Grooming gang member who took teen to Yorkshire beauty spots to abuse her walks free

Sayeed Hafeez abused the girl, who had also been abused by other men

A grooming gang member who was first arrested seven years ago has finally been sentenced - but has walked free from court.

Sayeed Hafeez was 23 when he took a 15-year-old girl to two beauty spots in West Yorkshire and had sexual activity with her. Bradford Crown Court heard the girl had already been groomed and abused by a number of other men who have previously been sentenced.

His Honour Judge Anthony Hatton said there was no evidence to suggest the girl had been "traded" to Hafeez, who is now 36, and it is not clear how they came to know each other. He said Hafeez had had sexual activity with the teenager at Cliff Castle and St Ives.

Prosecutor Katherine Robinson said Hafeez was due to stand accused of two counts of rape but had pleaded guilty at trial to two counts of sexual activity with a child. He had been arrested in 2016 and was standing trial in October 2021 with his co-defendants when he was severed from it due to him allegedly developing Covid-19.

Ms Robinson said the teenager had had a "troubled" childhood which included her parents splitting up and her brother's death. The barrister said: "She was drinking heavily and was meeting up with a range of boys and men. She described sexual activity with a number of these men, often oral and often taking place outdoors or in remote locations.

court heard Hafeez - who is supported by his family - had suffered the loss of two of his brothers and struggles with his mental health. Ms Turner said: "He has been subject to very stringent conditions. He was arrested back in 2016 and has had to live with that for seven years or so. He is managing his mental health issues."

Judge Hatton handed Hafeez a sentence of two years suspended for two years. He said the offences he had committed had taken place between April 2009 and March 2010 and said: "The victim was a young woman who had a difficult young life. She had all of the associated difficulties of a woman growing into her teen years...

Mitigating Taryn Turner told the court a pre-sentence report had been carried out and "what happened to the victim in this case is appalling." She said Hafeez is now a mature man. The barrister said: "He went through the anxiety of the trial in October 2021. He had to wait a year before this matter came to be listed again. He could, of course, have strung it out further and he knows what may have happened."

Ms Turner said the point of an age gap means more with younger people than it does in later life. She said: "It's not an extraordinary difference in age." She added the girl was "mature" at 15, and a photograph of Hafeez at the time seems to "reveal he was a much younger man still in college so perhaps the disparity in age is not so great as may be thought at first."

Hafeez was ordered to complete up to 43 days of a sex offenders' treatment programme, 55 rehabilitation activity requirement days and nine months of an alcohol treatment programme.

Disgusting how they allow groomers to make excuses and give them the freedom to go on and do the same again

A SUPERMARKET security guard has been jailed for 13 years for raping an underage girl in his car and then forcing her to write a letter asking the police to drop the case.

Sajid Janjua, 37, was convicted by a jury at Bradford Crown Court earlier this month of raping the girl on a single occasion, sexual activity with the child, witness intimidation and perverting the course of justice.

Janjua, whose address was given as HMP Leeds, forced her to have sex with him in the back of his car in a layby on the edge of Bradford.

Janjua had been arrested and was on bail when he followed the girl and her mother in their car. He shouted through the open window of his vehicle: “End all this now. I could be jailed for ten to 15 years for this.”

Janjua also dictated a letter to the girl saying she had never been raped and that he had believed her to be 16 or 17. It was intended to be sent to the police but it was never received.

Judge Gibson said the offending had a significant impact on the girl who was particularly vulnerable and had been groomed by Janjua who gave her presents.

There was a degree of planning by taking her to an isolated spot to abuse her and a significant disparity in age.

He had then made her write the letter at a stressful and confusing time for her.

So I was just thinking of Jhatka just now...

Founder Deepa Singh said the grooming issue is 'an epidemic that has plagued the Sikh community for decades, where Sikh females are groomed and sexually exploited.' The organisation is well known for their activism work and has previously created movies, music, CD's, documentaries, reports and magazines to raise awareness on the targeting of Sikh females.

This year for the first time the group worked on an exhibition and display which was created by various artists, researchers, and survivors who have been supported by the Sikh Youth UK team.

The team has been engaging with many Sikhs across the UK to help households overcome misconceptions of issues like grooming and exploitation. Deepa Singh said: "We have supported countless survivors and their families throughout the years and continue to do this day to day...........

He added: "It's so bad that some of the families have started blaming the groomed woman. Have we become that weak? that we put the blame on the victim rather than the perpetrator? This happens because unfortunately many people still don't understand the process of grooming and this is why the work we do is so important, it is vital we raise awareness, so that people understand what is happening and are able to spot the signs of grooming.

"We have been touring gurdwaras across the UK to do this and we are so grateful to have seen so much sangat (people) attend our speeches and come see our exhibition, so thank you so much to you all."

Did you post this on SS? You'd get a wider audience for it there, especially females who need the information.

You can post it yourself mate. It's practically pointless to post it here, because it's mostly blokes, and informed ones at that????

Plenty of non members who read these forums.
Not like SS is very active nowadays

I hear you, but don't agree.

Posting it wider is a good idea, just on the off chance someone strays on the other forum one day and encounters such content and it actually saves them or people they know from being groomed.

If it's not active these days, it might become so again, and even then, just someone searching could be helped with the info. It also shows how people in our community aren't just passive in the face of targeted grooming, and that some media outside of Sikh media is also acknowledging what is going on.  To some people (sadly) this sort of indirect outside validation of what is happening/has happened is important - so important that they wouldn't believe it if it just came from Sikh sources.

SAS , BOS and Singhunit all used to post on SS, and along with SYUK they should do again.

  • Due to West Yorkshire police pressuring local Gurdwara commitee in Leeds our talk which was scheduled for tomorrow at chapel town Gurdwra will be postponed and rescheduled a big apology to all those families and students who reached out to meet us tomorrow at the talk we will be keeping you updated with another day and time really soon but we whole heartedly apologise about tomorrows talk as it won’t be going ahead.

Please note other Gurdwara committees this week were approached by the authorities and still stood shoulder to shoulder with us to make sure the parchar continues as they have ongoing issues in there area and priority is to support the Sangata.
As you can see they have continuously attempted to silence us and the parchar and message we deliver however this is just there government agenda attempting to destabilise or stop momentum and support, however the bloom review and changing nature of Sikh activism 2 Offical government reports clearly target the grooming parchar we do but Guru Sahib Kirpa we will be back in Yorkshire real soon and again whole heartedly apologise to all the sangata for the last minute cancellation.

So the police think it’s okay to stop us from doing parchar and helping our sisters out when the police themselves aren’t doing anything then these situations keep reoccurring?!!

  • The Gurdwara committee should have invited West Yorkshire Police to also attend the talk to learn from the historic and live cases themselves and its impact on victims and wider Sikh community. Effective police-community engagement should be about 2 way conversations too.

  • Slightly confused as to how police can dictate who speaks on our stages? Do they threaten when tadhi jathas or other jathas go on stage to discuss panthic issues or talk about 84? Have the gurdwaras stopped booking these talks? What would the police do exactly? It’s a private event? Do they rock up at freshers weeks or unis when your delivering such events? How on earth have they managed to dictate to a Gurdwara Sahib? Freedom of Speech inside our own territory is completely being exploited!

It’s crazy to see how the police are putting pressure on the Gurdwara for an issue that is becoming more and more common we need to keep spreading awareness of the issues that we face

So first the police cover historic groomung gang activities and let them continue for decades and now they silence those that highlight the ongoing crimes

  • I can’t believe this, our sisters are being exploited!! Yet they’re trying to silence us?! Raising awareness is the biggest thing we can do to prevent this from recurring. The amount of lives that are distraught because of grooming is unacceptable, and we must take action for this to stop @sikhyouthuk
