The Name Nanak

Recommended Posts

It was an auspicious name only given out according to a birth according to the astrological maps at the time of birth. There are no records to say that Nanak was or was not used before Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The closest was the name 'Nanu' who claimed to be the avtar of Nanak as predicted in the Bhavishat Puran. Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught him about falsehood in Kurakshetar with the shabad "Maas Maas Kar Moorakh Chagarde"

That the Guru jyot was Raja Janak in previous Yugas can be found in the Bhatta de sawaiye on Guru Angad as well as in the persian miharban mohsin fani...

i found that Panth Parkash says Guru Nanak was named after Nihlanki (the kalki avatar mentioned in hinduism)

The reference to Guru Angad being Janak in a past incarnation is found in the Bhattan de Svayye:

You hold tight to the Naam, the Name of the Infinite Lord; Your expanse is immaculate. You are the Support of the Siddhas and seekers, and the good and humble beings. You are the incarnation of King Janak; the contemplation of Your Shabad is sublime throughout the universe. You abide in the world like the lotus on the water. Like the Elyisan Tree, You cure all illnesses and take away the sufferings of the world. The three-phased soul is lovingly attuned to You alone. O Kal, chant the Praises of Lehnaa throughout the seven continents; He met with the Lord, and became Guru of the World. || 3 ||

(section in praise of the second Mehl)

The same reference is made about Guru Arjan in the section in praise of the fifth Mehl:

|| The benign rule of Raja Janak has been established, and the Golden Age of Sat Yuga has begun. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the mind is pleased and appeased; the unsatisfied mind is satisfied. Guru Nanak laid the foundation of Truth; He is blended with the True Guru. In the House of Guru Raam Daas, Guru Arjun has appeared as the Embodiment of the Infinite Lord.

The term "historical reference" used by N3O is inappropriate, first of all because Janaka is not mentionned in historiographical accounts but in the epic poem Ramayana by Valmiki, secondly because the reference in this case is a textual one not a historical one.

Janak was the not the actual name of Sita's father. His name was Seeradhwaj. The term 'Raja Janak' was a title used by all the kings of Mithila.

Also doesn't the term Nanake(n) mean the mother's side of family in Punjabi? Maybe that might have some connection with Guru Nanak's Dev Jee's name.

As King Janak was ascending to SachKhand, He heard the cries of Hell and had shown mercy. With his penance he had gotten 960 million souls redeemed. The redeemed souls were given a temporal life within the astral plane, after which due to the cosmic law, had to descend to this mortal plane to take rebirth. Raja Janak had been sent by Akal Purakh to assume the form of Guru Nanak and bestow supreme liberation upon the redeemed jivas, freeing them from birth and death.

The name Nanak is used ina the Bhavishat Puran written by Rishi Ved Dyas about the future. in it he writes a canto about the birth of a Bedi by the name of Nanak who will be the greatest avtar in any jug.

You can find the gurmukhi version of the bhavishat puran quotes in the Pehili Pothi of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Katha by Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji Bhindra Walae.

There are a number of Vedic and Lokic Parmans that testify to the authority of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji but i think we can leave that for a different thread

There is no mention of any Nanak in the Bhavishya Purana. It's one of these very late puranas in which everyone wishes to see whoever they want to see in it. What is probable is that Gurbachan Singh Bhindranwale interpreted Kalki avatar to be Guru Nanak as does Tara Singh Narotam in his chapter on avtarvad in his Gurmat Nirnay Sagar.

Couplet: Astrologer wrote out the birth-chart feeling much gratification at heart. On seeing the beauty of the child, he smiled profusely again and again.10

Quatrain: The birth chart was written out by him. It was explained at length to mother and father. The astrologer said, ‘let him be revered. A perfect man has arrived. Glory appears to attend his person. He is the blemish-less person’. He drew out and placed ‘N’ before them as first letter, from the word Nehkalank (blemish-less). He was named Nanak after Nehkalank. 11.12. Anyone who came to see him felt happy and was greatly charmed. He would long to see him many times and would not be satiated with looking at him.13

Couplet: Some said say he was a wielder of miraculous powers, some said he was an incarnation. Yet others asserted he would be a king under the imperial umbrella.14
