amritpal Singh “Amrit” briefly today. Clearly this is a difficult time for him, however I must say he remains in Chardi Kala despite being the sole remaining member of his family lineage and legacy (for those who don’t know, Veer Jee’s Mother passed away many years ago). Veer Jee relayed how his father, Sardar Bhai Sahib Bhai Avtar Singh was doing well the day prior to his sudden departure, undertaking his customary duty as the Kathavachik at the local Gurdwara. The Sangat present during the diwan told of his buoyant nature that evening as Bhai Sahib Jee joked about the Gurdwara microphone having a ‘sore throat’ as his voice broke during the katha (Bhai Shaib had been experiencing some difficulties with his throat). Veer Jee, returned home that evening (October 22, 2004) at 11pm and spoke with his father very briefly who had retired for the night. He recalls hearing him awake around 12.30am and then going back to bed. Bhai Sahib Jee would usually be awake at 4am for his Amrit Vela, however on October 23, 2004 the Alarm did not go off until 5am and then wouldn’t stop ringing. Veer Jee, at first thinking that Bhai Sahib Jee had stepped out of his room, went to switch the alarm off and there found Bhai Sahib Jee lying in bed fully dressed with his hands folded as if in prayer. It was around 5.25am and Bhai Sahib had left for his heavenly abode. The necessary arrangements were set in motion thereafter by Veer Jee, Sangat from all over Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, (the three main areas where Bhai Sahib Jee would do Katha and Veechar during his closing years) filled the streets surrounding Bhai Sahib Jee’s home, as the local cable network broadcasted the news. His departure was described as a loss of a Family, Teacher, and Heritage by Amritpal Singh ‘Amrit’. Bhai Sahib Avtar Singh represented an unbroken chain of Hazooree Parampara via his Ustad Nihang Tehal Singh, being a Kathavachik of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the Dasam Granth Sahib together with many other Itihasik Granths such as Suraj Parkaash and Pracheen Panth Prakaash. Amritpal Singh recalls many conversations with his late father where the two of them would delve into the realms of Gurbani from both the Granth Sahibs and from the legacy present within Bhai Sahib Bhai Avtar Sahib from the Hazoori Maryada passed onto him by Nihang Tehal Singh, a legacy that now rests with our own Amritpal Singh “Amrit”. It was unbeleivable for many people that Amrit bha ji himself performed the 'Antim Ardas' of his father and also took the holy 'Hukamnama'. I was there. When Amrit bha ji started the 'Antim Ardas', whole the 'sangat' was in bairaag. I saw that some of the sangat was sheding tears, when they saw Amrit bha ji performing the Antim Ardas of his father.
