in order to increase flexibility, how often should u stretch? how long should stretches be held for? & is it possible to increase flexibility while increasing strength or stamina... or is it better to focus on one aspect then another?

stretches should be held for a minimum of 30 seconds each, often done in repitition, i.e. left hamstring, right hamstring, left hamstring, right hamstring etc.

yes you can increase strength whilst increasing flexability. Strength is increased by providing an increasing stimulus to the muscle, be it weight training, isometric/plyometric etc... but don't be expecting huge strength increases if you are not eating enough calories.

If u warm up n stretch in the morning, u should have most of ur flexibility for the whole day.

start with dynamic stretches (like leg/arm swings), and then move onto ur statics.

Listen to your body, initially u will experience some soreness, but eventually u should be able to stretch every morning and see a general improvement in ur flexibility over time.

and Rakash Singh is right, the stronger a muscle is, the better it theoretically should stretch. Stretch after a workout as part of your cooldown, u'll be surprised at the results.

Read 'Stretching Scientifically' . Need to read it a couple of times as it as a very loose structure. By an East German trainer. He describes different forms of flexibility: ballistic (swinging your legs higher), static (being able to force yourself into a stretch ie. doing the splits on the floor and dynamic(?) (being able to slowly raise your leg up inthe air using its own strength).

He goes onto state the different types of flexibility required for different sports. Also that some forms of flexiblility/stretching will actually hinder your sports performance - something that is said by Nihang Nidar Singh in his Sanjam Kiriya classes.

Also being bought up as a veggie helps with natural suppleness, as stated by Master Leepo 7th Dan JuJitsu! (Something to remember when you next take birth - if you're a meat eater.)

Good advice there,

Almost everyone can benefit from static stretching
