  1. Gurbani works in many different ways, and on many levels, it works whether or not we understand it. I know of young children and non-Sikhs who don't understand a word but were cured of disease or had other problems solved by listening to Gurbani. Even a deaf person benefits from Gurbani and kirtan. Even the walls of the room become pure, and water becomes Amrit by listening to Gurbani. On a conscious level, then we do need to understand what Guru Ji is saying so we can implement the teachings.
  2. Sorry, I was mislead by the topic title, which is specifically about Panj Pyare. lol. Just to point out, N30, they also say that Khande Da Pahul is vital - of course, they teach jugti to all, but in essence, real kamayee starts after Amrit. I think you (or me, lol) have misunderstood the topic - Singh is asking about 5 Pyare di seva, not anything else. Guru Rakha.
  3. The one female Bhramgyani I know told me that only Singhs should do 5 Pyare seva.
  4. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa! Waheguru ji ki Fateh! What is your issue with Chaubis Avtaar?
  5. ਸਚੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ -ang 562 ਸੁਣਿ ਸਜਣ ਜੀ ਮੈਡੜੇ ਮੀਤਾ ਰਾਮ|| ਗੁਰਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੁ ਦੀਤਾ ਰਾਮ ॥ - ang 576 Everything can be obtained from my Guru, why look elsewhere? Is having faith in Gurbani = Brahmanism?
  6. Gurbani is amazing. Have had similar happen in my immediate family as well.
  7. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa! Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! The main aim of Sikhi is to become one with Waheguru, while still alive. What do you do to achieve this or is it secondary to your political goals? Everything that Guru Ji gave us is geared towards this goal, the second that we tamper with it, we've lost the game. People think Waheguru is a joke - "Lokun Ram Khilona Jana..." When the jamdhoots smack you in the head, then it'll be too late. We've already had Sikh Raj in the past and Sri Dasam Granth was part and parcel of Sikhi. You talk of freeing people's minds? That's exactly what Guru Gobind Singh Ji's bani does! It's people like you, applying Christian morality to Sikhi who are unable to talk about social issues without getting aroused who need to free your minds and stop being slaves to ignorance. You live in Canada don't you? Ironic.
  8. No, Waheguru does not regret after doing something. You have to look at the context in which this was said and not forget that it is poetry. Take a short course in interpretation of literature.
  9. 100% spot on! Try it and you'll notice the improvement in your focus during simran within days. It is very hard to be involved in politics and remain detached at the same time. Some of the arguments I see really bring home the point that we've forgotten the main purpose of Sikhi - to make use of this rare human birth, cultivate love for GUru Ji and become one with Waheguru. It's only if we keep this goal in mind that we can fight worldly battles as well as spiritual/ mental. It's clear that most of the trouble makers in the panth are Sikh because they were born into it, real love and longing for Guru Ji seems to be missing in the lot of them.
  10. When they were younger, sure. Even today, most of the younger Nihang Singhs and Singhs who do sewa at various deras etc are in good shape, but as a whole, the panth has lost its way when it comes to doing its duty in maintaining dharm and freedom not only for ourselves, but for everyone. We probably don't know what really happened, but I still don't understand why the Sikh armies just laid down their arms - physically handing them over to the British after the second Anglo-Sikh war, and never fought back again, not even a guerilla battle. There have been many Sikhs who've fought for civil liberties through the courts, e.g. the right to wear dastars in the UK etc. However, when it comes to larger issues, has anyone apart from Sant Jarnail Singh Ji seriously taken up the challenge? How many of our leaders have done ardas before Guru Sahib and not gone back on their word? These days, most of us are happy with the status quo, as long as we get food, have shelter, then who cares about anything?
  11. The documentary was great. Their ideology is twisted, but they do remind me of old school warriors. Have to say that it is impressive that they aren't just talk and no action, they actively fight for what they believe to be right. Too bad that what they believe to be right, isn't.
  12. You're taking the Hamnuman thing out of context. As for Sheikh Farid, you really have no idea about history do you? Can you tell me why you're a Sikh? What do you hope to get from Sikhi?
