  4. Jagtar Singh Hawara has escaped the gallows, but it is death for Balwant Singh in the Beant Singh assassination case. A Babbar Khalsa International activist, Hawara has been branded as an “organiser of a heinous crime”, but the death penalty awarded to him by the trial court in Punjab’s then Chief Minister Beant Singh’s assassination case has been commuted to life sentence. He will remain behind bars till his last. Other convicts, Lakhwinder Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Shamsher Singh, will continue to serve life terms. Hearing the case on near continuous basis since February, the Bench of Justice Mehtab Singh Gill and Justice Arvind Kumar clarified that Hawara “shall not be released from the prison for the rest of his life”. Hawara was merely a tool in the hands of the prime conspirators and was not even present in the city when the blast took place, are some of the factors that weighed on the court’s mind while commuting the death penalty. On the other hand, Balwant Singh’s refusal to defend himself and his confessional statements led him to the scaffold. “Without having any evidence in favour of Balwant Singh to go into, so that we can have a second thought on the murder reference of Balwant Singh, coupled with his three confessional statements, there is no other alternative with us but to confirm the findings of the trial court qua Balwant Singh,” the Bench ruled. The defence was represented by Baldev Singh, while SK Saxena and RK Handa appeared for the CBI. Speaking for the Bench, Justice Gill asserted: “Hawara, though part of the bigger conspiracy to eliminate the former Chief Minister, kept himself outside the main action. As rightly argued by the counsel for the CBI, he was a tool in the hands of Mehal Singh and Wadhawa Singh (proclaimed offenders), who were guiding him from Pakistan. Hawara, it comes out, was an active member of the conspiracy like Shamsher Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Lakhwinder Singh, who have been awarded life sentence.” Justice Gill observed: “There is no evidence on record of the whereabouts of Hawara on August 31, 1995, (the assassination day) and as to where he was after 2.30 pm on August 30, 1995, or where did he go. The only inference we can make is that his not being present on August 30, 1995, or August 31, 1995, anywhere near the secretariat or near Chandigarh is that he did not want to be part of execution of the assassination of the former Chief Minister.” In the judgment running into 180 pages, Justice Gill added: “It is the case of the prosecution that the conspiracy to assassinate the former CM was hatched in Pakistan between Mehal Singh, Wadhawa Singh and Hawara. “Apart from the prosecution saying so, there is no evidence on record to substantiate this. Nothing is on record as to when did Hawara go to Pakistan and when did he come back. “The case of Hawara does not fall within the parameters of the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in Machhi Singh versus State of Punjab. But we are conscious of the fact that a gruesome murder of the former Chief Minister, along with 16 others, had taken place and Hawara was the organiser of the heinous crime…. The case of Hawara is a borderline case for death sentence to be awarded.” Balwant Singh has kept his promise made to his “human bomb” friend Dilawar Singh by deciding not to defend himself in the Beant Singh assassination case. The verdict in the case could have been different had Balwant Singh defended himself. But his three confessional statements and no evidence in his favour prevented the Punjab and Haryana High Court from having “a second thought” on the death sentence awarded to him by the trial court. Apparently, Balwant Singh wanted the high court to order his hanging, as just before the assassination he had promised Dilawar Singh that he would not defend himself. But this is just one bizarre fact of the intriguing tale. You may dismiss it as “too strange to be true”, but for deciding who would become the human bomb for eliminating the then Chief Minister, Dilawar Singh and Balwant Singh flipped a coin. Dilawar Singh won the fatal toss and agreed to lose his life. Balwant Singh then tied explosives around Dilawar. Before triggering off the blast, he asked co-conspirator Balwant Singh to confess his hand, which he has done in less than four years after the assassination. The “perfectly planned” operation went kaput after the conspirators failed to retrieve the car. It could have gone unnoticed, but for fate and strange hand of nature. Soon after the blast, two cops on duty felt the urge to smoke away from the public glare. In their anxiety, they hopped into an open Ambassador car. Little did they know it was the one used by the assassins. They discovered that the interiors of the car were grey, while the exterior was white. Curious, they opened the glove compartment and found bits of evidence inside. Later, they came to know the car was used to reach the spot. While the assassins managed to get the vehicle painted “Franko white” for matching the colour of government-owned cars to make access to the secretariat easy, the moisture in the air due to rains prevented them from getting the car touched from inside. This is not all. Talk to the investigators, witnesses and even assassins; and they tell you strange tales of intrigue, conspiracy and coincidences, which even a master of macabre could not weave so dexterously. Some of the stories are not part of the court record, but have been gathered during the trial covered over a period spanning three years. Soon after the car’s discovery, the investigators launched a massive search for the number plate painter. The lines drawn with thread dipped in blue (neel) for aligning the letters and digits on the plate indicated that it had been painted freshly. The search took them to Mohali. In the meantime, car painter-cum-prime witness Surinder Sharma saw the snaps of the vehicle flashed in all newspapers. Apprehensive, he was still contemplating future course of action when a cop arrived for the replacement of his bike’s clutch wire. His presence made him jittery. Thinking that the cops had discovered the truth, he spoke out everything.
  5. when our forefathers left panjab to come here, there was a very big difference in farming. i would be so bold as to say that when my grandfather came here in 1968, no-one in panjab probably had a tractor, whereas here they were milking by machine. the difference in methods would have been too great for them to make anymoney out of it. or it could have something to do with the shitty weather.
