Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh Sangat Ji.

Since last week Dass met a very good friend of mine. And since having a conversation I have developed a desire to try to take Amrit. As I have seen so many people take it and live normal life it seems easy to take. I also hear a voice due to my psychosis symptoms that if i do it take and fail i can take it again as i feel like giving it a shot to see what happens.

By Waheguru Guru Sahib Ji's kirpa I know the basic banis and other paaths as their on the website thread posts.

What does the sangat on the website think about it as it will be interesting to know as its only been very recent that i am thinking about taking Amrit as i am 36 years old.

Plus what do i need to prepare myself for it as i haven't got the information much about being taking Amrit.

Also it would be a good idea especially the narak Hell i have been going through the last 2 years now with my family home situation and 8 years of depression ptsd psychosis problem.

How long will this forum remain online for in a readable & accessible state? It appears susceptible to shut-down. It would be a shame if all the forum's content from over the decades is lost in such an event due to servers hosting this forum shutting-down. This forum, whilst not currently active, remains an important repository of the Sikh religion online. It also is a fundamental aspect of Sikh cyber culture that existed from the early Internet period from the 2000's to 2010's before the domination by big social-media sites that consolidated the community. Thus, have the web-masters of this forum considered archiving this forum's contents before it is lost forever? I can assist you in this by saving the content to the Internet Archive on your behalf. Please let me know your thoughts about such an endeavour and I hope you may consider the possibility of archiving the forum for posterity. Future generations of Sikhs and Sikh researchers will be grateful.
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki fateh ji to all Sangat on here.

Dass is currently in a massive state of shock as due to the events since last 3-4 weeks and going to the last 18 months everything feels finished & wrecked beyond repair especially the big shock since 2nd week of November gone.

Dass can't sleep I am waking up in the middle of the night my usage of Zopiclone and Valium is not helping me go back to sleep. I have next psychiatrist appointment on next week but I have rang crisis line they didn't help just listened that's all.

I will get to the point that what it is that is disturbing me. My sister has left home since last 18 months due to that my parents and I have been feeling really low. My mum has cried a lot especially the way she left on that day. We were told by her that she is going to stay with a friend and will be back.

Then over a week she told my mum that she has moved in with her boyfriend and that he is a Muslim. This is where everything turned to shit in my life and my parents hearing that he belongs to that religion. My mum cried a lot. My dad has become more angry. All of this since then.

Since this news my mum has been doing ardas even got punj Singh to ardas after langar at home.

Now this is where the nail hits in the coffin. My mum got a phone call after work at home. My sister said she has got married to the beast that she was living with. My mum broke down big time as I heard loud scream and shouting as I was in my room. This has deeply affected everyone as there is only us 3 who knows about this.

I feel so broken as I can't sleep as I am in a state of shock as it is made my psychosis episodes worse. I can't mention this to anyone as mum wants keep it a secret but its eating me up inside. It's a really big shock cos she my sister doesn't think it is wrong but we are wrecked by this as it's a legal issue now.

I can't concentrate in my paaths banis as one day i do them and the next day I can't as i wake up late.

What is Sangat Ji's view as this is feeling like being hit rock bottom.

Vaheguru ji ka Khalsa Vaheguru ji ki Fateh ji!

Apologies for the lack of posts from myself sangat ji, was busy with work and studies, but over the past 1 year das has managed to learn quite abit more of technology skills with Guru Sahib's Kirpa which could help in the website that I was working on.

Here are the things that would be in the website, das would encourage the sangat to give as many suggestions as possible even if it may sound difficult to implement .

	1. E-Books

	2. Rehat Maryada

	3. Encyclopedia? (Something like a explanation on key terms in Sikhi, example: what is kalyug.)

	4. Sikh history (Of all Gurus, this would take quite a lot of time as all sakhis put into the website would have to be verified and authentic, as das would not want to just copy paste from another website.

