Change in Maryada draws criticism

Amritsar, March 5

The amendment in the Sikh 60-year-old Rehat Maryada by the SGPC has evoked a strong reaction from Sikh intellectuals.

Mr Gurcharnjit Singh Lamba, a Sikh intellectual and Editor of monthly ‘Sant Sipahi’, has said the Sikh Maryada was formulated after marathon discussions and hence any amendment without taking the Sikh Panth into confidence was unacceptable to the sangat. He was here today to pay his obeisance at Harmandar Sahib.

A comparative study of two versions of the ‘Sikh Rehat Maryada’ - one of 1945 and the recent one published by the SGPC - shows glaring discrepancies.

Questioning the wisdom of changing the Article on re-marriage, Mr Lamba alleged the amendment was aimed to benefit certain influential persons who had indulged in bigamy. The original Rehat Maryada clearly mentions that no Sikh could remarry when his wife was alive. However, the amended Maryada has added the word ‘generally’ that reads, “Generally, no Sikh should marry a second wife if the first wife is alive.â€

Another glaring amendment in the new version is on the definition of a Sikh. The Punjabi version of the original Maryada gives the definition of a Sikh as “Any human being who believes in all Sikh Gurus in One Immortal Being, (ii.) Ten Gurus, from Guru Nanak Sahib to Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, (iii.) Guru Granth Sahib, and the utterances and teachings of the 10 Gurus and baptism bequeathed by the tenth Guru, and who does not owe allegiance to any other religion, is a Sikh.

However, the amended Punjabi version has deleted ‘Dassan’ (meaning all 10 from Guru Nanak to Guru Gobind Singh).

Mr Lamba further alleges that the deletion of ‘plucking of gray hair’ from the new version of Maryada was a blunder on the part of the SGPC.

He also criticised a section of the Sant Samaj for pursuing its own Maryada which was in sharp contrast to the original version, passed with the consent of the Sikh sangat.

Gurfateh

1)In Sgpc Maryada ardas is with Var Bhaguti Ji Ki but missionaries doubt it.

2) They doubt all verses by Tenth Master while they are mentioned as Gurbani in sgpce Maryada

3) they say that it was Brhimn who banned Halal eat else it is also OK for us.

4)Even Amrit Sanskar is beheld as Brahminacal ritual.

and list of thier such own Maryada is limitless.

But Sants if say do not eat meat will mean that we will be always saved from Halal.and list of thier corrections are endless.

its the same old story , its people who change relgion to suit their own needs , which gives ammunition for non-believers( i.e RSS) to misinterpret the real meaning.

Its frustrating to read such articles , there is no unity amongst the sikhs , as the saying going ' too many chiefs and not enough indians '

khalsa rehat, originial form of khalsa rehat is far more open minded to such small minor details which the "sgpc" is discussing. Why should sikhs obey what these corrupt SGPC 'leaders' are proposing anyway. SGPC and DGPC are all simply wealthy and extremely corrupt. SGPC clearly is a British made angrez organization that is polluting the panth.

-Who gives them teh right to "ban" someone from the panth?

-SGPC is clearly an angrez and modern group by the last word in their name=committee. Where in punjabi did COMMITTEE COME FROM?!?!

-Who are they to judge what is to be considered bani or not?

-Who are they to shorten down a particular bani?

-Who are they to take away century old traditions such ( just to name a few-shastar in front of AGGS, Raag Vidiya traditions which have completley been depleted in darbar sahib other than Balbir Singh, Baldeep Singh, Avtar Singh Gurcharan Singh, Dr. Gurnam Singh etc...etc.. The ancient naquishi paintings which have been painted over in darbar sahib.

Traditions are being forgotten, and modernism, and western ideals are being brought into the panth. How can we reject traditions which have clearly been present for centuries, and definitley pre-british raj.

Takht Hazur Sahib, thanks to the Budha Dal remains to keep the traditions of the past. Maybe, just maybe thats why Budha Dal is the original care taker of Harimandir Sahib.
