  1. Bhen ji, 'Nigura' means 'without a guru'. From before the times of Sikhi, there have always been initiation rites for people who wish to dedicate their live to a guru. In Sikhi, the first 9 forms of Guru Ji used charan pahul, Guru Gobind SIngh Ji gave us Khande Da Pahul. Without this, one can not become a Sikh of Guru Sahib. My point is that to become a Sikh of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, we need banis from Sri Dasam Granth. This fact alone means that it should be given the utmost respect. There are banis in there that at first glance (or due to translations) may seem to be 'anti-gurmat'. A deeper reading and vichar reveals that they are, in fact, in line with Adi Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Vichar is done of all 5 vikaars - kaam, krodh, loh, moh and hankaar. We find it ok to speak of 4 of these, but are afraid to deal with kaam, or even accept it exists. It does, and Guru Ji has shown us how to be aware of it and get rid of it. Also, the strongest proof that Sikhi is the 'third' panth, distinct from Hinduism and Islam, is found in Dasam Bani, in very blunt language that is irrefutable. Arguing on forums doesn't achieve anything. There were 3 separate, well publicised events in the past week where parkash was done of Sri Dasam Granth and bani read. Not one person turned up to any of these to do vichar with or even to ask questions to the Singhs present - some of whom have studied Gurbani all their lives and have the knowledge and experience to put doubts to rest.
  2. Of course it is enough, but are you saying we ignore the writings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji? What about Bhai Gurdas' Vaaran, Learning our history etc. The reason for doing Parkash is because there is no other way to read it - it is still Guru Sahib's bani and must be respected. Bear in mind that Amrit can't be prepared without Dasam Bani, and without Khande Da Pahul, one is nigura, and you can read what Guru sahib says about people with no Guru.
  3. Thanks for the info jaikaara. The reason I asked the question is that different people have told me different things - sometimes contradicting each other completely. Isn't amala powder for external use only - like a paste to apply on kesh? (By the way, for those who don't know, amala is Indian gooseberry, and its powder is great for reducing or slowing down the rate at which kesh go white. It does this by nourishing the hair roots and improving the health of hair strands.)
  4. The words, "Dasam Guru Granth" or "Guru Dasam Granth" mean 'Granth of the 10th Guru'. 'Sikh_for_life': I take it you are nigura - haven't received AMrit yet?
  5. WJKK! WJKF! Does anyone know what foods reduce the level of pitta in the body, and what foods to avoid if pitta is high? Dhanvaad.
  6. All this time I thought you were in uni or something, lol.
  7. Yes, but you have to have ishnan first - roughly 0015 at the earliest, when the new day starts. I don't remember the exact verse, but there is a shabad (posted below) which hints that we should start with Ishnan--> Simran --> read/ sing Gurbani. So you could do your Nitnem early, then rest/sleep for a bit then get up and carry on with the rest of your day. You can even have ishnan, do your simran, rest, then do your Nitnem. This helps if you're used to sleeping long hours and you want to cut down how much you sleep. Mėhlā 4. Gur saṯgur kā jo sikẖ akẖā▫e so bẖalke uṯẖ har nām ḏẖi▫āvai. One who calls himself a Sikh of the Guru, the True Guru, shall rise in the early morning hours and meditate on the Lord's Name. Uḏam kare bẖalke parbẖāṯī isnān kare amriṯ sar nāvai. Upon arising early in the morning, he is to bathe, and cleanse himself in the pool of nectar. Upḏes gurū har har jap jāpai sabẖ kilvikẖ pāp ḏokẖ lėh jāvai. Following the Instructions of the Guru, he is to chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. All sins, misdeeds and negativity shall be erased. Fir cẖaṛai ḏivas gurbāṇī gāvai bahḏi▫ā uṯẖ▫ḏi▫ā har nām ḏẖi▫āvai. Then, at the rising of the sun, he is to sing Gurbani; whether sitting down or standing up, he is to meditate on the Lord's Name. Jo sās girās ḏẖi▫ā▫e merā har har so gursikẖ gurū man bẖāvai. One who meditates on my Lord, Har, Har, with every breath and every morsel of food - that GurSikh becomes pleasing to the Guru's Mind.
  8. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa! Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! There is complete audio of Sri Dasam Granth by Bhai Onkar Singh at www.gurmatveechar.com, under "Gurbani Ucharan".
