  1. i don't believe science or discussion of social ills will prevent the older generation from indulging. Only liver disease or another serious ailment will. When I was younger (pre-Sikhi), I knew about the science but ignored it b/c, like most others, I thought that it wouldn't happen to me. Luckily I got into Sikhi and away from partying so it never did happen. Anyways, I think getting them while their young, combined with other emotional type appeals, or dharmic appeals, would make the biggest difference. I have noticed that the pracharaks who have some kamai tend to be much more effective in their prachaar regarding these kinds of things. not that it hurts to try those other approaches of course. At least some would respond to those.
  2. Discrimination is unjustifiable, but it's sad that people turned bemukh against their own Guru to increase their share of the worldly power pie. Sikhs in puratan times could have avoided discrimination by converting to Christianity or to Islam. They didn't. Nuff said. No sympathy for deserters to the Guru. I do have sympathy for those sharda wale who are discriminated against and chose to not turn beymukh.
  3. religious institutions are not required to marry gay persons in canada, probably same deal in the US. I have seen a picture of gay sikhs marching in a gay pride parade before.
  4. a gay person can certainly be a sikh and i would not condemn them for it, but the idea of same sex anand karaj is abhorrent. Despite that a person can be born gay, it doesn't mean that same sex relations are ok. Just like people may feel other sorts of perversions due to past karams, perhaps even perversions that came to them from birth, but those remain unjustifiable in light of Gurmat. The energy of same sex couples is not complementary, ie, not made for each other, unlike that of a male and female.
  5. i've heard that you should always bring something. whether it's a flower, some other food, or money.
  6. burkas were not banned everywhere. The rule was that when a woman came into sangat her face should not be veiled.
  7. Taksal claims to have a copy fo Bhai Mani Singh ji's handwritten gutka sahib, upon which they base their nitnem. They also state that they have a handwritten rahit pothi written by Bhai Mani Singh ji. I would love to hear a recording of Sant Jagjit Singh ji discussing these, as I believe he has had darshan of them both.
  8. basically, foods which create a lot of acid are kaam promoting. this is b/c the acid irritates the senstive nerves down there, and then our dhian gets pulled down there. after that, in reaction, we often start having kaamic thoughts. so generally sweets, foods that are too spicy. Too many grains will also cause it, b/c we need to balance all this with alkaline foods like fruits and veggies. lack of exercise promotes it, all that energy must go somewhere... it also flushes our system. ideal diet, i have found, is high in veggies.
  9. if someone`s soul can leave the body and move on to next stage, then it is not suicide. if someone`s soul cannot do that, then it is suicide and against Gurmat, plain and simple. I`m referring here to a protest in the nature of burning oneself alive or engaging in a hunger strike. A suicide bombing would naturally be against Gurmat if one is harming innocent bystanders, regardless of their dharm. Just speaking generally here.
  10. feel free to make the info public once you find out...
  11. I think vava/wawa, is neither firmly V or firmly W. kind of like an in-between. At least, that is how it was introduced to me. I am certain of the pronounciation of Waheguru though. I think this is something Neo should ask Sant Jagjit Singh ji when he goes to India.
  12. It's with a W sound. Been told that by Sant Jagjit Singh and a giani who was former garvai of Baba Thakur Singh ji.
  13. Clubs and stuff have to stop. Hanging out with people like that will just make you want to walk away from Sikhi. I wasn't always Gursikh, so speaking from personal experience, girls respond to the confidence you have in yourself, and to your firm adherence to principles more than they do just to looks. My advice, work out. Weightlifting is great for building confidence. Dont' hang around people who make you doubt your path, even if they are outwardly supportive. Go to a uni with a Sikh society, one that actually has dharmic Sikhs in it, not just bhangra fiends. And wear a dastaar, not a patka. When a guy starts getting a beard, a patka looks really bad. I've heard Singhnis say it looks gross.
  14. i don't think the article is on any national newspaper website is it? the site here is a white supremacist website.
  15. a nap longer than 25 mins will take you into deep sleep territory. 20 mins is good for me... but i honestly feel like i need something even more. perhaps a proper yoga program to help energize me.
  16. The Vancouver Sun newspaper and one of its main reporters, Kim Bolan, have made a career out of demonizing Sikhs. The extremely negative perceptions of Sikhs on the west coast are somewhat widespread. Ridiculous stereotypes are held in the heads of many whites. It's quite shocking really, to compare B.C.'s other main newspaper, The Province, in its coverage of the Sikh community. You would think that they were talking about two different communities. That being said, there is still a general attitude of tolerance and acceptance, as well as a live and let live attitude among the younger generation. Although I feel that many are against some aspects of Sikhi, such as the external appearance, so the tolerance is superficial to some degree. Still, they don't cause trouble or harass as much as the way the older generations used to.
  17. Mod note: Alright guys... any further off topics or personal attacks like this will be deleted. Back to the topic please
  18. Confession The article is about the confession of a Hindutva leader with regards to the massacre of Muslims. He discusses how rss leaders masterminded the slaughter. For those who don't know, hindutva is a politicised hyper-aggressive version of Hinduism that views foreign religions, or domestic religions which believe they are unique, as threats. The movement is spearheaded by the RSS and related groups and is modelled on the National Socialism movement of the world war 2 era Nazis.
  19. what about adding science to the currently existing technology subforum? the two topics often go together, and even if they don't, putting the two together still makes sense.
  20. Kharkoos were accounting for themselves very well until the community made the mistake of going against the advice of a bhramgyani and some seasoned kharkoos and boycotting elections. After that a fanatical congress unleashed hell and promoted all sorts of abuses.
  21. if a man's not home and you burn down his house, despite not being murder it still is a very serious crime. if the atma has not entered the developing sareer, destroying the home of the atma is still an incredibly serious crime.
  22. After the American economy crashed the govt realised they were brown-nosing the wrong country and apparently it makes more sense to sell out canadian values to Eastern countries now...
  23. I've heard that many innocent Sikh youth are being arrested without cause these days. For some reason the govt has stepped up its campaign against Sikh dharm in recent years.
  24. Here's a shabad for insomnia. The effects probably won't be immediate, do this shabad everyday as instructed, in like 2 weeks your insomnia will start to go away. maybe earlier. look up the full shabad on sikhi to the max. bilavel mahalla 5 rog giaia prabh aap gavaia, need paiea sukh sahaj ghar aiaia raho Transliteration is a bit messed but you can probably find it. recite it every single night before bed at least 15 times. once it's memorized keep on reciting it until you get to sleep.
