The word kara itself has an interesting history/etymology:

It apparently comes from Farsi and means something like a slave bangle there.

Once I heard a Kathakar says that hand cuffs in Punjabi/Hindi/Urdu means Hath Karhi.

Karha is also a Hath Karhi which represents our bond with our Guru who is our master.
