Dad set to walk all the way to Stamford Bridge ahead of Chelsea v Wolves clash

Manny Singh Kang, who launched Samosa Saturdays outside Molineux, will raise cash for Dementia UK

Manny Singh Kang

A dad will walk for more than two-and-a-half days from the home ground of his beloved Wolverhampton Wanderers team to raise cash for people with dementia. Manny Singh Kang will set off from Molineux tomorrow (October 5) and amble through the streets for a massive 125 miles.

The 49-year-old will walk for about 50 hours, reaching Stamford Bridge just in time for Wolves' fixture against Chelsea on Saturday (October 8). The avid fundraiser has already raised more than £180,000 for good causes through a string of charity events.

The father-of-three said: "Wolves fans are amazing and I don't do this for praise or rewards, I just want to try and give something back. Every time I do a challenge I always tell myself it's the last one but it never is.

"This challenge is absolutely bonkers but I'm really grateful to all the support and all the love that everybody shows and that [gives me] my energy." Mr Kang started fundraising in 2017 and has raised £186,865 for charities including Dementia UK, Wolves Foundation, Birmingham Children's Hospital and the Crisis homeless charity.

He became a popular feature at Wolves home games when he launched a fundraising initiative called Samosa Saturdays in 2018. So far, 35,000 samosas have been served at Wolves matches - with all cash going to charity.

The samosas, which are handed out to anyone who donates, have even been purchased by footballers Ruben Neves and Conor Coady. The Dementia UK regional volunteer ambassador said: "We decided to do a bucket collection outside the ground for Dementia UK but we just felt a bit awkward asking for money.

"Being Sikh and following my faith, giving is really important but so is feeding people, so we came up with Samosa Saturday. Samosa Saturday connects people from all walks of life and all different communities and it's just brilliant.

"I'm sort of on a bit of a rollercoaster when I'm watching it all happen in front of me. People will give me a lot of praise but there's a huge team behind me of my family - my wife, my kids and my parents, and all the volunteers who help me are just unbelievable."

Mr Kang has been nominated as a finalist at the Just Giving Awards 2022 for his fundraising work for Dementia UK. He has not been affected by the illness but started researching the condition four years ago.

He said: "When I first read up about dementia, I found that in 2018 it had killed more people than any other illness and I was shocked. I supported Dementia UK for one year before I became a volunteer ambassador and I've been supporting them ever since.

"The charity does so much good. They train up specialist nurses and send them out into the community, clinics and care homes.

Groundbreaking coach Johal joins Wigan first-team staff

WRITTEN BY SIMON AUSTIN — DECEMBER 4, 2022

REWIND to 2011 and Ashvir Johal was doing work experience with the ground staff at Leicester City.

“He got a role working with the ground staff to get close to sessions as he knew he wouldn’t get a role as a coach at that stage,” Leicester’s Academy Manager, Ian Cawley, tells TGG.

“Ash is a great lad who has hoovered up knowledge and experience. He was very driven from a young age to be a coach.”

Fast forward to today and the 27-year-old is first-team coach at Championship side Wigan Athletic, having been brought to the club by new boss Kolo Toure last week. The duo knew each other from Leicester City, where Toure was first-team coach under Brendan Rodgers for almost four years.

As far as TGG is aware, Johal is the only Asian coach working on a first-team staff at a Premier League or Football League club. He is also one of the youngest. Having played and coached at a grassroots club in his home city called GNG, he started going into Leicester City to get more experience.

Bhupinder Singh Gill made history in Wednesday's clash between Southampton and Nottingham Forest as he became the first Sikh to act as an assistant referee in the Premier League.

Sky Sports News last month broke the news of Singh Gill's historic appointment, with the PE teacher lining up alongside fellow assistant referee Marc Perry for Wednesday game at St Mary's. Thomas Bramall was the match referee for the game.

Bhupinder is the son of English league football's first turbaned referee Jarnail Singh, who took charge of more than 150 EFL games between 2004 and 2010, but none in the Premier League.

Simcoe County Rovers U-21 prospect Kabir Chahal has signed with Scottish Premiership club Kilmarnock FC, where he’ll play with the reserves as he fights to carve out a spot on the first team.

Chahal, who holds Canadian and English passports, had been training with the reserve squad of the East Ayrshire side following an earlier trial stint with a team in the English Championship. Now handed his first professional contract through the reserve team, the move to Kilmarnock comes as a promising step for the youngster.

Stamford Bridge became the first Premier League stadium to hold an Open Iftar event as Chelsea opened their doors to the local community on Sunday evening, with hundreds gathering to break their fast pitch side.

Open Iftar - the UK’s largest community event during Ramadan, enables people to gather and do Iftar - the meal to break the fast - together, as well as providing a safe space for mutual dialogue and engagement.

Paul Canoville, the first black player to play for Chelsea, was a guest speaker at the event.

‘It means everything to me seeing that the community is together. That’s what football is all about - bringing people together,’ said Canoville, who played 103 games in a five-year period between 1981 and 1986.

‘I didn’t know what to expect but it was an experience I’ve never come across and definitely one I’d like to do again.

'I’m proud and honoured to be invited and asked to speak today by the club.’

Members of the local community in Fulham, as well as supporters and school students were invited to attend, along with Chelsea FC staff.

Daniel Finkelstein OBE, member of the House of Lords, Chelsea fan and Chair of the Chelsea Foundation also spoke at the event.

‘For us, Chelsea is a community and this is a symbol of our love and respect for everyone who’s a part of that.

'When we say we’re the Pride of London, that’s a wider community that stretches across all the diversity of our communities and at Chelsea, we wanted to demonstrate that. This is the most concrete expression of that,’ said Finkelstein.

‘It’s also fascinating and moving for everyone who’s part of the club to learn more about other fans and what they do.

'A football club understands spirituality, tradition and heritage - it’s part of what every football club is. And this is a celebration of that,’ he added.

The event was hailed a show of 'love and respect' for other cultures and a celebration of diversity

Chelsea’s current squad includes an array of Muslim players including the likes of Wesley Fofana, N’Golo Kante, Hakim Ziyech and Malang Sarr.

Just last week, it was revealed that match officials in the Premier League and EFL have been informed by PGMOL to pause matches for Muslim players to break their fast, when there is a natural stoppage in play.

Open Iftar plan to hold similar events at Brighton (March 27), QPR (March 30), Aston Villa (April 5) and Wembley (April 15) over the rest of Ramadan.

Their project is run in collaboration with the Ramadan Tent Project, a charity established in 2013 with the mission of bringing communities together and developing the understanding of Ramadan.

Had a muslim friend, my best one, die in a suspicous car crash. Has me feeling mixed emotions about islam. Angry because her ex husband and potential murderer is a muslim, guilty because of my emotions about her belief, while praying for her Sanjog and Mukte and wanting to respect Muslims as Gurbani shows.

She was most definitely a Good Muslim who without hearing, demonstrated Gurbani.

Realizing that while posting this is of some comfort.

Hearing islam debated and being familiar with history makes it hard to believe they are in a good place, but I pray my friend is. She's worthy of that Kirpa ...in my flawed eyes at least...and how much more loving and merciful is Vaheguru Akal Purakh?

Sangat Ji. Please pray for Margarita, I was hoping she'd become a Sikh one day and spoke of her before.

She did not survive islam I fear.
