  1. ive been looking into this word jati, and it seems to indicate that it actually means true to one's word. That is, whatever promises a man makes, or whatever words come out of his mouth, he will keep their jat, ie he will honour it. looking at the monk who self imolated, i am beginning to think that this man was a jati, ie true to his word and steadfast in his faith. have any of you heard the term jatt-satt? what does this mean to you? from Mahan Kosh: ਜਤੁ - jatu - जतु ਸੰ. Let self-control be the furnace, and patience the goldsmith. further use of this word is Aad Guru ji translates as follows : self-control, celibacy, self-restraint, abstinency, modesty. looking back the line by Bhai Gurdas : eka mari jati hoe dusre dhee bhen jane im thinking it could be looked at as: One is self-restrained to his woman, regarding others as mothers and sisters.
  2. they were told to use panjabi ages ago, but probabaly knew that its gona be years b4 anyone checks up.
  3. dont know if he was actually a part of the nirmala order, but he took vidiya from taksal, and he is a expert on vedant, hence the name vedanti. i saw him once in Darbar Sahib, coming to Sri Harimandir Sahib.
  4. dilawar singh didnt just blow himself up, he blew up a papi and had to blow himself up to do so. i dont see anything different between Dilawar Singhs act, and the act of the sikhs at Chamkaur sahib, going to confront the enemy knowing there was no way they would survive. That could also be called a suicide charge by the sikhs. Sikhs did suicide bombing against pakistan in the wars as well. otherwise this guy is something tho, to have done that, cos you can see the reaction on the police who are psushing the people back and then when they see he is on fire, they just stand in amazement. other people have given their lives in similiar fashions to awaken the conscious of govts, two that come to mind are Bobby Sands of the Republican Sinn Fein, and Darshan Singh Pheruman, who both died during hunger strike. They could both be classed as suicide, but both are known as Martyrs by their respective communities. (irish and sikh).
  5. or from the forums they debate in.
  6. well seeing the guy asked the question in 2004, i pretty much think he has ridden not just this storm, but many others in that time!
  7. Hi everyone just me, this discussion was locked on sikhcontrolfreaksangat but there was aquestion/query that i had. i would like topresent that to the sangat here. BhaiGurdas Ji writes " Eka Naari jati hoe" what is the meaning of the "A" after the Ek. Ek would mean one. Also english translations give the word Jati as celibate, but can Jati also mean steadfast as well?
  8. that is normal, bro. if it is troubling you try power-napping, while you are doing something that is not thought intensive, like marking homework, driving your car, or talking to your wife etc, you get the idea.
  9. maybe the family shouls hang a portrait of Dhatt on the statue of Bhagat Singh, in Jalsndhar and other areas, to let the public know what the panjab police did. it would certainly get more people asking questions.
  10. so she sed "brother, i dont understand english". if she called him brother, he should just move onto the next girl/her friend/sister. If she sed" saaliya/kuttiya, panjabi bol..." he might have had a chance.
  11. it comes down to individual responsibility aboutn their actions, and the possible reactions of those actions should be understood. i think in the Uk,the welfare state makes things like this worse, cos if the girl knew she isnt gonna get a free flat and all her bills paid, she would think twice about doing it.
  12. in Guru Granth Sahib, maharaj tells us "that many times you were aborted..." in the cycle of 8.4, but this is in refernce to the value of Human chola.
  13. bro its not that they were ignorant, my point is that the Sikhs were insignificant as a community for US, we were(like many) a grain of sand in a desert to them. Also, i dont think that india was any kind of a threat to the US, although they sided with russia in the cold war(mainly down to control freak rulers), and the US had what to gain from supporting Sikhs against India? for the US, Afghanistan was a direct confrontation with USSR, but any confrontation with India would have had little or no impact on the cold war.
  14. there's 2 things that are different from the mid 80s and now, concerning US and the sikhs. i bet in the mid 80s the only time the US would have heard of sikhs was in 1984, even now i suspect we barely figure on their radar across the world. also, with different avenues of approach, the Sikhs have began to make their voices heard in US, albeit because mainly because of the 9-11 repercussions on our community. Modi case i suspect was to please the muslim world, after all they were his victims in gujerat.
  15. dalsingh ji, i dont think that any sikhs in india feel there is any merit, in advocating their rights through violence. the police have always done this crime of stitching people up. usually at the behest of the ruling party. the vienna thing was more of a spontanoues act, rather than a planned act.
  16. the intent to destroy the sikhs in delhi at least, is easily proven. we look at the fact of over 2773 recorded deaths, but there were something like 20,000 sikhs that were injured. Again it comes down to money, as Canada and India value trade more than human rights. India has always used its trade with european countries as a weapon, when it comes to human rights record.
  17. there is a yoga channel on sky ch 275. they show kundalini yoga as well.
  18. this is what we need! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nPvqZG8mLM Brother Lee Love! come on everybody sing: Brother Lee! Brother Lee! BROTHER LEE LOVE!!!
  19. what are the merits of a nagini spear over a plain spear? Wouldnt a whole lot more force and energy be needed into penetrate a body/target with a nagini spear? The plain spear would do the job just as well wouldnt it? with a lot less effort?
  20. what are pressure points? how does hitting one make a person fall to the ground?
  21. nice one shaheediyan bro. im rubbish at chess, but i think that you have to have a certain level of intelligence, to play this game. as a game or sport, chess is a quite forgotten game, now we have world of warcraft and ps3's and whatnot. Im rubbish at them games as well. is there an ideal age to introduce a child to chess? son is 7, but is this too young?
  22. Guru never banned it, he just banned it for Sikhs to consume. If Guru Ji had banned it wholesale how would he be different fro Aurangzeb in this respect?
  23. people used to get married a lot younger ie 10 - 12 years old, but the girls parents only sent her to her in-laws when they felt she was able to carry out the responsibilities of married/family life, serving not only her husband but her in-laws as well. Now we have the later marriage age and instant moving in to the in-laws home. But i remember once when 21 was an old age to get married. I remember a documentary on Nepal, where the practice of marrying young, 12-16 is still practised, and as I mentioned once the girls parents feel she is ready for family life, they will send her to her in-laws. Now focus on education, and the better standard of life it brings, is bringing this tradition of young marriage to an end. Parents woud rather their daughter became a doctor or summat, and live well, rather than just get her married at a young age just to fulfil their own responsibilities.
  24. what if it was a Sikh theocracy? would you feel different?
