Polygamy And Sikhism

Recommended Posts

Just a copy paste off a Muslim site, actually displaying something, but some of these things are mentioned in other sources. for instance Max Arthur MacAuliffe who published a huge set of volumes on Sikhism converted to Sikhism (on his death bed his last action was doing japji sahib) the English gentleman used some of the best scholars of that time, gianis to help him make his books, some things he mentioned controversy were that the Gurus allowed Sikhs to eat meat it own topic, he also mentioned Guru Gobind Singh had 3 wife's. Now these days if you talk to someone about this, they loose there temper instead of issuing an intelligent answer. There is a video on youtube from Goora Sikhs who claimed they studied some historical books and claim he had 2 wife's simultaneously and were married at young age, and was normal at that time. But for Sikhs we see the Gurus life the life Sikhs should live, but maryada forbids polygamy.

Below from site: - http://www.islamawareness.net/Polygamy/pol...rticle0003.html

Polygamy is wide spread among different cultures of the world. According to one study out of '853' cultures only 16 percent stipulate monogamy. Historically most of the Sikh kings practiced polygamy in 18th and 19th centuary. The Guru Amar Dass ji has clearly defined that conjugal relationship has to be two bodies and one soul phenomenon. It vividly conforms to the monogamy idealism.

It appears very paradoxical and enigmatic to a student of Sikh history when one confronts the practice of polygamy by some Sikh Gurus. Historically the following Gurus had more than one wife.

1. Guru Arjan Dev.

Wives

- Ram Deyi, daughter of Surri Khatri (Charan Dass) of village Mour married year Bik 1622. Guruji was 11 years old at that time Guru Amar Dass was on Guru Gaddi. (Ref. DR. Gopal Singh, Kesar Singh Chibbar, Mohinder Kaur Gill)

*** It is a controversial issue among the Sikh historians

- Ganga devi

2. Guru Hargobind

Wives

- Damodri Devi

- Nanki Devi

- Maha Devi

3. Guru Hari Rai

Wives

- Prem Kaur

- Chand Kaur

- Anokhi Devi

- Ram Kaur

- Laddli

- Krishan Kaur

- Kalyani

4. Guru Gobind Singh

Wives

- Sahib Kaur Ji

- Jeeto Rani

- Sundri Devi

Many causes about the practice of polygamy among the humans have been sited by eminent scholars...

Helen Fisher states that men seek polygamy to spread their genes while women join harems to acquire resources and ensure the survival of their young. Polygamy enables men to have more children. Most of the scientific evidence stacks up in favor of monogamy. Desmond Morris summarised the explanations by saying that the pair bonding is a trademark of humans.

But, even then the question arises, why Some Gurus did practice it?

Most of Sikh scholars never touch the subject probably due to the divinity and spirituality associated with Sikh Gurus.

Very few explanations have been given which can be summarised as such...

1. It was the Divine will.

2. One should not raise the issue as they were super humans and their life incidents are beyond the comprehension of commoners.

3. With improved economy of Guru Ghars, the Gurus could afford multiple marriages...

Spirituality, Awarness, Enlightment has nothing to do with polygamy, monogamy, hetrosexuality and homosextuality. This state of being is above and beyond all this.

Guru Amar Dass Ji thus said

There is a pauri in Bhai Gurdass vaars that says something like "The sikh of the Guru lives in celibacy by marrying one wife only"... So i do not think sikhs are allowed to marry more than one woman...

depends on how you look at the vaar. the key words you mention are "celibacy" and "one". my own view of this vaar , probably wrong is that atma(soul-bride) being commited to ONE waheguru. and the celibacy being that one does not look elsewhere. Bhai Gurdas could not write one wife only, in the time of Pancham Patshah who had 2 wives.

Guru Arjan Ji had 1 wife

Guru Hargobind Ji had 1 wife

Guru Har Rai Ji had 1 wife

Guru Gobind Singh Ji had 1 wife

If wife dies, person is allowed to remarry as per Gurmat.

Bhai Gurdas says Eka Naaree Jatee Hoaye Par Naaree Dhee Bhen Bakhanai

Even in Gurbani, we see the word naaree. Naaree is a singular and if there were more wives allowed, it would have been ghar kee naarin instead of Ghar Kee Naar teaagai andhaaa

Some Gurbani quotes are below:

ਘਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਅੰਧਾ ॥ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਸਿਉ ਘਾਲੈ ਧੰਧਾ ॥ {ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ, ਪੰਨਾ ੧੧੬੫}

Ghar Kee Naar Teaagai Andhaa || Par Naaree Seo Ghaalai Dhandhaa ||

A morally blind person leaves his wife and looks to indulge with other women.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji only had 1 wife. Even poet Raam agrees to this.

From the below (Bhai Gurdas jee's Vaaran), it seems that polygamy is prohibited in Sikhism.

ਦੁਹ ਨਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਦੂਲਹਾ ਦੁਹ ਮੁਨਸਾ ਦੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਵਿਣਸੈ।

Duh Naaree Daa Valahaa Duhu Mounasaa Dee Naari Vinasai.

दुह नारी दा वलहा दुहु मुणसा दी नारि विणसै ।

Husband of two women and the wife of two husbands are bound to perish;

Bhul chuk maaf