  6. Firstly I never said it was Guru Gobind SIngh who introduced the maryada of jhatka in the Panth. Why would anyone is isnt amritdhari even think about eating or not eating meat, since this maryada applies to amritdharis? And as for the lowering of spirituality, that is just bullshit. Ive havent eaten meat for 3 years and have not noticed one bit of my spiritulaity getting higher, or getting any lower in the 14 years before that when i did eat meat. that is just bullshit that the likes of radhaswamis peddle to guillible fools. In sau sakhi, there is a sakhi about how a group of choohre come to Guru obind SIngh Ji ,and beg for Sikhi di daat. In the updesh to them, guru ji says take amrit, and dont eat halal, eat jhatka. He doesnt say anything about going hunting.
  7. i think that at the mo 3 channels are enough, as the progs are getting repetitive on the new 2 channels. But this is to be expected for the first few weeks, but when the quality gets better, im sure all 3 will do good. SC , i think is now doing some quality stuff. the highlighting of the 84 events and the excellent work of the Sikh Federation recently shown, are really good stuff.
  8. they came mainly to fill the shortfall in manual labour dalsingh ji. whereas the sikhs who went to the US, went to set up their own businesses etc. manysikh farmers in the US in Yuba City i think.
  9. i tell you summat Shaheediyan bro, when that prog came on, i kept thinking i can hear Ustaad Ji, but never saw him once. Then i played it again as i always recorded them, and saw his arm coming into shot every now and again. I thought that was so selfish of SC, so I started a thread on Sikh Sangat, to see if anyone else had seen (or not seen) what I had. I was surprised that so many people saw SC blatant disregard for kirtaniye. Sad.
  10. How did you get into a convo with your grandma about killing pigs? the thing is that we cant really verify much, if any food that we eat in the uk, such as atta or sabzi. We dont know if the farmers son who helped grow them is taking drugs or tobacco etc. Or the sprays that kill thousands of God's innocent creatures just so we can eat some roti. Or if the people at the Mandi smoke or whatever. The only way you will ever verify your own food is if you go thru the whole process of plant, nurturing and harvesting. End of.
  11. i think that SIkhTV will be more willing to tackle issues currently affecting panth, also SC goes someway to do this as well thru the excellent sewa of the Sikh Federation. Also SIkh TV is doing something that i love, that is parchar of Gurmat Sangeet via Raj Acadmey. SC from what i heard took RA for a ride.
  12. true, but the veggie warriors wont let it rest.
  13. best to stick to pork, that way you know it wont be halal.
  14. My Sangeet Guru, Ustad Ranbir Singh, once told of how a very popular panjabi song " mere mehboob aaya hai" was applied to very prevalent reet in classical hindustani raag, which made the song so appealing. Prof, when he came to Wednesfield Gurdwara said that many reets were based on folk raags.
  15. True. hopefully the new channels will attempt to identify and create a tolerance based approach to diversity in Sikh Panth.
  16. What i have bolded is not what is written, those words you have added yourself. Guru Ji is not giving a list of things that have to be done in order like steps. Dont make that mistake that there is some kind of step by step process for a sikh to lead to performiong jhatka or eating meat. Going hunting is not a pre-requisite for eating meat and never has been. That going hunting is not an order for Sikhs but advice for martial prowess. Nothing more. And excuse me but who were the Sikhs that made up the Dal? They were all regular Sikhs. This notion that only those who wield swords are warriors or some kind of special sikhs is rubbish. Hold on Ji, Guru Ji did not allow this tradition to start within his army, HE started it. Jhatka started by Guru Ji themselves were continued by his SIkhs. It is prepostorous to assume that any SIkhs started Jhatka traditions and Guru Ji's allowed it to happen. At no time has Guru ever said that it is not for civilians to eat. Guru Ji has never differentiaitd between SIkhs.
  17. yes, maybe someone who is conversant with Dal Khalsa Maryada will know more, but this is what ive read. what does navratri actually mean? new something?
  18. singh sabhias are no jainis bro. they have no probs with meat, as per Akal Takht Sahib resolution. But you're right about our demonisation by our brahman sikh types, (inc my rents) who think that anyone is who isnt veg is going straight to hell. Have any of you heard of the Jhatka Convention held by the Singh Sabha in the 1940s?
  19. i think that if CDV is done after sunset, it has to be repeated thru-out the night until sunrise. so i would look further into this b4 doing it.
  20. what can your ancestors do for you when they are dead? nothing. and the King would have to be alive wouldnt he? Who would offer respects to a deceased King for belessings and happiness. I took part in a shraad in our family, and it was just so riduculous, and my mom was loving it, thinking that it was real and stuff. MENTAL! We dont know where our ancestors have gone to, we only know that they will NOT return to this world in the same body that they left.
  21. ISnt every Sikh a soldier of the Guru? Do you have to holding a weapon to be a soldier? See for me Khalsa is a saint-soldier or the combination of all 4 castes, and as such there is no need to say that I as a Khalsa only need to uphold the Brahman(Saintly) or Kshatriya(Warrior) lifestyle. There is no need to limit yourself to the ancient practise of one Varan. Should this eating in restaurants shops etc include non-veg food as well, cos those preparing the food could be users of tobacco etc, and you would not know this when eating in their restaurant, veg or non-veg food. Did Guru Nanak ask the prince how he killed the deer befor etaking it to make Mahaprasad at Kurukshetra?
  22. what is navratri and when are they?
  23. would any recordings have been made of almast?
  24. the elements that are viewed thru vedantic glasses, are these the same views of Gurmat? ie is the vedantic view of sachkhand the same as gurmat?
  25. balochistan tried to remain semi-independent in 1947, but they were crushed by the Pak army over the next 2 years. They been kinda quiet since. Sind tried the same thing in the late 60/early 70s but met the same fate as the Balochis.
