IS THERE A COW IN YOUR LIFE THAT IS KEEPING YOU MISERABLE?
 
Once upon a time,  in a faraway land, there lived a Chinese wise man and his disciple. One day during their travels, they saw a hut in the distance. As they approached it, they realized that it was occupied, in spite of its extremely poor appearance.
In that desolate place where there were no crops and no trees, a man lived with his wife, three young children and a thin, tired cow. Since they were hungry and thirsty, the wise man and his disciple stopped for a few hours and were well received.  At one point, the wise man asked:
“This is a very poor place, far away from anything. How do you survive?”
“You see that cow? That’s what keeps us going,” said the head of the family. “She gives us milk, some of it we drink and some we turn into cheese. When there is extra, we go into the city and exchange the milk and cheese for other types of food. That’s how we survive.”
The wise man thanked them for their hospitality and left. When he reached the first bend in the road, he said to his disciple:
“Go back, get the cow, take her to the cliff in front of us, and push her off.” The disciple could not believe what he was hearing.
“I cannot do that, master! How can you be so ungrateful? The cow is all they have. If I throw it off the cliff, they will have no way of surviving. Without the cow, they will all die!”
The wise man, an elderly Chinese man, took a deep breath and repeated the order:“Go ahead. Push the cow off the cliff.”
Though outraged at what he was being asked to do, the disciple had to obey his master. He returned to the hut and quietly led the animal to the edge of the cliff and pushed. The cow fell down the cliff and died.
As the years passed by, remorse for what he had done never left the disciple. One spring day, the guilt became too much to bear and he left the wise man and returned to that little shack. He wanted to find out what had happened to that family, to help them out, apologize, or somehow make amends. Upon rounding a turn in the road, he could not believe what his eyes were showing him. In place of the poor shack, there was a beautiful house with trees all around, a swimming pool, several cars in the garage, a satellite dish, and more. Three good-looking teenagers and their parents were celebrating their first million dollars.
The heart of the disciple froze. What could have happened to the family? Without a doubt, they must have been starving to death and forced to sell their land and leave. At that moment, the disciple thought they must all be begging on the street corners of some city. He approached the house and asked a man that was passing by, about the whereabouts of the family that had lived there several years before.
“You are looking at it,” said the man, pointing to the people gathered around the barbecue. Unable to believe what he was hearing, the disciple walked through the gate and took a few steps closer to the pool where he recognized the man from several years before, only now he was strong and confident, the woman was happy, and the children were now good looking teenagers. He was dumbfounded, and went over to the man and asked:
“What happened? I was here with my teacher a few years ago and this was a miserable place. There was nothing. What did you do to improve your lives in such a short time?”
The man looked at the disciple, and replied with a smile:
“We had a cow that kept us alive. She was all we had. But one day she fell down the cliff and died. To survive, we had to start doing other things, develop skills we didn’t even know we had. And so, because we were forced to come up with new ways of doing things, we are now much better off than before.”
'WHO OR WHAT IS THAT ‘COW’ IN YOUR LIFE THAT YOU NEED TO PUSH OFF THE CLIFF?' Many a time, we have let our dependence on certain people, things or situation, create a comfort zone and limit us from achieving greater things. Personally, I am very ‘cautious’ in nature and it takes me a lot to let go and climb to another level. You may feel terrible at first, but in the end, it will all be worth it.
From the conversation in the end, the man says that they had to develop skills and do other things when their only ‘source of survival was dead’. At times we need to lose that job to realize that we can actually do well in business. Sometimes that business needs to fail, to realize that we can do well in other things. Sometimes a situation in our lives may have to fail for us to realize that we deserve and can get better.
Is there a cow in your life that is keeping you miserable? If so, push that cow down the cliff and please do not be tempted to go after it!

Regarding your question which is the beautiful topic of this present thread, only that much can be said that there is some confusion amongst many  of our sikh brothers and sisters, for they literally take Nam as name. 
The names that come under the format of writing, reading or spoken, such as Waheguru, Satnam, Parbrahm Parmeshwar, Parmatma in our case as sikhs; refer to that Supreme and changeless eternal Truth, which is also a Supraconcious Energy ,  Creative Power, which is in constant reverberation, and is subtle and formless.
This constant reverberation,produces in a way to say, infinite waves, containing full energy in terms of sounds and lights.  This is known as Anhad Naad, Shabad, Amrit Bani. But again, these words are descriptive qualities of that Primal and Conscious creative power or energy.
To this creative Power which is nameless or wordless, there is a mention to it, in Aartee or Anand Sahib, as well as in other angs of SGGS.
Thus this concept of Conscious Energy of Waheguru is acceptable and logical.
Had Nam or Shabad been somehing limited to reading, writing, or spoken, as we all know, it could have never ever created any creations.
Just let us think a little bit, when He  was all alone by Himself since Aad Jugaad, there was nothing such as a paper or pencil to write Him down, neither was anybody to call Him.... Then too, in which language and with which mouth?
All the verbal and written names, are just a handful of His infnite descriptive attributes, shared with us limited beings, by our beloved Guru Sahiban and Bhagat Jan.
He is ajoonee, akal, saibhang... He is Shabad, Anhad Naad.
Just as musical notes, represent particular sounds, in a similar way, His written or spoken  names, are means through a specific jugtee of Nam simran, to cleanse us, and awaken our  faculties of seeing the Jot  and the divine melodies of the Shabad Guru or call it  Anhad Nad.

Sukh dukh, amiree gareebee, janam maran, all of these transitory phases have to do with past karam only.
If you want to progress in your career, then study more, put more efforts , pay more attention in your studies....all this, will put you in favorable conditions to have success , yet the last word will be always of your karam. Anyway, whatever you do, nothing is lost, it is just a matter of time.
All the world is in pain, he may be even rich,  but it is only he who has His Name at all times, is happy here and hereafter, for he is really wealthy(spiritual wise).
Having His Name, makes the difference, for either you have it and have everything, or you have nothing, even while having everything ...