	5. A Learning Gurmukhi section (teaching of vowels and Gurmukhi alphabets. Previously user GurjantGnostics gave a suggestion of Gurmukhi lessons, I plan on implementing that but it would be something that would be updated frequently, example - after 2 months of website being published, 10 more Gurmukhi lessons can be added etc.)

	6. Teaching of Gurmukhi Numbers ( Right now, it has been done up, where sangat can key in any number from 1 - 100, and the Gurmukhi Number, Gurmukhi Pronunciation and Romanized Pronunciation would be shown, the plan is to expand this to be 1 - 10000 instead of the original 1-100. This would take me a few days to expand but it is possible.)

	7. Gurmukhi Calendar option

	8. Simple Calendar in English, and another one in Gurmukhi. 2 more Gurmukhi Months (Maagh Mahena etc) Calendars in English and Gurmukhi. List of Gurpurabs and other important occasions will also be added.

	9. The idea previously by the sangat was to make something like an automated Shabad of the day into the website. This was quite hard to implement, but with Guru Sahib's Kirpa, das has figured out how to do it, though it will take a few weeks to complete it.

This is the current plan for the website. Das would be grateful if the Sangat here could provide suggestions .

With Maharaj ji's and Shaheed Singha di Kirpa,i tried to explain reason and purpose of this Baani. i would like to share with rest of Sangat vichaar i sent to sister. If there is any Bhul-Chuk, sangat is bakshanhaar, forgive me and plz dont hesitate to correct me and pray that Maharaj ji bless me with Sumat to do service of Panth and stand up for Baani of Dasmesh pita Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj].

Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj Sache patshah was a Master, General, Poet, writer par excellence, but most importantly he was a Revolutionary! His entire composition is revolutionary in nature. His basic aim was to shake and wake up conscience of a Sleeping nation, which was being killed, looted, raped and destroyed from centuries. And the protectors, who were given duty of protecting the society and Nation, Kshatriyas (Khatris), had left this virtue of Bir-Ras and War and taken to business and other professions. Gautam Buddha was a Kshatriya himself, he started Buddhism and exhorted people to follow the path of Non-Violence. People gave up weapons, love of weapons, respect of warriors. For this very reason Brahmins like Shankaracharya went in jungles of Rajasthan, collected various tribes living in jungles at Mount Abu and gave them title of Rajputs, who were to fight for Dharam and nation after that. When Guru Nanak dev ji saw this situation, Kshatriyas, The warriors, defenders of Dharam had become slaves and money- minded, he had to say in his Baani:-

The K'shatriyas have abandoned their religion, and have adopted a foreign language.

The whole world has been reduced to the same social status; the state of righteousness and Dharma has been lost. ||3||

Which Social Status Maharaj was talking abt? It was status of ‘’Vaishya’’, The baniya, the shopkeeper whose only aim in life was to make money. Kshatriyas had taken up profession of Vaishyas. As time changed, even Rajputs started giving their daughters to mughals in marriages. There was no pride or honour left in general Indian society that time.

Guru Nanak’s mission was not only spiritual awakening of Society, not just to make Saints or Bhagats, but he also dreamt of a society free from Injustice, Tyranny and atrocities, where all could profess their faith freely and breathe in free air. He wanted to create a society of God-conscious Sant-Sipahis who’ll be Spiritual Warriors, who with Name of Waheguru on their tongues and in their hearts and Swords in their hands will vanquish tyrants and create a Halemi Raaj-‘’Kingdom of Peace’’. But this mission took 230 years, from 1469 to 1699, when Guru Gobind Singh ji created Khalsa Panth-Army of Timeless Lord (Akaal). Guru Gobind Singh ji’s baani played a very important role in this mass awakening of a sleeping nation which was committed to Dharamyudh for its rights. It was at such time when Dasmesh Pita had declared:-

