Spiritual Inquiry with Khanda & Heart TIME FOR CHANGE Handsworth Mela – dishonour, behzti – is this the state of Sikhi??? “Jin Bhe adab na baani dhara, jano so sikh nehi hamara†“He who has no fear or respect of Gurbani, know that he is not my Sikh.†(Extract from Sikh Rehatnama) http://www.petitiononline.com/sikhmela/petition.html BEADBI (intentional and unintentional disrespect) of Maharaaj Guru Granth Sahib jee is something that as Sikhs we cannot, and will not tolerate. Currently there is general unrest in the Sikh youth as more importance has been placed on this issue from Sikhs worldwide over recent years. We don’t take Guru Maharaaj into halls, hotels, pubs and clubs because of our love and respect for Guru ji, but then why do we take maharaaj into a park; where we have no control over the code of conduct in the parks boundaries. Where ever Guru Ji is present on thakt the atmosphere of the boundaries should be the same as a Gurdwara. The same behaviour and activities should be going on as a Gurdwara. Does this happen in the Handsworth Mela? Even maharaaj Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s horse would not enter a field where tobacco was planted. Yet we annually take saroop’s of Maharaaj Guru Granth Sahib Ji in to an environment where tobacco stubs litter the ground and where people enter under the intoxication of various substances, be it unintentionally, this is something that must be evaluated and changed as there is continued discontent in the Sikh youth. Do you think it is acceptable to take Maharaaj into areas with rave type atmospheres, loud and noisy music, rides, with inappropriate social interaction, with a non-existent dress code, where people smoke and drink? The problem lies not with the mela in principle but whether or not we are showing true respect for Guru jee. This isn’t even taking into account the recent bad publicity we have received from last years detrimental shenanigans with the “Sikh on Sikh†violence. Just type “vaisakhi mela†and “BBC†into www.youtube.com and see the negative social profiling of Sikhs in the media coverage as well as the camera phone videos of bhangra and Punjabi gang/thug/yob culture. Then think and decide for yourself… Are these really Sikh values? Are we moving forwards? If so towards what? Why are we continually causing confusion between religion and culture? What is the point of a darbar in Boundaries were corrupt activities are taking place. This is total disrespect to Guru Ji and it is time for the sangat to wake up. “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything†“Do nothing then nothing changes†“Prevention is better then cures†With older generations of the Sikh community currently questioning the purpose and actual parchar of a mela, we are merely suggesting careful planning so as the youth and older community members can work together to try to avoid the disrespect and BEADBI that is prevalent in the “Vaisakhi†mela as it is. Its been appening unde our noses for years, but he majority tend to either ignore it or bruh it under the carpet. This beadbi is NO DIFFERENT to what organisations like Respect 4 Guru Granth Sahib (R4G) try to stop. At smethick 8 youth from a local Muslim gang attacked women, elderly and children. Did the Sikh council provide support or compensation? At handsworth young bystanders were injured in the massive sword fight; were them victims given any support? At handsworth mela last year bystanders who were only defending themselves against the rampage that occurred were arrested and hit with police batons; was there any compensation to the victims of police brutality? At handsworth mela, the gang called Aston panthers come in with their dogs and intimidate and humiliate the sangat. They make sexual advances to our sisters and mothers infront of their male-counter parts and make a mockery of the Singhs. Why aren’t tickets sold to allow entrance into the mela? A year on and no apologies or statements have been made by the Sikh Council of Gurdwaras in Birmingham. We spend 80 thousand pound and what do we have to show apart from disrespect and humiliation. If you want to have a mela, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee should not be present and a more responsible approach is needed. Tickets for entrance should be sold in Gurdwaras etc We ask all the Sikh Sangat to boycott the Mela until the Sikh Council have agreed not to take Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji to the Park. Does this happen in the Handsworth Mela? Guru Nanak Dev Ji roamed the whole of South Asia!! OMG!!!! Shock horror! Thats for sure Anti-Sikh!! (Being sarcastic) Did you also know that they taken Guru Granth Sahib outside during wars for example in WWI and WWII? Today I feel that the problem is that Guru Jis bani is boxed in four walls, seva is only to be done inside the gurdwaray, and only done for gurdwaray. There is no protocol or maryada justifying this practice, even the illustrious revisionist preacher Manvir Singh Khalsa in his account of the origins of this "Maryada" shows it to arise from "parbhat pheris" organised by lo and behold, the AKJ! The AKJ are a 20th century organisation, hence any maryada originating from them can hardly lay claim to being authentic! Nagar Kirtans "expose" Sri Guru Granth Sahib to the public where there is no control over who is smoking, has their head uncovered, is drinking, wearing shoes, etc etc etc, yet every year Sikhs of all communities, jathas, sampradhas, organisations etc all flock for these "nagar kirtans", which are a joke to be frank and do more harm than good (i.e. disrupt traffic, which in itself poses health risks and problems for the emergency services, not to mention problems for businesses and other services having their roads closed down, before we even get to the subject of that awful noise that get blared out over the loudspeakers when XYZ Singh decides to "shout" rather than "talk" into the mic! Oh, and let's not forget the piles of super healthy "vegetarian" food that gets served - what are they called, yes, Samosas, Pakoras, Bhaturas!!!). Why are we busy fighting families and making a public mockery of our community in the press through the various "acronym(ed)" organisations of Chardi-Kala Sikhs, if they are really concerned about these issues, then let's face facts and sort out our own institutions - these Nagar Kirtans are fully supported by the very same people who oppose the activities highilghted in the main post! 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

But veer Ji, do you not think there is a better way of spreading Gurmat than nagar kirtans and melai, which to be honest are nothing but embarrasing Punjabi political/communal picnics. The first and most commonsensical rule for sharing Gurmat would be to target it at the audience i.e. British. Who in the UK is doing this... In the old days (well not that old), Nihangs, Nirmalai, Udasi used to wander from village to village, go to the main celebrations etc with the intent of spreading Gurmat, how is that traditonal method used today... Theres usually atlaest 1 major jorh mela per month. Jorh Melay are held to commemorate a specific festival i.e. Gurpurb, Auspicous day or Barsi of Mahapursh. Akhand Paths are held and kathavachik, keertanis and dhadhis etc are invited. As there is going to be a large gathering stall owners sweet makers and all other 'whealer dealer types' come and create a festive atmosphere. The purpose of the Jorh Mela is in the name - for sangata to meet and come together. At any jorh mela whatever dals are present bring their respected nishans (battle standards) and unite as one. I'm not sure how its related to Nagar Keertan, perhaps your thinking of 'Mohalla' which is often done at the end of some jorh melay.