  9. "A_Sikh_FOr_Life" ji, have you undertaken Khande Da Pahul and accepted Guru Granth Sahib Ji as your guru? (Singh2, Inder etc, please don't reply to him until he answers this question)
  10. True, it's very inspiring. The modern lot are really put to shame!
  11. Send them an e-mail, but I don't think they are. You could print out the books, but they're big!
  12. What exactly do you have an issue with?
  13. There's always one, lol. If anything, it enforces the fact the Guru Granth Sahib Ji is our Guru. If you had issues, you could have attended the event and asked one of the learned Singhs there why they were doing the event. You still have your chance - make your way to Guru Hargobind Sahib Gurudwara, Coventry and ask the Singhs there.
  14. I didn't say Kalki was evil. I told you what Guru Sahib has written - that he will suffer from haumai and be killed. Why do you say Mehdi Avtar is Muslim? By the way, he too will suffer haumai at the end and be dealt with by Akaal Purakh. You call me an idiot but these are not my words, but those of Guru Nanak Dev ji's tenth form. So what are you implying? All this can be read in Chaubis Avtar, Sri Dasam Granth. Here (read the page the link will take you to, and the next): http://www.sridasam.org/dasam?Action=Page&p=1193 The quotes you posted do nothing to back up your claim that Guru Sahib "will come again as Kalki". Maybe this is one example of where Sikhi differs with your mat. Thanks for bringing it up. Guru Rakha.
  15. From patshahi10.org: In an event organised by 'Sikh Jago Lehar' at Guru Nanak Bhavan Sri Amritsar, Sikh scholars, theologians, and representatives of various Panthic organisations gathered to mark the release of epic book on the history of Sri Dasam Granth by Dr. Harbhajan Singh, Punjabi University Patiala. The first copy of the book was presented to the Head Granthi of Takhat Sri Hazoor Sahib, Giani Pratap Singh. The formation of a committee called 'Sri Dasam Granth Prabodh Sabha' was also announced at the occasion. The sabha which constitutes of Jathedars of Takhats, Granthis of Sri Darbar Sahib, Sikh scholars, historians, and representatives of various panthic organisations including Nihung Jathebandis, Sant Samaj and Damdami Taksal will work towards countering the wrong prachaar against Sri Dasam Granth which is being carried out by some quarters. An open challenge has been given to those who are engaged in negative propaganda against Sri Dasam Granth to face the committee within a month given that they have the intellect to understand the intricacies of poetry including formation of Chhand.
  16. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa! Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Bhen ji, Where does Guru Sahib say the above? As far as I can understand, in Sri Dasam Granth, Guru Ji makes it very clear that Kalki is not an avtar at the same level as Guru Nanak Dev Ji. He will suffer from hankaar and will have to be killed by Mehdi Avtar. Guru Ji is on a whole other level - sarab kala samrath. It is really funny that you say this. Not long ago, there was a Muslim who wrote pages and pages to make the point that we Sikhs are nothing but Shia Muslims. It is like you complete the circle - yin and yang! By the way, nobody is out to 'get you'. You will have noticed that the original poster's post was initially ignored.
  17. I was hoping you would post that in relpy. Just wanted to show that it is very easy to take one line out of context and miss the point. The fact that Guru Sahib was a pooran avtar doesn't contradict the fact that Akaal Purkh isn't born and doesn't die. The same goes for our Atmas. We have to start thinking on the atmic level when dealing with Gurbani, not just the black & white physical level. There is no need to twist arths into nonsensical meanings just so they fit in with our understanding. That is manmat. Read Gurbani first before deciding what is Gurmat and what is Manmat. Some people build an image in their minds of what Gurbani should say, then twist it to fit in with their mat, rather than changing themselves to follow Gurbani. Sorry for taking this thread off-topic, carry on.
  18. Ang 968, Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Satto & Balwand speak of Guru Sahib: Kal vicẖ ḏẖū anḏẖār sā cẖaṛi▫ā rai bẖāṇ. In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, there was only pitch darkness. Then, He rose like the sun to illuminate the darkness. Saṯahu kẖeṯ jamā▫i▫o saṯahu cẖẖāvāṇ. He farms the field of Truth, and spreads out the canopy of Truth. Niṯ raso▫ī ṯerī▫ai gẖi▫o maiḏā kẖāṇ. Your kitchen always has ghee and flour to eat. Cẖāre kundāʼn sujẖī▫os man mėh sabaḏ parvāṇ. You understand the four corners of the universe; in your mind, the Word of the Shabad is approved and supreme. Āvā ga▫oṇ nivāri▫o kar naḏar nīsāṇ. You eliminate the comings and goings of reincarnation, and bestow the insignia of Your Glance of Grace. A▫uṯri▫ā a▫uṯār lai so purakẖ sujāṇ. You are the Avataar, the Incarnation of the all-knowing Primal Lord. Many more pankitis saying the same thing....
