Is this true or is it mistranslated?

It is quite true that one has to selflessly serve one's parents, as it is through them we have got this precious and priceless present human birth to also serve our beloved Waheguru who as per Bani is also our true Father, Mother and Sustainer.

Serving one's parents does not necessary has to be in conflict with our meditative practices.

In this respect, Guru Sahiban made it clear: aath paher  jaapay Har Naao.

By serving one's parents, one creates shubh karam at most, and for that one has to come back and get the fruits of that karam.

But sangat jee, it is ONLY by meditating on His sacred Name, that all karmas whether good or bad are erased, and thus one gets freed from the unendable cycle of births and deaths, to finally merge in Waheguru and become one with Him.

Such is the beant wadeeayee of Waheguru Akal Purukh.

So, everything at its own place and time, one thing should not be an excuse to neglect our main purpose of life, which is to get freed for ever and become one with Him, by the repetition of His sacred Name.

I agree Veer Ji. That it is excellent Karam to do it. I don't have time to find the Gurbani but I will, but the Guru Granth Sahib Ji also tells parents not to teach their children to do so, and in fact calls it evil. I don't know if anyone else here was a neglected retirement baby, but when you are one, it makes total sense.

Good reply Bro,

and I do agree totally with what you say, but Bro, the thing is the question of parents teaching to serve them does not even arise, nor it is in the sense that the O.P has formulated the question, because that would be a selfish motive from the parents side ...

As far as I see,  the question of this thread, which by the way is quite a meaningful question, it is asking if one should stop meditating on Him, if one has to serve or do seva of one´s parents.

As parents, their priority should be to inculcate love for the Lotus Feet of the Lord Waheguru in their children right from childhood.

You see, when a child is born, is the most tender and weak being, and there the parents act as guardians and sustainers of their child at all times and conditions, in a way, they are the form of god for that child,  from whom the child gets, love, care, protection  and nourishment.

It is so sad, that when parents give their life for their children since they were born, those very children, when grown up, do not respect their parents and shamelessly leave them to an nursing home .... it is a most heartbreaking scene....

Then coming to the children do seva of their parents, it is something very noble, and it has to be done in a nishkam manner or selfless attitude; the praises of the love and care of the parents for their children can never be expressed fully, and can never ever be repayable back.

God is in all beings, and so one has to be kind and helpful to all beings selflessly, it is all about being nishkam seva as advised in Gurmat, for being selfless brings us closer to the Divine and be receptive to His infinite Grace.

Gurdwaras, langar and so many sevas are carried out humbly by our sikh brothers, whenever and wherever humanity is in need of help.

This is a picture of divine love in action at human form, thankd to the high teachings of Guru Sahiban and Bhagat Jan.

And while we may have a duty towards our earthly parents, we must not forget or neglect our duty of seva and bhakti towards our heavenly Father Waheguru Akal Purukh; for when nobody will be there after leaving these mayavee planes, He is always there for us since Aad Jugaad.

So, do we not owe Him that bit, if not more, of that our love and devotion at His Lotus Feet?

I agree we should always seek to stay enshrined at Satguru's Charan. Then come to rest there permanently.

But the christian concept of honoring thy mother and father has been perverted in a way to condone brutality. And we have a lot of their concepts tainting ours.

Furthermore through Ithias we've seen a multitude of instances where Gursikhs, and the Guru Sahiban have left their families, parents etc for that exact purpose.

Then we have all the Guru Granth Sahib Ji statements about flamingos, and being detached, but still living Gristhe Jeevan and a life of Seva. And now we've come back I think more to your mindset of both, which I agree with.

But not all parents can be dealt with healthily by their offspring they failed or abused.

And Dasam Granth being controversial. Almost impossible to get people to accept. And cp being the most controversial part of it. It seems odd to ignore the greater thema painted in Guru Granth Sahib Ji, and sort of myopically focus on something in cp.

And I don't think their own statement at the end is correct.

And I am a huge proponent of no old folks homes, large families, communities, with bungas for their elders is what I recommend for those who don't simply live in house with the younger generations.

But if I were to follow the advice, combined with their interpretation in my personal situation it would destory me, it would be a second millstone around my neck. I've given my mother evey chance to get with the program, my sister I care for too, and they're both selfish, liars, one abusive, the other neglectful, victim mentalities that have sucked the life out of me. So for me, drowning while immersing in the Gurus Sikhi with one abusive millstone for the sake of her child mainly is all I can handle. And even that has me pressed to my limits. Even in that realm I am having to become a person I don't want to be just to maintain my boundaries and scrape a living out of my own house I fully fund. Add my mom to that I might as well shoot myself.

