I think some 'freshies' are naive to the possibility of racism, unfortunately

A terrified Sikh mum-of-three has told how her family have been left ‘traumatised’ after a sickening racist attack. The mum, from Rowley Regis, was the victim of a ‘racially aggravated assault’ before her home was attacked whilst her children hid in fear.

The family had just moved into their new forever home - but say they no longer feel safe in the property. The mum said this was the ‘first time’ the family had experienced a hate crime in the UK.

The family, originally from Punjab, have been supported by local community organisation Shere Panjab and other Sikh groups. West Midlands Police said a 20-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault and criminal damage - she has been bailed while enquiries continue.

The incident occurred on the evening Wednesday 19 July - just two weeks after the family moved into their new home. The mum was assaulted after she confronted a group who had allegedly taken her child’s bike.

The family were then targeted at their home and were left with a broken window and door.

The mum, whose identity we are protecting, said her three children have been left ‘traumatised’ and are ‘scared to go to sleep at night.’ Speaking to BirminghamLive through an interpreter, she said: “We were so happy when we bought this house, but that joy went away instantly. We don’t know if we are safe here anymore.

“The kids were terrified after it happened - they wouldn’t go to sleep. The two younger ones get frightened whenever they hear a noise. This is the first time we’ve ever experienced anything like this.”

The family have expressed their gratitude to Shere Panjab for their support and say they have been supported by their neighbours and members of the community. “We don’t feel completely safe yet but things have gotten easier,” said the mum.

“Neighbours have told us that this is a one-off and not a regular occurrence. We’re not here to move, we bought this house for a reason - we’re not going to let this force us out.”

A representative of the Shere Panjab community organisation said: “As soon as we found out what had happened we reached out to the family to make sure they were safe. We provided support for the family and helped secure the property with CCTV and patrolled the area. We’ve dealt with issues like this before and make regular visits to the family. “

Good to see some mainstream media is finally grasping that SP is a community organisation and not some 'gang' of hoodlums. Great work by the B'ham sangat in supporting this family.
