There is a real cool Akhara called Hanuman Akhara in Batala. ( on the Umarpura to Batala road).

All done the old school way.

When I went to visit there was one chap in his early twenties who was doing dands (Hindu pushups)for at least 30 mins continuous! He must have done hundreds of reps; and he could have done hundreds more if he stopped looking at himself in the mirror whilst doing it. LOL

He refered to some of the pupils who follow the full akhara maryada as 'Hanuman de Bhagat'.

Jattboot, most traditional Kushti Akhaaras in North India (probably South and East as well) are Hanuman Akharas.

As most traditional artistic pursuits are dedicated to Sarasvati and most traditional academic pursuits to Sri Ganesha, so too, traditional wrestling pursuits are usually dedicated to Hanuman Ji.

There is also a very old school Hanuman Akhaara in Amritsar - all the old school way i.e. training involving digging pits, climbing 20-30 ft ropes, intensive jogging(bare footed), ridiculous no of dands and betkan, 15 stone walking massages etc etc.

You hit an excellent point though, the tradition is a fast disappearing one, as most western influenced youth prefer to train in the many new gyms and get 'sculpted' rather than develop more natural strength/speed/skill...

As always, hope for the future lies in the culturally strong South!

The Akhaara are in effect places of worship - akin to Mandhirs, obedience must be payed to Hanuman Ji each day - and strong spiritual values/ethos taught alongside the intense physical regime.

Strangely enough, out of the dozen practitioners there only one was a Singh - a young boy of about 15 yo.

But like Shahhediyan said most kids these days want to just add bulk to their bodies and thus train accordingly. they end up with massive bodies, supposedly asthetically pleasing, but with no real strength or agility. They have no functional strength and cannot use all that muscle mass effectively.

Sometimes its a case where they do weight training but neglect body weight training (Dund Batkha). Doing weight training alone can make you stiff and you'll end up with white muscle. If you do body weight training, it encourages blood to flow into the muscles and you can get lean with body weight training, its just a matter of your diet. Ive know people who can lift a lot of weight but there body isnt tonned, this is down to diet.

Its not a bad thing doing weights, weights were lifted in India long ago, its just a case of not getting carried away with it.
