    Nihangs are mentioned as the warriors of Durga in one of the Chandi banis in Dasam Granth.  Current day nihangs use this reference to trace their history back into primordial time.

    If I remember it correctly both the Chibbar writers quote this verse in a context of the Khalsa having to destroy their enemies. Also followed by the Sagal malech karo ranghata

    Singh the above does'nt allude to "kill the non-Sikhs" as per original post.

    The second shabad has an interesting uthanka behind it regarding a Mughal commander from Lahore that went out to kill Guru Arjan. He died on the way and then Maharaj composed the shabad. The Faridkot Tika links the shabad with this incident but interprets the whole shabad in an esoteric way.

    thanks for sharing. Maybe the Gurbilas Patshahi 6 talks about the funeral - I remember it talking about the final battle between him and Maharaj - pure bir ras and chivalry

    Thanks for sharing. Beautiful.  I think there is much history to the Sodhis and Bedis that needs to be investigated further. They appear to have had tremendous influence in the pre-British period and contributed significantly to the Khalsa cause and heritage. If youve come across any book that deals with their history please let me know. I was blesssed to talk to a Sodhi from Anandpur once - he told me that there were many pothia and granths running in their family possessions for generations.

    its their cult mentality.. They claim to respect the panth maryada etc yet when they dont recognise other amritdharis as equals they show their true beliefs. Its cult mentality at its worst. Kamalroop Singh did a blog on this once talkin about how they re-initiate people who have taken amrit from taksal, akal takht etc.

    Apart from the Anup Kaur tales earlier on, this charitar is also said by anti-dasam nindaks to relate to Guru Gobind Singh himself.  They often use it to proove the CP not being Bani as “why would the Guru order the Sikhs to steal turbans from people”. It will be interesting to study it further

    amardeep got a reaction from Jageera in Why did the Gurus NOT write the katha/viakya of Guru Granth Sahib Ji?
    Pandit Tara Singh Narotam in his Gurmat Nirnay Sangreh provides some criteria and rules for how one can write teekas (chapter called Teeka Maryada). He further states that it is essential to study teekas in order to understand Gurbani, and that proper ucharan of Gurbani is dependant on understanding the arths of Gurbani. In this way, Santhia and Teekas go hand in hand. Pandit Tara Singh Narotam was the vidiya guru of Giani Gian Singh. Both were born in the 1820s

    One day, in the sangat, Bhai Dhurgaahee and Bhandaaree, and other Sikhs gave a supplication to the Master.
    “Guru’s Sikhs, reading Guru’s bani, continue to discuss it at length, someone interprets it one way and someone else another.  If you could write down the meanings or dictate an explanatory book;
    1 We would (all) understand (GurBani) with ease;
    2 All opposing opinions (arguements) would be eliminated.”
    Guru replied, “My Sikh brothers! Once this same question was asked by Sikhs to our elder, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. He gave this answer: the meanings of the words of Guru Nanak (keeper of highest wisdom), are beyond count. No one exists with the ability to give its (GurBani’s) complete meanings.  This bani is the fulfiller of all wishes.  It will give fruit (understanding, blessings) based on the Sikhs (readers) intelligence and desires (personal).  The meanings or explanatory book (on GurBani) will always remain on the tongue (mind) of the Sikhs.
    There can never be an explanatory book on these words (GurBani).  Because an explanatory book can only exist, for those words (of wisdom) which are regulated by the rules of grammar.
    In fact, the word (GurBani) is the independant and experiential form of the creator.  Just like the bashed and filtered rice ends up sparkling, in the same way, GurSikhs who endlessly discuss (GurBani) will eventually become empowered to understand the meanings (of GurBani).
    THAT IS WHY IT IS ONLY THE DEEP DISCUSSION OF GURBANI WHICH IS AUSPICIOUS / WORTHY OF RESPECT.

    According to the big Abrahamic religion there should be one scripture primarily.  Ie bible or Quran. I would argue the modern Sikh obsession in some circles with sola scriptura comes from a middle eastern perspective of what does it mean to be a religion.

    There are many handwritten manuscripts in Punjab - both in library archives and private collections. I’ve seen some really impressive collections of manuscript at private collectors, including some from the kavi darbaar. Much stuff is not published unfortunately.

    I'm not sure what happened to the other 5 sons of Kavi ji.
