Alberuni's Account Of Panjab

Recommended Posts

I have heard that someone named Alberuni wrote about the Panjab (this was long before the birth of Guru Nanak Dev ji). Has anyone read this? Can you share your knowledge on the topic?

I have searched and not been able to find the account online. Can anyone also help source it?

Thanks in advance.

Fateh!

His book on India is called Kitab al-Hind. A good translation is Alberuni's India translated by Dr Edward C. Sachau. It's a pretty old translation though, and there are probably newer ones available.

Edit: You can find both volumes online for free here:

Just click on the Colombia links.

I read a translation years ago. I can't remember much specifics but that Alberuni basically described the natives of India in ways that aren't too surprising i.e. mentioning caste etc.