That was a time when talking about War by religious masters was considered a anathema, Gurus were supposed to be orange or white robed Sadhus who were to give sermons on how to reach God, or how to do Karam-Kands. Non-violence was considered a very great Virtue (Thanks to Buddha) and anyone speaking about War or weapons was seen as against the virtues of Love, peace and God. But Guru Gobind Singh ji didn’t care about this, he knew that without a strong committed force, backed by a strong united society, freedom was impossible. A Nation can only have freedom when it’s each and every constituent understands the value of Freedom and is ready to shed blood for this Aim (which we Sikhs of today lack in us). Gurus had tested each and every component of Indian society, The Brahmins, The Khatris, The Rajputs, The Vaishyas, the Shudras……but no one met the standard Sikh Gurus wanted them to be of, and all failed. For this very reason Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj was chosen by Lord Akaal WaheGuru to create a Panth, An Army of Akal Purakh which was to fight for Dharam! But that army was to be created out of Humans living on this planet, Gods were not going to come from heavens to be a part of it. It was a tough task, for this very reason Guru Gobind Singh ji had asked Waheguru ji in Sachkhand to help him and bless the Panth and always be its protector which He was going to create on this earth.

Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj had called upon Brahmins and Hindu Kings to take part in the revolution which was to take place in North India, but they simply refused to be a part of Guruji’s mission, for the sole reason that Guruji had abolished Caste system in Sikhi and all Gursikhs used to sit in one pangat and have langar, carried out their Shastarvidya together and did Simran together. They couldn’t tolerate Guruji giving equal status to all and refuses bluntly to support Maharaj. They put up two conditions before Dasmesh pita, that he’ll not ask them to sit with Shudras and he’ll let them worship their Gods. Guruji refused to accept these conditions which were against Sikh principles. That time Guruji had said

Earlier Nine Gurus had composed Baani which was in praise of Waheguru ,His Naam, His ‘Nadar and Karam’’Love and Peace, but Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj was given a mission to create a Fighting Force, an Army of Sant-Sipahis which was to face tyrants and butchers for centuries and crush them, and to infuse the warrior spirit in them, he undertook a heavy and momentous task of composing Bir-Ras Literature, unheard and Unmatched in history of world literature, after reading which even Cowards would take swords in their hands and fight like Lions in Battlefield. Every cut on their body, every drop of blood falling from their body was to arouse their fury in Battlefield, the fury seeing which enemies would just flee from Battle. For this, there was a need to arouse love for War, Dharamyudh in them, and for Dharamyudh to be fought and won, most important components are Weapons. Without weapons Wars cannot be fought, empires cannot be created, Nations cannot be freed. Weapons are needed to defend our self and others who cannot protect themselves. Sri Mukhvaak goes like this:-

Thus Guruji composed Shastarnaam maala Puran, The first formal Granth in history of mankind dedicated entirely to Glory of Weapons.

PART 2:

Shastarnaam Maala Puran is now a part of Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji. Puran means Ancient text. Ancient Indians had a way of glorifying their respective Devi-Devtas. 1400 years ago there was nothing such as Hinduism; there were various Sects like Vaishnavs, Shaivas and Shakats. All wrote books glorifying their Respective Gods, giving their various names, their deeds, their acts and their family history. Vaishnavs wrote for Vishnu, Vishnu puran, Bhagwat Puran, Varah Puran, Garurh Puran. Shiavs wrote Skand, Shiv and Ling puran for Shiv and Shakats had their own Devi puran and Markanday Puran. There are a total of 18 hindu purans.

