If your using a malaa you can say Waheguru three times on each bead. So you will be saying Waheguru 324 times on one round. 
The number seems high because dass is counting japs done while sitting, walking and other activities.   So the mind will always be preoccupied with simran.

I think it depends on the spirtual stage of the sikh.  I am a beginner and failed many times, love doing simran slowly while listening with my ears and could do over 2000 in an hour.
 

How do you manage 22k japs in a day ? Thats like 200 odd Malaa of 108 man keah ?

Gurdwara Mall Ji Sahib. This Gurdwara marks the spot where Rai Bullar witnessed Guru Nanak while sleeping beside a tree a large cobra shielded his head from the sun. Here Rai Bullar erected a small monument beside the tree which still stands today. Later a larger Gurdwara was built.

Bought new small wheat flour, ghee, sugar, small karahi , thaali, kaoli and thali cover and kept everything in one of the top shelves in the kitchen.  It was bit hard work because I have to clean all the kitchen , bins, oven, cupboard’s doors , kitchen door etc on Saturday evening as my husband is strictly non-veg. He cooperated by not eating/cooking any non-veg on Sundays.

Well without saying too much dass is in the same boat as you as I got my sister who brings meat in the kitchen and cooks it. But dass doesn't eat anything like that. 
 
So yes you can still read Akal Ustat at home as they're no whams superstitious with it. Dass himself has reads Bramh Kavach and many other Dasam Chandi banis but as long as you have taken Ishan bath shower it's fine with Bramh Kavach.
 
As long you are not eating non veg it's ok as I try to ignore that it gets made at my home kitchen.
