  1. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/norfolk/4342973.stm Racist attack on statue of Sikh The statue of the Maharajah is in Thetford. Picture credit: Peter Bance Racists are believed to have vandalised a statue of a Sikh monarch, covering it with paint and Nazi swastika symbols. The statue of Maharajah Duleep Singh riding a horse, which stands in his adopted town of Thetford, Norfolk, was attacked early on Friday morning. Duleep Singh (1838-1893), the last native ruler of the Punjab in India, lived in the nearby Elvedon Hall, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The statue was erected by the Duleep Singh Centenary Trust in 1999. Its director Harbinder Singh said he was "very saddened" by what he suspected was a racially motivated attack. 'Cowardly imbeciles' He added: "But it in no way dents our affection and links with the local community of Thetford and East Anglia. "This is the act of mindless and cowardly imbeciles. It is insulting the values of all of us." Norfolk Police said they were treating the attack as of a "racial nature". Thousands of Sikhs visit sites associated with him. The Maharajah was the last native ruler of the Punjab.
  2. wow. pretty cool 'rough' guide to hola mahalla. thanks
  3. i agree man. if the western world didn't economically shaft the developing world in the first place there wouldn't be any economic migration. people will take advantage of any route to leave poverty and rights abuses. got to say the other guy is a proper sap to call in this shitty tabloid to investigate. he should have tried to stop it himself rather than blowing this issue up in the media. and perhaps news international should investigate the rabid racism of their readers rather than demonising immigrants.
  4. however i still think it is a relatively positive article
  5. i think if u try and describe sikhi in english and analyse with an anglicised thought process it will seem christianised.
  6. are steroids really that bad? many people take other supplements to bulk up such as whey protein, creatine, proGF etc. these are all ok so why not steroids? i am not sure wether i agree with them or not yet but reading the article above i can see that not taking performance enhancers can be good. but if that is the case why creatine etc?
  7. true, as infernal monk says, would any of the people in favour of polygamy here be willing to share their wives? if not explain why please?
  8. i agree. but how many people in this world would like to do kirtan at darbar sahib. how many are denied? all i am saying is that this person should not recieve special privelages because he is the descendant of a chardi-kalaa person. sorry if believing in meritocracy offends your views. the way that u guys have supported ur argument is wrong. rather than saying that it is wrong that he is being banned on the basis of religion ur fellow supporters in this thread are arguing that he should be allowed to do this sewa because he is mian mir's descendnt. personally i don't think this is a strong enuf argument. if u re-read my post i have made this clear.
  9. why should Mian Mir's descendants get any special privelages over anybody else? I am believe just having a holy man as a fore-father isn't good enough reason to demand to be allowed to play at harmandir sahib. if the guy has any special skills which haven't been mentioned in this thread then it may be a different matter, but as things stand i don't see the controversy.
  10. i would like to see how far this author would enjoy seeing his own religion mocked.
  11. it is quite ridiculous telling a married couple how they should behave with one another!! however maha-pavitar you say this is the view of tapoban. is that the case or is it the view of their contributors? do the views expressed on this site mean they are the views of sikhawareness?
  12. perhaps you should try creating an atmosphere which is conducive to further upliftment. try creating a good sangat where you can feel the same way you felt in camp, then you can all sit down and do simran etc together.
  13. could someone please translate the article and post it here. thanks in advance
  14. i heard some of this guys suff, its pretty hardcore but good, also slightly shocking hearing some of the stuff he's been up to.
  15. as long as u control your desires and your desires don't control u i think it is all good
  16. the death threats have been condemned publicly many times but the media is less prone to carry these statements. i only saw it on one BBC News page. there are a lot more carrying the story of death threats by 'the sikh community'.
  17. i think you do have a valid point here. when organisations that some people view as terrorist campaign on human rights grounds they will be viewed with scepticism. however i don't see many other jathabandis etc doing much about it. other than having the 'my crew is better than yours' attitude have any ither jathabandis done didly squat other than turn a blind eye and let the murders continue. maybe its about time some non militant organisations did start highlighting the crimes of the indian Govt. or maybe it just furthers there own selfish interests to carp on about the minority of khalistaanis who carried out abuses all day and ignore all the other groups carrying out terrorism (GOI, certain nihungs, RSS etc etc) ur probably right again please extrapolate on this statement. what was the mistake. that SOME people decided to take up arms when they saw fellow sikhs being picked up, tortured for days on end and finally murdered, all just because they came from a village where there was khalistani activity.
  18. what planet are you living on? the two don't have to be mutually exclusive events. Try drawing a venn diagram and u will see what i mean. it is pretty basic maths. ur above analoogy is like saying: Certain people who eat too many sweets get fat. Hence all fat people eat sweets? is this true? maybe they eat chips? i know crap example but just trying to show how lame your argument is. how does saying that some people became khalistanis in RESPONSE to persecution (hence a human rights issue for them) mean that only pro-khalistanis experienced it. Of course many people are persecuted in India, not just pro-khalistani sikhs; but it is a VALID argument to say the two are linked in certain instances. When people are abused to such an extent that there lives aren't worth living chances are they will pick up a gun and fight there oppressors. And it wasn't just the GOI that carried out the abuses, many parties were involved, and yes including some khalistani groups themselves! they also including some nihungs who went on murder sprees throughout Punjab (phoola and his hencmen like Bijla spring to mind). maybe, but i think it is a semi valid point for them to use human rights abuses. if they believe that by destroying the indian regimes hold in punjab they can improve human rights i think it is valid. I condemn the khalistanis who carried out this sort of activity. they are a discredit and should be punished accordingly if they murder innocent civilians. on the same hand i condemn the nihungs who carried out similar activities and terrorised punjabi villages and went round raping young girls etc etc. there is no guarantee. however sikhs will not be murdered just for being sikh. other abuses may still carry on, maybe they will get worse, hopefully they will become less. also u talk of criminal activity like honour killings etc. of course they will continue and should be dealt with by the courts accordingly, like they are now. the only difference is that mass murderers like sajjan kumar would not have immunity from prosecution like under the current indian justice system. so whats the solution. lets keep all sikhs as a sub class of humanity? why not ban them from voting, taking ne positions of responsibility etc. how can u jump from the fact that some people argue and fight to the fact that people cannot govern themselves? ur conclusions are invalid. if a sikh can be the president of india and we have many other educated persons i see no reason why sikhs cannot govern themselves. it is the half educated hater attitude displayed on threads like this which leads to violence and arguments. i am sure the organisers will be honoured to have ur blessings and the much needed moral support it will bring them.
  19. pretty dumb statement. its quite obvious why. they believe that if there was a khalistan then it would lead to a cessation of certain abuses, namely the abuses perpetuated by the indian security apparatus against sikhs for merely being sikhs.