Guru Gobind singh ji maharaj saw the futility of worship of these fake gods and goddesses, the negative effect their worship was having on Society as a whole. There was no unity in society that time. And to unite the masses, to infuse a spirit of Dharamyudh in them, to make people love the weapons he wrote Shastarnaam maala Puran! Guruji saw Waheguru’s light, Akaal’s Power in every atom of Universe. Waheguru was everywhere and still Is, and best way to reach him, to be one with him is to see him in the thing u LOVE the MOST. Guruji glorified Three forms of Waheguru Akaal Purakh in his Baani the most, First as Gyaan saroop( Divine Knowledge, Baani) , second as a Shastardhari(Armed With Weapons) and Third as Shastars itself. When we believe Waheguruji to be in Gyaan Saroop, We love Gurbaani, we love it, respect it, try to be One with Waheguru ji! Second Saroop of Waheguru ji, Shastardhari saroop has been glorified in baani of Guru granth Sahib ji also, although it deals with merciful saroop of Waheguru ji. Guru Arjan dev ji says in Baani:-

He is adorned with garlands of flowers, with lotus eyes.

His ear-rings, crown and flute are so beautiful.

He carries the conch, the chakra and the war club; He is the Great Charioteer, who stays with His Saints. ||10|

The Lord of yellow robes, the Master of the three worlds.

The Lord of the Universe, the Lord of the world; with my mouth, I chant His Name.

The Archer who draws the bow, the Beloved Lord God; I cannot count all His limbs. ||11||

Guru Arjan dev ji Maharaj praises Waheguruji’s Sargun Saroop as wearing Yellow Baana, and holding Conch (used in wars in ancient times to start the war),Chakkar, Gada and Bow and arrows, its in Shingaar-Ras. Guru Gobind Singh ji in his Baani uses more of Bir-Ras in his definition of Akaal Purakh’s warrior form, thus he becomes Maha-Kaal or Sarab-Kaal Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji. Guru ji uses many Bir-Rasi Shastardhari names of Waheguru ji, such as,Sri Asdhuj, Sri Asket, Kharag ket, Chakkardhar so that it infuses a warrior spirit in us. This form of Waheguru ji is present there in whole of Sri Dasam Guru Granth Sahib ji beginning with Jaap Sahib,

This Baani inspires us to be Shastardhari as our God. Waheguru Akaal is Shastardhari himself, loving him, his Bir-Ras saroop, one day we’ll become like him, Blissful Shastardhari Khalsa.

Guruji saw Shastars as manifestation of Divine Power ,Supreme power,Aadi Shakti! When we see Waheguru ji as Shastar Saroop, when we’ll see his light and his power in them, we’ll love them, we’ll respect them, we’ll always keep them with us, we’ll value them and we’ll use them as Gift of Waheguru for a Holy Purpose. Khalsa never did and will never use his Shastars against weak, helpless, women or children. So that his Sikh loves his Shastars, Guruji invoked blessings of Divine power, Aadi-Shakti, Param-Aatma in Shastar Roop. As in beginning of bhachittar Natak,

I pray you, O Supreme Lord (Sword as symbol), grant your divine assistance that this holy Book may be brought to completion. (1)

In Bhagauti Chhand Guruji says

Guruji says in Uggardanti Chhand

SO what we see is that Guru Gobind Singh ji maharaj was setting a very high ideal before Khalsa Panth, getting his Sikhs attracted towards Shastars, Baana and Dharamyudh. Guruji always used to be tyar bar tyar, always having loads of Shastars on his body, looking at which, Sikhs also starting dressing up like Guruji. Guruji even ordered Sikhs in his Hukamnaamas and Baani to be tyar bar tyarand come to him.

Sikhs saw Guruji as their idol, their Master, their General and wanted to be like him, and it’s a very lovely concept of Sikhi, in which Guru transforms Sikh in his Saroop, his Form! And Guruji himself used to dress up as Akaal Purakh ordered him in Sachkhand. So we see, this Akali Baana, Shastardhaari Saroop of Khalsa has been blessed by Akaal Purakh himself. Guruji followed his Hukam and Khalsa followed its Guru’s Hukam. To immortalise this love of Shastars , Shastarvidya, Baana and Dharamyudh in His Khalsa Panth, Guruji composed Baani of Shastarnaam maala Puran.

PART 3:

Shastarnaam Maala has various names and qualities of 5 important weapons.

