  1. Could this be refering to 'kachera' and a 'kamarkasa'?
  2. Good luck on finding you Pathis?? BTW does anyone teach the santhia of Dasam Granth??
  3. When are you planning this PAth?? I hope it turns out to be a better programme than the event at Baba Sang Gurdwara a few months ago. Felt rather let down after all the hype on the web!
  4. Cheers for that TSingh. there is a pic of Sant Jaimal SIngh Ji carrying a 'charu'. Isn't that a Seva Panthi tradition? BTW: English version doesn't seem to work.
  5. Thanks for that Amardeep. For me that clarifies the whole meat issue for Sikhs. BUT what about the authenticity of the Sau Sakis as a whole? As per my understanding it has been changed alot over the centuries.
  6. ....obviously not a big deal then!!!!!??????
  7. I concur here. I remember when I started a project at uni that was based on the pub industry. I complained to the lecturer that I am at a disadvantage because I do not drink and have no knowledge of the sector. He started laughing and said that he doesn't believe that i'm a teetotaler! went on to say that EVERY sikh he knows and ALL sikh weddings his been to was like the drinks industry's national convention with booze flowing freely. Unfortunatley, (true as it may sound,) he, and most of the class, thought that to be a Sikh you had to be verging on being an alchoholic.
  8. Chatka = 18 secs Halal = 1.04 secs Don't know whether/what to read into the timings.
  9. Good job on the Muslim Councils part. Yet if this carnage occured in the UK I doubt the response would have been the same.
  10. Cheers for that . I have heard of the community in Iran. Do you have any further info on these Udasi deras in Russia and Azerbaijan? St Petersburg in North Russia?? How and why did the Udasi's go there?
  11. Ok...I get your message Morghe Sahar. LOL DSGPC = Dehli Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandak Commitee!
  12. There are many groups of Sikhs around South Asia who came into being because their forefathers settled in different parts of India many centuries back for a variety of reasons. My question is are there any groups who travelled the other way ie. Central Asia, Tibet and China, Mid-East?
  13. A while back photos were released of beadbi being done to the birs printed and stored by DSGPC. Does anyone know what came of this?? Can't seem to find much info; seems it was all hushed up!
  14. Doesn't sound promising, since I am moving there in a couple of weeks time. Argh!!!! What is 'Sorth Haal' like anyway???
  15. I have found that you will find students of Sikh Missionary College are the ones who are very liberal and lacsidasical with the usage of bindis as well as with the whole of saanthia. They usually tend to place pauses at very different places to the rest of the schools of santhia reading too. Most people think that 'aunkr' and 'sihari' are silent but as stated they are subtly prononced. For the aunkr think of saying 'Er' (as in um, er, oh etc)with an English accent. For sihari - say a short , sharp ei (almost like Hey but without the H). Thats the best I can explain by writing, in essence you do need a good teacher to sit with you.
  16. have any of you guys read the earlier pamphlets written on recycled paper by Bhagat Puran Singh? It seems all the social, environmental, ethical thoughts espoused by him are now common "scientific" knowledge praeched in the West. eg. he used to stated that every person should walk at least 8 miles a day to keep healthy. This almost tallies with what health practioners in UK are now saying ; to walk 10,000 steps per day. From what I see , Bhagat Puran Singh was a true visionary whos advice/thoughts/teachings are more valid now than at any time in the past.
  17. Not trying to be clever- like I said: serious question?? It has been many years since they passed away. did they do something special over and above other people who have died in similar tragic manners? is it simply as I think that because they wear gol-pag and wear kirpans and cholas theey are being treated as martyrs of a cause??
  18. as a yuppie, trimmed, beer-swilling Sikh, will someone write me a poem or give me all this media space when I keel over???? Or is it for certain Sikhs only?? Serious question!
  19. If janet does convert wont it prevent her from her "wardrobe Malfunction" publicity seeking schemes??
  20. Maybe its a modern thing because Sikhs did not want to use the names Bedi or Sodhi. I read on SikhSangat.com a while back that some sunday school teachers at gurdwaras discourage children from using DEV beacuase its too Hindu!!!! Wont be long before we start saying 'Bhai Sahib Guru Nanak Singh Ji' Then again the first guru is also known as Rimpoche Nanak Lama, Nanak Faqir, Baba Nanak Shah etc, etc depending on who they're followers are.
  21. To all those veggies against slaughtering delicious free-range, organic goats, worthy of being stacked in Fortnum & Mason's shelf; I have a question: what about all the tablas at ALL gurdwaras that are made of animal skins. you play the drum then go and pick up a gutka/pothi without washing hands. Or what about the first sight that strikes you when you enter a temple - that of different types of animal skin'd shoes (not to mention the stench of stinking socks and shoes)? Or how 'bout the chaur made of peacock feather or other animal hair?? Or how about the the humans being slaughtered around the world or the sikh farmers in India who pollute the crops, rivers and feilds with pesticide and fertilisers causing massive rates of cancers?? And you get outraged because of a goat pop its clogs??
  22. Ive heard rumours of the same . would you know the name/s of the shaastras??
  23. The book is called SOHAIL PRAKASH. "Sohail" being Pandit Sohail Singh Ji Nirmala; who the book is dedicated to. They were Sant Jagjit Singhs vidiya guru and taught sant ji Sanskrit and Ayurvedic medicine- getting them registered as a Vaid (desi doktor)with the Govt. It was one of the original books writen many years ago, by Sant Ji. They may have some copies at Sultanpur to give away.
