I dont think there is any case of death of kirtan. On the contrary I see a revival amongst Sikhs wanting to learn the traditional arts of kirtan, especially in the west

I see this too, especially in canada. We have raag darbars and people trying to learn raag kirtan here as well.

Why has the sitar been abandoned?

Sitar was never part of Gurmat Sangeet.

The akjs were real popular about 20 years ago but they are dying down

Yeah i think that the AKJ's came up on the influence of Sufiana that rose up around 20 odd years ago, when everyone started to listen to Nusrat FAK. AKJ was the closest we got to that and I used to listen to it as well. Until I discovered what raag was and Gurmat Sangeet, thanks to Prof Surinder Singh, and Harjinder Singh Lalli.