1. Sword ( Kirpaan)

2. Arrow (Teer)

3. Chakkar

4. Paash( a leather or iron rope used to suffocate enemy in battlefield)

5. Pistol (Tupak)

Like ancient Purans had various Names, kathas, Qualities of their respective Gods and goddesses, Guruji praised Shastars in his Baani, as he considered them as Form of Akaal, Mahakaal, Maha Loh, Sarabloh. Shastars were his ‘’Peer’’ (Master). So he used the best composing technique prevalent that time to show his love, his affection for shastars. Thus came into existence Puraan of Shastars, Shastar naam maala Puran! It starts with salutation to Supreme Power, Aadi-shakti Bhagauti.

This Baani has a total of 1318 Chhands presently. Original saroop had 1455 Chhands but rest couldn’t be recovered from any source. The description of Chhands follows as:-

1-27 is the Salutation to all the Shastars as form of Akaal Waheguru.

28-56 – Names of Kirpaan

57-74- Names of Chakkar

75-252- Names of Arrow

253-460- Names of Paash (leather Rope)

461-1318- Names of Pistol

It’s a true fact that Guruji loved Weapons very much, He called his Kirpaan ‘’Siri Sahib’’! Siri Sahib is used for Waheguru in Guru Granth Sahib ji, and Guruji didn’t differentiate between Waheguru and Shastars, so Guruji called it ‘’Siri Sahib’’! He wanted his Sikhs to be Shastardhari, fully tyar bar tyar, and Kirpan was the minimum he wanted his Sikhs to be having all time. Kirpaan is the first Shastar praised in his Baani. It’s the name Guruji gave to this Shastar. It comes from Kirpa+ Aan ( Blessing+pride). Its Guru’s blessing to us, to protect our and our Panth’s pride and honour! Guruji always used to have many Shastars on him, he even had a kirpan in his Kesh, which sangat can see at Sri Hazoor sahib at diwan after Rehraas Sahib ji.

RACISM - EXCELLENT READING

This took place on a BA flight between Johannesburg and London.

A white woman, about 50 years old, was seated next to a black man.

Obviously disturbed by this, she called the air Hostess.

"Madam, what is the matter," The hostess asked.

"You obviously do not see it then?" she responded. "You placed me next to a black man. I do not agree to sit next to someone from such a repugnant group. Give me an alternative seat."

"Be calm please," the hostess replied. "Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will go to see if another place is available."

The Hostess went away and then came back a few minutes later.

"Madam, just as I thought, there are no other available seats in the economy class. I spoke to the captain and he informed me that there is also no seat in the business class. All the same, we still have one place in the first class."

Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued: "It is not usual for Our company to permit someone from the economy class to sit in the first class. However, given the circumstances, the captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone so disgusting."

She turned to the black man, and said, "Therefore, Sir, if you would like to, please collect your hand luggage, a seat awaits you in first class."

At that moment, the other passengers who were shocked by what they had just witnessed stood up and applauded.

In 2019, a series of events occurred that led to a paradigm shift in the future conservation of Sikh heritage. At Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib in Tarn Taran, founded by Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, there is a historic Darshani Deori gateway that was constructed during Sikh-rule by Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s grandson, Kunwar Nau Nihal Singh, who felt a deep connection to the sacred gurdwara. However, as with all buildings, overtime lack of surveillance and maintenance led to cracks developing in the structure. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee passed a resolution allowing the Kar Seva baba Jagtar Singh to “restore”, “renovate”, or “reconstruct” the Darshanj Deori. On 14 September 2018, a Jagtar Singh’s group attempted to topple the structure but local Sikh activists stopped them, saving it. By October of the same year, the resolution was withdrawn and the decision was put on-hold. However, that didn’t stop the zealous baba in his mission to destroy the historical building. The following year on the night of Saturday, 30 March 2019 at 9:00 P.M., a 300-man strong “army” of Kar Seva workers under Jagtar Singh armed with sharp-edged weapons, baseball bats, hammers, and sticks started toppling the structure, allegedly without the SGPC’s permission. For two hours, they continued their destructive rampage on the edifice ignoring desperate calls to stop their demolition from local Sikhs. The SGPC ignored calls trying to draw their attention to the issue. Finally at around 11:00 P.M., a police team led by deputy-superintendent Kawaljit Singh arrived and intervened, putting a stop to the Kar Seva destruction. Sadly, four domed-structured and other features located at the top of the building had been destroyed but the rest of the building was saved, for now. Local Sikhs demanded that a criminal case be put against the Kar Seva baba Jagtar Singh and warned that they would protest if this was not done. The manager of the gurdwara complex, Partap Singh, claimed to have called Jagtar Singh and told him to cease the vandalism but he did not lodge a police complaint.

