‘Inhuman’ burial at sea draws attack from Muslim experts

The burial at sea of Osama bin Laden has drawn criticism from Muslims in Saudi Arabia, his birth-place, and elsewhere in the Islamic world, amid concerns that his body was not handled according to the correct religious rituals.

US officials said that bin Laden’s body was washed and shrouded in cloth, according to Islamic traditions, and “eased’” into the north Arabian Sea.

Clerics say that dead Muslims, regardless of their actions in life, must be buried in the ground according to Islamic rituals, not dumped into an open sea where they could be preyed upon.

US officials said they did not want a burial site on land that could have become a “shrine”. Critics say the claim reflects ignorance of sharia law as well as the beliefs of bin Laden’s sympathisers, loosely described as Salafi, who oppose the idolisation of the dead. A friend of the bin Laden family described the burial as “inhuman and an insult”.

“Whoever advised the Americans to do this is a clueless extremist,” said Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi analyst. “What shrines are they talking about? Salafis don’t like shrines. They bury their dead in un- marked graves. The US could have handled the matter with more sensitivity. It arouses sympathy for him.”

Ahmed al-Tayeb, the grand imam of al-Azhar mosque in Cairo, the world’s most prestigious seat of Sunni learning, has also condemned “throwing the body into the sea”.

If true, this “contradicts all the religious values and human norms”, a statement said. “The grand imam asserted that it is forbidden in Islam to deform the dead, regardless of their beliefs.”

In Indonesia, the most populous Muslim nation, the Ulema Council, the country’s highest Islamic body, condemned the burial at sea. Amidhan, the council’s chairman, said: “A Muslim, whatever his profession, even a criminal – their rites must be respected. There must be a prayer and the body should be wrapped in white cloth before being buried in the earth, not at sea.”

The quick burial and lack of pictures also fuelled suspicion about the nature of bin Laden’s killing and sparked internet debate.

But other prominent Muslims said the US had little alternative.

“People were very upset at the way he was buried, but they forgot that there is no alternative,” said Saud Kateb, a Saudi media analyst. “Where is he supposed to be buried? Before we blame America we have to remember how many Muslims he has killed. We either embrace or reject him completely.”

In Jeddah, where bin Laden’s extended family reside, it was not clear whether a traditional wake would be held. Some observers suggested the family would allow only close friends and relatives to offer condolences.

“I will give my condolences to the family because they are a good family. They have nothing to do with him,” said the family friend.

Saudi authorities said it was hoped that with the death an “evil has ended”.

“He has been an evil to himself, to his immediate family and to the Arab countries as a whole,” Prince Ahmed bin Abdul- aziz, deputy interior minister, said at a meeting of Gulf interior ministers in the United Arab Emirates. He added that while bin Laden might be a symbol of the al-Qaeda terror organisation, Saudi Arabia did not know if he was its “main driver”.

Between 2003 and 2006, Saudi Arabia suffered terrorist attacks, leaving scores dead. The campaign was waged by militants inspired by bin Laden who vowed to topple the royal family. The threat has abated, but the government still frequently announces aborted attacks and arrests.

But pissing on someone's grave is not the Sikh thing to do. This is something that Americans would do. Osama and Islamic imperialism is evil but so is western imperialism and especially it's former leader Bush who was responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths in Iraq alone.

Right now, Sikhs just need to turn neutral in the so called war on terror between Islamic and western imperialist powers. Both sides are evil and terrorists. Sikhs should be focusing on building their own strength rather then choosing sides in other people's wars.

Otherwise you just become another dumb Sikh in the middle of something beyond his understanding.

that u r absolutely right kd singh saab bas the biggest prob was his intolerance to people of other faith, with all the wealth he spent in a destructive cause he would have used his smart brains to see that no muslim sleeps hungry

This intolerance is nothing new.we have this type of mentality in many many muslims.

The truth is that we don't have any real idea of his (Bin laden) personal attitude towards Sikhs/Sikhi. I'm not saying it was necessarily positive but unquestioningly buying into the whole 'infidel hating Sullah primitive' caricature of him pumped out by goray is dumbass for a variety of reasons. Maybe this image was a reflection of reality? Maybe reality was more complex than that?

Who knows.

This isn't showing sympathy for any side before anyone jumps in with that. Just trying to keep aloof from the narrative pumped out for the masses of sheep out there.

upon that u expect the goray to not hate you for this ! man u stay in their land and still wont think good for them !

post 9/11 they mistook our brethren for osama's types and killed some apne and now by saying that you should be neutral towards osama's killing you are only adding to the mystery that we r osama's side ..man...this attitude will kill us .

even in india when the khalistanis were killing civilians be it sikh or hindu by bombing public transport there wasnt any condemnation from apne and see what public anger turned into ? so what did we achieve ? 84 slaughter..have we not learnt from the past ?????

That is chumcha talk. Do you know how much land goray sit in right now without giving respect to the people who were there before them?? You should try reading more. Examples are America, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, until recently India and large swathes of Africa too.

This isn't our business, the same way the goray here haven't made the Indian government killing Sikhs their own business.

Are you a chumcha scared type person? You certainly sound like it?

Geelani calls for Friday funeral prayers for Osama

http://www.rediff.com/news/report/geelani-calls-for-friday-funeral-prayers-for-osama/20110505.htm

Hardline Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani [ Images ] has called for funeral prayers on Friday for terrorist Osama bin Laden [ Images ], who was shot dead in Pakistan on May 2 by a US navy team.

Geelani has appealed to imams and people to hold funeral prayers in absentia for bin Laden after the Friday prayers in the afternoon, a Hurriyat spokesman said in a statement.

Terming him a 'martyr', Geelani said bin Laden was not just one person but "he represented a thinking which opposed foreign occupational forces".

"His heart bore the pain of the entire Muslim ummah (community). He gave up his life of comfort to fight for their cause," the statement said.

The separatist leader said he wanted to participate in the funeral prayers but he has been placed under house arrest by the police since early this morning.

Geelani appealed to people to pray for the liberation of Kashmir [ Images ], Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan from the occupation of forces.

Fidel Castro slams assassination of Bin Laden:

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/americas/05/05/cuba.castro.bin.laden/index.html

Havana, Cuba (CNN) -- Former Cuban President Fidel Castro slammed the method used to kill Osama bin Laden on Thursday, saying there is no excuse for "assassinating" an unarmed man in front of his family.

"Whatever the actions attributed to bin Laden, the assassination of an unarmed human being surrounded by his family constitutes an abhorrent act," Castro wrote in an essay published in state media.

Castro criticized bin Laden for "international terrorism" and said Cuba showed solidarity with the United States after the "brutal" September 11 attacks.

However, in the article Castro calls the killing of bin Laden an "execution" by U.S. Navy SEALs and says the attack and the subsequent burial at sea "show fear and insecurity, and turn him into a much more dangerous person."

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has told reporters bin Laden and his family lived on the second and third floors of his compound, and they were cleared last, with bin Laden killed toward the end of the siege.

Bin Laden was not armed but did put up resistance when U.S. forces entered the compound, he said.

One of bin Laden's daughters has told Pakistani interrogators that she saw her father shot, a senior Pakistani intelligence source said Wednesday. The daughter, believed to be 12 or 13 years old, was among those left behind at the compound after Monday's U.S. raid, the source said.

In the article, Castro also said Pakistan's laws had been violated and its "national dignity offended."

U.S. President Barack Obama has said the United States will not release the photos of bin Laden's corpse. While some U.S. politicians have said the photos should be released, others have said the photos would only serve to inflamme feelings among bin Laden supporters.

Castro concludes in his essay that American public opinion will turn in time.

"After the initial euphoria, public opinion in the United States will end up criticizing the methods, which," he wrote, "far from protecting its citizens, will end up multiplying the feelings of hate and venegence toward them."

Taliban kill 2 Sikhs, send heads to Pak gurdwara

Omer Farooq Khan, TNN, Feb 22, 2010, 12.28am IST

Tags:Taliban

PESHAWAR/NEW DELHI: The Taliban has reportedly beheaded two Sikhs in Pakistan's lawless tribal region bordering Afghanistan and sent the heads to a gurdwara.

Jaspal Singh and Mahan Singh, both businessmen, were kidnapped from Tira Valley, in Khyber agency, and Darra Adamkheil, in Orakzai agency, on January 19 and held for ransom. Sources in the area told TOI on Sunday that they were killed because they were paying `protection' money to a rival faction.

Jaspal and Mahan were reportedly told to convert to Islam or face death. When they refused, their heads were chopped off and sent to the Bhai Joga Singh gurdwara in Peshawar.

DID OSAMA ASK SHAHEED BHAI JASPAL SINGH AND MAHAN SINGH WHETHER THEY WERE ARMED ????

THEY WERE ASKED WHETHER THEY WOULD CONVERT TO ISLAM OR DIE !!!

DO WE EXPECT TO BE HUMAN WITH SUCH A PERSON WHO KILLED PEOPLE BASED ON HIS OWN THOUGHT PROCESS, DID HE THINK ABOUT HUMANITY ???

The thing with the war between Islamic imperialists and western imperialists is that none of them follow the proper conduct of war. For us we think it is wrong to kill an unarmed person because our Dharm teaches us that. But Americans pick and choose which rules they want to follow of the Geneva convention. Same thing with the Muslims. They will not show mercy to an unarmed combatant either especially if the combatants happens to be non-Muslims. Like I said earlier this war is a war between two evils.