  13. GuptSingh, is there any proof that the current Jathedars are under the influence of politicians? Don't forget that the first complaints against Darshan came from outside India, and a heck of a lot of Sikhs support the decision to excommunicate the lying idiot. Also, 2 of the Jathedars are from outside Punjab, so how much influence would Badal have? It's no good making allegations without proof. Sant Ji also calls people who don't believe in Sri Dasam Granth 'bemukhs', nastiks and cowards. I agree.
  14. Sad but 100% true! I have nothing but respect for any immigrant who comes over, keeps true to their dharm, works hard and does well. However, having helped out at the Gurudwara meetings for new student immigrants, most of them want an easy ride and have none of the anakh, physical or spiritual presence that previous generations have had. I don't know what it is - influence of bollywood, chemicals in the food or what, but it's almost like some of them are from a complete other culture. All that matters is quick money, getting high and girls. The Gurudwaras are trying all they can to secure them jobs, by talking to local businesses etc but there is so much local labour available (also apney) that it is hard. They've got some of them to sign up to the Army, which they can if their visa is valid for over 4 years, but I don't see many of them passing the physical tests. Local families have also provided rooms to most of the kuriyaan who've come over, so the community is helping as much as they can. Not all the freshy students are as described above, obviously, but the majority are. Sad thing is they've ruined the prospects of genuine students from India who wanted to come to the UK. I'm in the UK on a student visa myself (not from India though)so I know what it's like to be a new arrival and don't have a bias against immigrants. While Punjabis send their sons and daughters abroad to live as virtual slaves, Punjab is being taken over by hard working people from other states. WTH is wrong with us?
  15. Indian (mostly Punjabi) students have grossly abused the system in recent months. Pakistani students have not. The vast majority apply to useless colleges, make up fake bank statements (or take loans to boost their bank accounts) to fool immigration and come here expecting to find work. Most of them don't really come to study. There's a huge problem in places like Southall where there isn't enough accommodation for the new arrivals. The lengths our people will go to to get out of Indian are unbelievable - many of the new students don't keep kesh 'because the agents said it would make it easier to get the visa'. That's untrue anyway, but the fact that they readily part with something that many have died for is shocking. Then there are those, who on getting a student visa, sell their services to others in Punjab by getting married to people who then come over as 'dependants'. There are guys who have had 5-6 marriages like this! The funny thing is that even though there's such a huge number of Indian students here, there are very few of them in proper universities - who usually guarantee room in halls of residence for 1st year students. Significant blame lies with the Indian govt for not cracking down on dodgy 'agents'.
  16. Just received their "Guide To Spiritual Consciousness". Amazing book! The books themselves are very well published and produced with great quality. It's unbelievable that they're free!
  17. Vadhaiyan! Find 4 other Singhs and take Guru Sahib for a ride! Ardas done in Sangat is very powerful, so I don't think there is anything wrong with going to Gurudwara to do ardas.
  18. Thanks Shaheediyan! Interestingly, quite a few people I know (mostly from India) use 'jori' to refer to tabla. So I guess Tabla used to refer to drums generally. Tabla is also used on ang 417 by Guru Nanak Dev Ji - but spelled tabela. What is used as a generic word for drums, now that tabla refers to a particular instrument?
  19. Yes it can. There's risk in every activity - walking along the road, driving your car, even sitting in your house! Don't let the politicians own your life.
  20. The whole fear of terrorist attacks on aircraft is illogical. In the US, you have a much higher chance of being killed by a drunk driver on your way to the airport than of being involved in an incident onboard the aircraft - and that's if there wasn't any security at all! Israeli style behavioural profiling is probably the best form of security - not one incident on an El-Al aircraft, and you know the nutters would love to change that. It's easy to say "they could get fake passports.... etc" but there are a host of other indicators security personnel check - even before you get to the airport. Again, the media and politicians have hyped up the threat so much that the general public no longer see erosion of personal freedoms as an issue.
  21. It's a load of bs. Which Al-Qaeda member did the Indian media speak too. Anyone who looks like a Sikh already gets more attention that others - why would terrorists want to draw attention to themselves? Which is why all the 9/11 hijackers were clean shaved, 'normal' looking men. Most INdian news media outlets including TV/ papers etc make Fox News look intelligent. They should be ashamed of themselves. The less bs like this is publicised, the better.