Sikhs were rightfully outraged at the wanton razing of their historical heritage by corrupt and ignoramus parties. The SGPC, seeing the anger of the Sikh Quom, decided instead to renovate and conserve the historical deori rather than demolishing it and rebuilding a new one. Before initiating the renovation work, a meeting was held in this regard and experts of Directorate of Cultural Affairs Archaeology and Archives Museum Punjab, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, local intellectuals and members of Sikh organisations assembled for discussion. The SGPC formed a three-member panel to investigate the issue. Partap Singh, manager of the gurdwara, was suspended for failing to prevent the dismantlement of the deori. All further gurdwara repair-related responsible were withdrawn from the Jagtar Singh-led Kar Seva group. An alliance of 30 Sikh organizations demanded an independent probe into the role of the SGPC and criminal action against the Kar Seva group. Surely, someone must be profiting from this affair, whether that means pocketing funds gathered under the guise of well-meaning Kar Seva from the Sikh community or other nefarious activities. The darshani deori would eventually be restored over the years following the incident by an archeological agency under the guidance of experts, without tampering with the original structure.

This remains a critical moment in Sikh history: for the first time ever, the Sikh community stood-up and said NO, enough is enough. Too much has been lost, we will not allow more to be taken from us. The Kar Seva babas have destroyed 90-95% of Sikh heritage in Punjab within the past decades, the SGPC allows them to do so. Only we as Sikhs have the power to stop them. We have to raise our voice and allow ourselves to be heard! Staying silent and docile means more of our history will be stolen from us by these dushman, who prefer to pocket funds while converting Sikh history into mythology by wiping out all evidences of our past from this Earth.

The city, as we know it, was shaped by 5 contractors, including Khushwant Singh’s father Sir Sobha Singh, who were fondly called ‘Panj Pyare’

Delhi: Pundit Sadhu Ram, a priest of Hanuman Mandir with a huge idol of Lord Hanuman just outside the busy Tilak Bridge, vividly remembers when it was known as Hardinge Bridge and the area was called Harding Lane. These names were changed in the 1970s. Of course, Delhi remains indebted to the Viceroy of India, Lord Hardinge, as thanks to his recommendation, India’s capital shifted from Kolkata to Delhi. In a letter dated August 25, 1911, from Shimla to the British government, Lord Hardinge wrote, “It would be a better option for Britain to rule by making Delhi the capital, as compared to Calcutta (now Kolkata).” Lord Hardinge served as the Viceroy and Governor General of India from 1910 to 1916.

On December 12, 1911, at the third Delhi Durbar held in Coronation Park near Burari, the announcement to shift the capital from Kolkata to Delhi was made. It also marked the coronation of King George V. Ironically, many who pass Coronation Park today are unaware of its historical significance. A statue of King George V can still be found in Coronation Park. This same statue stood at India Gate until 1968, when it was replaced by a statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. During Lord Hardinge’s tenure, Edwin Lutyens was appointed as the chief designer of the new capital.

Once Lutyens and his team began work in Delhi in 1913, contractors from across the country flocked to the city, eager to secure contracts for the numerous buildings under construction.

 Remarkable Sikh contractors

The construction of the new capital raised the question of sourcing contractors. The government contacted prominent contractors nationwide, resulting in a large influx of contractors to Delhi, all vying for the lucrative and prestigious projects. Among those contractors, five Sikh contractors made exceptional contributions to the making of New Delhi. Renowned author Khushwant Singh, whose father was one of the five, used to say it would not be an exaggeration to say that most of New Delhi was built by a coterie of Sardar contractors of whom five did the lion’s share of building. In Sikh circles, they were known as Panj Pyare—the five beloved—after the first five followers of the last Sikh Guru Gobind Singh.”

“Sardar Sobha Singh, who came from Sargodha (now in Pakistan), with his father, Sardar Sujan Singh. Sobha Singh constructed several blocks of Connaught Place, parts of the President’s House, Scindia House, the Regal Building, the War Memorial, Union Academy School, and more,” writes Madan Thapliyal, former Director (Information) of New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), in his book Ek Sadi Ka Safar. Sobha Singh also built a bungalow at 1 Janpath, named “Baikunth,” designed by Walter George, who also designed the now-closed Regal Cinema Hall. A nameplate on the Janpath Lane gate still reads “Sir Sobha Singh”, indicating the father of author Khushwant Singh.

Basakha Singh built bungalows on South End Lane and Prithviraj Road, while Narain Singh built his on Curzon Road (now Kasturba Gandhi Marg) and constructed the Imperial Hotel, one of the capital’s first five-star hotels.

 Other contractors

Seth Haroon Al Rashid from Karachi was the main contractor for the President’s House. Lachman Das, known for his integrity, constructed the Parliament House. Akbar Ali and Nawab Ali, two Punjabi Muslims, also played significant roles; Akbar Ali built the National Archives, and Nawab Ali developed the Amrit Udyan (earlier Mughal Gardens) of the President’s House. The President’s House, being a massive project, was handled by multiple contractors, each given specific sections.

Khushwant Singh writes in his essay The Romance of New Delhi: “Lachman Das was a deeply humane man. He lived amongst the labourers constructing the Parliament House. Lord Irwin inaugurated the Parliament House on January 18, 1932. Lachman Das was present; his mission was complete, and he was satisfied with his work. However, he didn’t take on any more projects in Delhi and didn’t return to his home in Sindh. Instead, he became a Sadhu in Haridwar, where he eventually passed away.”

 Faceless labourers

Sadly, when discussing the making of New Delhi, the role of faceless workers is more often than not unrecognised. Most of the labourers were brought from Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bhilwara, and other parts of Rajasthan to Delhi. They came with their families. Initially, they were housed in Paharganj. They had walked all the way from their villages to Delhi. These simple labourers earned one rupee a day, while women workers received eight annas (half a rupee). The government started allotting small plots to them in the Ragaipura area of Karol Bagh. While the majority of labourers were from Rajasthan, the stone carvers came from Agra and Mirzapur, with some from Bharatpur. They were masters at stone carving and latticework. Their ancestors had built significant monuments like the Taj Mahal, Red Fort, and Jama Masjid.

 ‘Imperial Delhi’ and ‘New Delhi’

If you’re a resident of the capital, you would know the new capital of India, New Delhi, was inaugurated on February 13, 1931. According to D Johnson and Richard Watson’s book New Delhi: The Last Imperial City, King George V gave his approval to name the new capital “New Delhi” on December 31, 1926—well before its inauguration.

Before “New Delhi” was finalised, names like Imperial Delhi, Raisina, and Delhi South were considered. However, it was agreed that the name should include “Delhi.” After the decision, an official notification was issued. By then, the Viceroy’s House (now Rashtrapati Bhavan), Council House (Parliament House), South and North Blocks, and many of New Delhi’s roads were almost complete. Connaught Place was nearing completion and opened in 1933.
