As a child I remember playing at a friend's house, whose parents were Ugandan refugees (well the dad anyway). Once we happened apon his dad's pagh on a shelf whilst goofing about....... and we all took turns to try it on (I know it was wrong but we were kids). The thing was proper rock solid...and the point on the front could EASILY take out an eye...

    Memories.....

paapiman reacted to Ragmaala in Bhangra
I have been guilty myself of dancing or doing Bhangra during weddings. Now that I look back at it, it looks ridiculous & embarrassing, but nothing crazy like the ones in videos in this thread. I feel cringe , wish I can go back and erase those. Maybe it's just maturity with age, or more understanding of Gurus Updesh.
Guru ji mentions against dancing, & listening to songs/ tunes other than Gurbani.
I think for me it was the young age, the peer pressure of mixing and validation from others, the atmosphere & the sangats effect. But thank God I have come off it, and the idea of dancing now repulses me, its ridiculous.

I'm like you, I did it too. I don't feel guilt about it because I didn't know any better. Don't mistake me as someone who is some stick in the mud. It's just now the bhangra thing has gone to absurd levels amongst our community. It was also what  originally opened up our females to grooming way back when in the UK, and I'm sure this is going on in Canada too.
As we can see from the extract I posted earlier, it was originally a west Panjab thing which probably means it was a muslim practice that local Sikhs picked up from them that was subsequently adopted en masse after west Panjabi Sikh refugees came over after partition. The way it has become so wrapped up in Sikh identity today is ridiculous, even more so when we consider that muslim Panjabis  have largely rejected it. The whole industry is also a primary factor in promoting casteism and open drinking (and other nonsense) amongst apnay. If it was just kept amongst ourselves privately at weddings with some decorum I wouldn't have so many issues with it. But it isn't, and apnay and apneean routinely make a jaloose out of themselves (and by connection, the panth) through it. When I was younger, no Sikh father would ever be happy with his daughter prancing about on stages to entertain others, that's how far we've fallen because of this.  There are a thousand pathetic caricatures of apnay on the net because of this. Great share of bani btw!

If they do that on a regular basis, that makes full sense.
Jhatka Maryada and Sukha Maryada are specific to the Nihang Sikh order.
Also, we must not apply very high standards to Sehajdhari/non-Amritdhari Sikhs, when it comes to Jhatka meat and Sukha.