Question 8: Sachay Patshah, I have an doubt in my mind so I am confused, please clear it,  I see so many people performing so many types of devotions, each one with fasting, pilgrimages, recitations, pujas, bathing in so called holy waters, etc, so then, among all these devotions/practices, which one is accepted in the Lord´s court/darbar, or should I do all of them when such ocassions arises?
Guru Jee: listen carefully my  dear sikh, 
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਉ ਸਿਮਰਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਪਰਵਾਨ ॥
Prabh Ko Simarehi Sae Jan Paravaan ||
प्रभ कउ सिमरहि से जन परवान ॥
Only those who do simran/meditate on the Lord, they are approved in His Court.
 
Question 9:  Sachay Patshah, though you stress so much upon Nam throughout the Bani, why is it so that hardly anybody pays attention to it?
Guru Jee : That is because His name is the most precious gem, the jeevas are not to be blamed much about it, for it is not in their hands to do His Simran, because,  it is only by His hukum/grace/mercy, that, those chosen ones, meditate on Him, the rest are occupied in  doing so many other things  which are not my teachings, thus forgetting  or being blind to the Truth of Nam .

Found some  beautiful Sat Bachans from the Bani, where Guru Jee enlightens us with the essence of  Truth of Shabad or Nam.
 
Naanak, Sabadh Apaar, Thin Sabh Kishh Saariaa 
O Nanak,  the Shabad is infinite; it has arranged everything perfectly.
Raag Gauri Guru Arjan Dev
* In this verse, we can see Guru Jee is saying that the Shabad is Infinite.  And we all agree who or what is Infinte. If asked, some will say Waheguru. Some will say Akal Purukh, some will say Satnam... Though all are right, for it refers to the same highest eternal and changeless Truth.  Yet Guru jee,  here is telling us,  that Shabad is apaar, so naturally we can say, Shabad is also Waheguru, or Waheguru is Shabad in reality.
For many it is difficult to imagine or believe that Waheguru is formless, is omnipresent, is subtle .... there is an logical explanation to answer it. And the only answer is, that Waheguru/Akal Purukh/Satnam, is not something with any particular form or size, for it is an infinite Consciouss energy, with attributes well known as it is Chitful, means Omniscient; it is Param Anand, means an undesciptable ectasy, joy, happiness beyond measure, it is our origin, Parmatma. Of course this all is unimaginable for anyone of us limited human beings.
This Shabad, the creator of everything, can be heard not with our physical ears, but the attention of our souls when gathered at our third eye through gurmantar, or nam japna; this Shabad can also be seen, with the seeing capacity and capability of our soul, known as Nirat.
With correct nam japna tecnique, both of these our faculties of seeing and hearing, get purified and awakened, thus we have darshan of our beloved Waheguru and listen to His melodious voice in the form of Shabad Dhun.
Guru Jee, in this verse reveals us something very deep and beautiful, He says that Shabad has arranged everything  perfectly; which here it means, the Shabad has created everything. So naturally, it is understandable and acceptable, that Shabad, or Anhad Nad, is same as what we at our human level know as Waheguru Akal Purukh or Nam/Satnam.
The Sun is one thing which has light and heat, yet it makes it no difference, if there is someone calling it with different words or even, does not call it at all. It will continue giving light and heat.
In a similar way, it makes no difference to that Supreme Truth or Highest Level of Consciousness, whether we call it Waheguru, Satnam or Akal Purukh; for it is what it is all the time, that what is as an Infinite state of Consciouss energy, which is in constant reverberation without any striking of  any dependant objects or devices.
Even when there is no one to call Him , when Mahaparlay take place, He alone by Himself continues existing, in His Shabad dhun state(Conciouss energy)
For example, a spoon falls on the floor, it makes sound...  usually there are 2 or more objects which strike or clash, thus sound is produced ...  but that One Supreme Truth  of Shabad is such a wonderful reality, that inspite being One without any second, yet it produces Akhoot Jot and  Divine Melody thoughout the eternity of all yugas
Countless devis, devtays, shaktis, Kanas, Brahmas, Vishnus, incarnations, prophets come and go,  in countless creations, tme after time, but that Anhad Shabad, is the same all the time.
We can continue singing His glory, yet still, it is nothing of His beant wadeeayee.

first of all, you are not wrong at all from all what you have said, o.k?
So relax. Do not get tense, you see how brothers here support you....
I am not going to judge him for what he said, neither support him, for one has to be there to in which tone he said those things... Anyhow, there is a chance to see what he said in a positive way.
For example, look at him as an elder brother, wanting to get the best by a bit scolding.... sometimes we need to get a push to move in the right direction, for maybe he meant, that Gurbani is so much valuable and rich, that it is a pity, while being sikhs, yet we fail to make the most of it for ourselves spiritually ....
You see, it a good sign you get so much "rus" by listening to the Bani, of course it is by  His blessings, for  having even those sentiments.
But brother believe me also, the maximum benefit from the Bani, is by following implicitly what is said in the Bani, which is to engage oneself in His Bhakti  with utter love and devotion.
Sometimes, one is dry, it mattters not, the thing is "doing it";  automatically one will get that pyar and sharda, let us not try to analyse ourselves so much, we have to totally submit ourselves as we are, at His Lotus Feet.
For only by doing so, we can get mukti from the mayavee creation, and merge in Him, our origin.
This is all what Gurbani is about, which our beloved Guru Sahiban and Bhagat Jan, have shared His wadeeayee with us  ignorant jeevas.