And so for me I need to hear about detachment from family, flamingos, things like this, serving Khalsa Paanth.

But anyone who's a wicked person, and perhaps why this is in cp, who's parents did their job, and would not be a radioactive element in the family as it is, are the lowest of the low they don't take care of their parents.

But we should be careful to present the full spectrum and remember what Gurbani was found.

And no matter how poorly my mother has done in many regards, I would give to her before anyone, but we're talking having an entire nursing staff or something. Or it would take a whole Bunga. And while I swim as hard as I can, and have been to materialize it for her and other, anyone who would benefit is actually a lazy, selfish, and disloyal person.

So at this point while studying Sikhi under stress, I'm just trying to cope with inflation, abuse, etc and make sure my Godson who's being raised to hate me by his narcicisst mother has what he needs.

Really I think the attack on our family unit by the imperials, the males especially, is having a large impact.

A lot of men just use abuse and leave a mess behind. Those of us that don't have a high chance of being taken for granted, used, abused, neglected, disrespected, slandered, undermined in our own houses and abandoned after a life of service.

And so we must be willing to abandone our families to serve Guru Ji, and serve Guru Ji by seeing to the family of those that love and serve Guru Ji, and perhaps if we do this, elders like yourself will be venerated as a treasure and maintained as an asset to the Paanth and. The Family if not their families.

But colonialized, western mindset will not permit this.

And if we carry wicked family with us, they must defer to Khalsa rule.

And with all the information and energy and training behind me I'm hamstrung by Kalyug temporarily and feel like all I can do is Jaap Naam, study some Gurbani Gurmat, and pull up on the yoke hard as I can to arrest the dive.

But it pains me bro that I can't be there for you, your family isn't more so, and the Paanth isn't more so.

I think people need to look at the whole chariter, and then contextualise it within the greater work to get a decent grasp of it. It is easy to quote small sections and misinterpret.

I don't think Bindra's translation is top quality either. @paapiman I'm surprised you never posted the original Gurmukhi text above?

Generally speaking, the interpretation above makes sense. A devout Sikh must serve his parents.

Most likely, in Vaaran (of Bhai Gurdas jee), it states that a person who abandons his old parents is like a murderer.

I have to say, this chariter is very elaborate and detailed (more than many if not all that precede it). The early part has a lot of advait concepts bound to it.

The bit quoted in the OP seems to refer to a fake yogi's sermon to a raja who had decided to relinquish his raj (and was now living in a temple in a jungle with his rani).  The raja did this because of previous discussions with a yogi (the early part of the chariter).

There's a lot that could be said about this chariter. In the end the raja is convinced (or tricked) to return to his raj and rule by day and do his bhagti in the evening.

In this one, the role of the women isn't black and white, and to me (with a preliminary reading) it looks the rani is being commended for returning her husband to his ruling and family duties/responsibilities, without breaking him away from his bhagti practices? It's almost as if the rani helps bring out the most out of the raja?

SSA brother Gurjantgnostic.

I am afraid that when something is written and not said the same to someone, things get mixed,  and sometimes the point of view expressed is not taken as its initial purpose, and then instead to get clarity, it is seen as something totally the opposite, that too when it shouldn't be so.

I have read your posts usually regularly, and you do have my respect as I see you most of the time fair and impartial in those posts.

I do not want to continue writing or answering you in order to make the situation senseless, so better I put my foot down rather then go on discussing.

I am sure if we had a conversation face to face, the so called differences would not exist, because  i know you are fair and so am I.

Let's leave things as they are and continue having positive vibes, at least I think so.

Only one more thing, from your posts above,  I feel you have some emotional wounds, so just keep away from the negative /narcissistic people, whosoever they may be, in order to recover peace and tranquility as soon possible for the sake of health.

People now and then will try to provoke with their ego, their ignorance, their bullying attitude, but, how wisely we react to them, not giving them what they want, is more important to safeguard our peace of mind.

Best of luck bro.

SSA.

Veer ji, I think, on the subject of parents, we also need to be truthful and realistic. Not all parents are paternalistic or maternalistic nurturers. When I worked as a teacher and had to deal with some troubled teenagers, some of the things some parents have done was shocking and disgusting (like sexual abuse). Some parents can be indifferent, cruel and neglectful to their own weak and vulnerable children, getting off on tormenting them, or psychologically abusing them. So it's not black and white, although I do agree that good parents being abandoned by their ingrate children is tragic.

@all

Those of us who are blessed with even basic Gurmukhi skills and can use a dictionary will be aware of translations issues.

I noticed translations of Dasam Granth seem especially lacking. Please bear this in mind when reading these translations.

This seems wrongly interpreted, and totally without its given context:
