I recently started listening to this Sukhmani Sahib katha and think it has excellent guidance and reinforcement on naam simran.

    Highly recommended and very inspiring.

    Brother Lucky Jee,
    verily true your quotation above.

But let us ask ourselves, who does His Simran?

Because simran everyone does, of one type or the other. Big big rishis, munis, tapasvees of the heights of Ravan for example, did the simran of mantras related to the deities of higher planes.

These higher planes, like devlok, Swarg, Baikunth, relams of Brahma, Shiva, etc .... can be achieved by one´s karmas or efforts, however hard they maybe....

But, to start with, even His Simran, can only be performed by us, with His grace alone, if He so wishes.

That is His Mauj. Nobody can copy it, demand it, or negotiate it.

That is why the Bani very clearly says: Se simreh, jisnoo Aap simrae.

Then, as per this His grace, once He makes us meditate on Him, then everything falls at its own place.... then only the mind gets tuned into His Simran, and all the good qualities like: sense of discrimination, humility, forbearnce, gratefulness, contentment, truthfulness, come up like cream on the milk.

When He wants you back, He just arranges everything for that jeeva, that soul.

The pull from within for Him, is that, He is pulling our rope towards Him, and we may feel we are moving towards Him.

But the fact is, without His pull we would not even think about Him.

And this pull at all steps of the devotee, is nothing but His unbounded grace .....

Haven´t we ever heard: Deena bandhu deena Nath, meree doree Tere haath.

Dhan Dhan Satguru Nanak Dev Maharaj, tells us in Japji Sahib something very beautiful on this topic:
Karmee aavae kapra, nadree mokh duaar.

He says; by your good actions, karmas, you may get health, wealth, possesions, you may become even the ruler of the three worlds.

But, to get emancipation from the cycle of births and deaths, and acceptance at His court´s door, is only possible with His grace, which follows realization of His Omnipresence and Omnipotence.

Dhan Dhan Guru Ram Das Maharaj tells us in Raag Kalyan, that, when Wahiguru gracefully writes on our forehead, to do His Bhakti, then only due to this His Hukum, our life walks on the path chalked already by Him.

    ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਡਭਾਗ ਮਥਈ
So Har Har Naam Dhhiaavai Har Jan Jis Baddabhaag Mathhee
    सो हरि हरि नामु धिआवै हरि जनु जिसु बडभाग मथई
That humble servant of the Lord who has such good fortune written on his forehead meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har

He has already supplied with all that we may need to walk in His direction, not only that, but He actually walks with us, holding our hand and make us walk with Him, otherwise we are so stupid, that we may get lost in the inmensity of His creation.

So then, what is our role in this divine play?

Our whole job is nothing as our own merits, but just being receptive to His grace, which is the driving force in all our interaction with Him.

    Sat Sree Akal.

We should get into the habit with both actions and thought processes that "HE is the DOER"
He does, he commands, we exist only because of his doing and it's all his play.
As soon as we start assuming or calculating some efforts we think that are our own doing then immediately we step towards further boundaries of Duality.

    ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੂਜਾ ॥
    Parabẖ kai simran binsai ḏūjā.

    What is DUJA ??
It is the duality...or the other side of EK-Onkaar.
On one side there is 'EK Parabh, the One almighty,... and on the other side of the duality fence there is the Ego filled existence.
This ego is the one that claims credit for all good efforts but tries to deny, even to itself ,...it's own shortcomings !

I know we are all in different situations as per karmic relationships and social/economic/work status. Therefore we may have to make different amends or dealings with fulfilling karmas that can quite easily make us feel like we have put in more effort that our neighbor let's say.... But in my opinion, I think it's wiser and safer to start treading this path with the 'it's not me' ego attitude. This should make the journey more positive in our own spiritual development.

We have to learn to crawl before we can learn to walk this path. So what better way to start, in knowing that it is God who is leading all the crawling.

    Brother,
it is His Grace, His hukum which makes us put the effort; or say it the other round, it is His alone Grace which gives sense to our efforts.

To summarize in few words the reality of existence, is possible in the following two points:

    1) Sat : Wahiguru Akal Purukh and His Naam. There where He is, it is all harmony, permanent, and blissfull.

    2) Asat:Maya and all the paraphernalia due to it, or let us say, everything apart from Him. Here nothing is permanent, everything is transient, full of faults, pain and sorrow, birth & death....

And our sole purpose is, to cross from darkness of agyanta, towards Him, the source and origin of True Light.

But how to achieve this? Is it by chance? By our efforts?

Well, the answer to these questions, is given to us by Sachay Patshah Guru Arjun Dev Maharaj in Raag Aasaa, in the following words:

    ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹੋਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਤ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਈ
Prabh Hoe Kirapaal Th Eihu Man Laaee
    प्रभु होइ क्रिपालु त इहु मनु लाई
When God shows His Mercy, then this mind is focused on Him.

I think, having these words of Guru Jee full of wisdom and Truth in front of us, we do not need any more debates nor elaborations ....

You see, having eyes and keeping them open widely, even then, in utter darkness we shall see nothing .....

But with Light, we shall see everything around us.

It is the presence or absence of Light, which makes the difference.

In a similar way, it is because of His Grace alone, for which we can move(our efforts) towrads Him.

It is by His Hukum, His pyar, His Daya Meher, that we can ever even think of Him, and long for His darshan.

As First Patshahee has stated also: Sochay soch na hovaee, jeh sochay lakh vaar.

All our efforts, our thinking, even a hundreds of thousands of times is in vain, if His Hukum is not menat for us....yugas upon yugas may pass away, but without His Glance of Daya Meher, we have absolutely nothing to do....

We are all blind, not only that, but heavily filthy(karmically) also ....

So unless, He with sight, catches us by our arm, and pulls us along with Him, all our efforts are useless.

    Sat Sree Akal.

The best thing that I can say is to Not give up or get scared of Prabh ka simran.

I'm not going to try and find or give conclusions to your scenario in this case but all I can say is that it is a major distraction because it has weakened your frame of mind.
You need to pump up with a stronger mental and positive attitude that should help you steer from the many obstacles that are to come on this path.
One solution is to stop asking and questioning yourself of ''why is this happening?'' and ''what does it mean?''......because that won't help in your progress.
Believe me, In my experience you can definitely override it all by self tuning your mind and insisting to yourself that you only want your Dhyan on His simran and nothing else.

    Veer Jee,
first of all, when we talk or deal with Wahiguru, time factor should not be there. He is our beloved, and we are His lovers, and if we are true lovers, we should not complain at all.

Suppose we want to walk towards the east, but, by mistake we walk towards the west, what will happen? Well, we will be going away from our objective. Then the more we walk in the wrong direction, the farther we go from Him....

So, since we stepped into this creation(for countless yugas), we have definetely being going in the wrong direction, and the proof is, that we are not with Him....

In comparison to this, what to say if we do His meditation for 2 hours, but even if we did 24 hours of bhakti, that too for millions of years, then too, that would not be sufficient to come near ever to Him.

So brother, we are condemmed right from birth; it does not sound nice at all to keep accounts with Him.

The thing is, we have to be like and stay as "kookars" at His door. The Master whenever thinks fit, He will let us in.

He is not deaf nor blind, He knows everything. Whenever He thinks fit, He will shower His Daya Meher, which will enable us to savour His Amarit Nam, and also allow us to merge in Him. And this merging, is not accomplished with our useless efforts, but with the Glance of His Daya Meher.

So feel blessed that at least you stay at His door by doing His bhakti... there are millions upon millions out there, who are wandering aimlessly.

So brother cheer up, do not get dismayed ever, as He has chosen you to stand at His door...keep on knocking(doing the Bhakti of His Naam Simran).

    Sat Sree Akal.

Singh that's pretty much it I think.
My father's death was sudden and painless from what I saw. He appeared peaceful though he said he was struggling to speak (yes he was speaking and moving at one point. This was after his pulse disappeared).
Later when I was meditating outside the emergency room, the images I kept getting were unusual. It was my father, me and a bright light-being together. So I think he did go home at that point or earlier.

    Veer ji,
In my view all is his grace. One who is gonna meet his master is already imbued with divine blessings from his birth. So if one does such attempts to meet his purkh, then it's too due to his virtues. So all matters is our love towards our master. If our love is true and strong enough, then we will appear to have enough wisdom and the right direction in our ongoing journey. All we need to do is to concentrate on our kamai rather than to worry about it.All happen with time and by his will.So love is the strongest tool to unlock anything and love for the true master is the biggest achievement.

refererence: The Radiance of complete journey to Akaal Purkh chapter- Sant baba Aiya Singh Hoti Mardan giving divine sermons( on love) to Sant baba jawala Singh Ji. What is love? Love: Love is the divine law. It will win where reason fails. God is love and love is God. It is to surrender one's self to the beloved and giving away own heart and moving like a bewildered person. If you want to know about love, then ask love itself. Do not ask anybody else, he will not answer !. Only love knows how to describe itself lovely. It will explain pretty well what it is. True love means to give up possession or self. Until ego is renounced no one can find that path of love. Cleanse your heart, like a mirror(glass) clear and simple. So long heart has imprints of lust one cannot see the face of love. Love gives life to humans, true love negates greed, Kabir sahib says: Everybody talks about love, yet no one expereinces love. Only such a person knows love, as remains, imbided in it day and night. If love came and gone, everybody saw it but if one cries now then laughs next moment, it is not love. Shalok Mohalla 4 (p-301) My body and mind are ever imbued with my lord's love, Be though merciful, O god, that I Abide in Guru's peace. (1) God's love grants such a high vision that to even a helpless that he does not care about the kings(Master of corwn) and throne, lover weaves gorgeous clothes like attish and kim khwab with the blood of his heart and spreads under the feet of his beloved. Only lover can help someone to reach God's court and attaining to such a position is real ascention to God's place(Heaven). If you want to read the true story of ascention of love then look at the face of some true lover. From his face, one can have the glimplse of love. In love, Gardens of happiness bloom in heart's blood. Lovers are always absorbed in God's love. On this path several mansoors turn down worldy honours and choose to kiss the crucifixion instead. How can one gain the wealth of divine love? Without guide's instruction it is not possible. Only some one with large heart can win this with God's grace. How to recognise love? If you find someone lost in despair and disheartned he is deviod of love. He does not belong to the realm of love. Even though studded with thorns, a lover is always happy like some body in garden in spring. Find not such a one lonely because he is always in God's embrace. Should I offer Nimaz (Muslim prayer) or look in your way? How can I visit kahba (God's place in holy mecca) Bulleh shah The Nimaz of memories lie in bowing down before God and lovers Nimaz in forgetting one's body. Ablution of memories is in washing hands and feet but lover's ablution is washing hands off the world. Unless you take your hands off the worldy tempations do not remember God because without Wuzzo, Nimaz is not acceptable in Islamic Code(Shria). Having delivered such lovely sermon, sahib siri baba aiya singh ji hoti mardan waley threw glance towards the sipahi(jawala singh). Lover had filled his goblet of heart with love..tears of joy began to role down his face and his head tilted towards baba ji's feet. Eyes of mind became Ganga-Jamuna and he washed baba ji's feet with tears. It was like his own heart cleaned up.. his forehead got blessed with baba ji's feet touch. The way of love began to rise in his heart and his tongue un-intentionally moved in meditation. Glands of knowledge opened up. Heart began to feel coolness of love. Light flashed up. Six close cycles(chakars) turned up. Petals blossomed up. Unstruck melodies became aloud. All hair turned into tongues and every single hair changed into divine word. He began to realise all around. Baba Aya Singh Ji merged jawala singh ji into sargun-nirgun. There was flood of light all around. Having done this miracle, Baba Ji again came into being and turned jawala singh to an saint. He lifted him from his feet, took him in embrace and asked, "Now tell me, do you know me or not? "Jawala Singh began to weep in low and said, "By your grace, I have come to know of my real self. I am thankful to you I have realised that I have been your servant since many births. You are my mentor(Murshid). Then Baba Jawala Singh became silent. Baba Aya Singh Ji thus turned sipahi into saint and blended him into his own being. Grace of Give commandmends given by Baba Ji: 1. Remember God breath by breath 2. Never be egoist. 3. Keep company of those detached from the world. 4. Do not Beg. 5. Be aloof. Sant jawala Singh Ji listened to the commandments and dutyfully observed all throughout life.

    Beautiful topic Neo Veer Jee,
reading it now, I recall something related to it quite a few years back....

I do not remember, if I read it, or heard it from someone, but the thing is, I liked it a lot and it was graved on my mind and heart, and so I will surely share it with the sangat here....

It all started with the the tuk " Charan Kamal Tere doe doe peevaa ......"

You see, if there are Charan Kamal, surely, Charnamrit is also bound to be there .....

So the explanation I saw or was given, was that, as Wahiguru is Nirankar, doing His Simran, was like washing(doe, doe) His Lotus Feet.

And then, as a consequence of that His Simran bhakti, the Shabad is audible. So, listening that divine melody, that Akashi Bani, that Shabad Dhun, is like drinking the Charnamrit of Wahiguru....

I found it quite rational and logical also, cause we know through the Bani, that listening to that Shabad , that Naam within us, is the only way, to become free from the cycle of births and deaths, and also the means to merge in Wahiguru.

Dhan dhan Satguru Sachay Patshah Arjan Dev Maharaj, regarding the topic of this thread, tells us something very very beautiful in His Bani, in Raag Maajh:

    Amrit Banee Har Har tayree.
The Word of Your Bani, Lord, is Ambrosial Nectar
sun sun hovai param gat mayree.
Hearing it again and again, I am elevated to the supreme height.

So after reading the lines above, we may ask ourselves, it is o.k that His Name/Naam is the Amrit, but then how do we get it?

The natural answer is, by concentration, by meditation on His Nam Simran.

Thrid Patshahee confirms this, when He says in Anand Sahib: Naam jinke man vaseeya, vajeh Shabad ganere.
When the mind is stilled by Simran, the soul awakens from its deep sleep, and sees the Jot and the listens the Dhun, emanating from the Shabad.

Of course, this is a very high and desirable state of purity, but neverthless, it is our very birth right, like a blessing upon us by Wahiguru, in this very human form.

    What else do we need?

Absolutely nothing. We just need seriously to do His bhakti, as means of His Simran, and with His Grace, Daya Meher, achieve all this spiritual wealth, stored by Him within each one of us, in equal measure.

    Sat Sree Akal.

    Today, I had two experiences.
    1) I heard my mother screaming Waheguru in her sleep this morning. She was screaming in a scared voice. At first I thought I should wake her up , but I let it be. She recited/screamed Waheguru 5-6 times in an elongated manner and then went back to snoring. I asked her, she said she couldnt remember everything, but she was scared of something & that is why was reciting Waheguru. Maybe some bad entity came and was scared away by the Gurmantra.
Also, when ever I felt scared during dreams, my reflex has always been to say Waheguru. So , whenever fear comes saying waheguru will cut it.

    2) I had a sensation of falling down from blank space while sleeping, i continued with it, it lasted for a very short while and then it felt as if hit the bed. Then I tried to get out of the body, I could only get up halfwayfrom lying to sitting position, the magnetic tug to physical body was too strong & then went back to sleep.

    Neo Veer Jee,

in my humble opinion, Guru Maharj is telling the mind, that it is not a "mamulee cheez", it is the essence of the Universal mind, and thus it should stop wandering and jumping around.

In short, it should change its behaiviour, from the lower tendencies, to become the higher mind.

Because this its wandering and running blindly after the mayavee padaharaths, is the cause of its pains and sorrows. it is time, it should rest by returninfg to its origin, Brahm.

Only then the soul is freed from its grip, and only then, this soul once freed from the mind, the cages of the3 bodies, the filth of all karma, can thus return to its origin, Satnam.

So, our freedom starts by placing each part at is natural place. Body left here, as a handful of dust, the astral, the causal bodies, and mind in the Brahm region..... and the pure soul or atma, in Sach Khand, in the Home of its True Father.

It is the reverse process of the soul when it came down into the creation. At each station downwards, it was given something, in order to function in those realms.

In the same way, while going upwards towards Sach Khand, out of the mayavee creation, it disposes off, that which is natural of that place.

Only the naked soul, free from all impurities and coverings, chains, bhandans...etc, can thus merge in Him.

    Sat Sree Akal,,
yes Pen Jee, you are right.... It is the mind who is playing mischief. This very mind, is a faithful agent of the Universal mind or Kal Purukh, who does not want the soul to go back to its Father´s home(Sach Khand)....

But we too are not less, we are in essence same as Wahiguru, we are His sikhs also, means His devotees, So by getting support of His Name, happen whatever it may, we should hold His name as our only anchor.

What can the worst happen? To die? So what? Well, even that would be a blessing, as it is said, if at the last moments of one´s life, we go where our thoughts are... So if we die doing His Simran, where shall we go? Naturally nowhere, but direct to Him, sooner or later.

So make yourself strong, do not give up, come whatever it may. You see, where His rememberance is, through His Simran, no disasters happen there...whatever evil maybe...it flees away, it can not stand the puruty of His Name.

Another point, you say, it is around 2 am, when you go through that scary phases, so, have you tried to change to any other time?
You see, we should leave no stone unturned to give our best, in the best conditions...The darkness of agyanta is within, it has nothing to do with outer time,so, try doing at other time, where you feel comforted, in the end, it is by His Naam alone, that our spiritual darkness will be removed, and His splendour will shine within us with full force....

Last, when one is sick(karmas, sanskaras), one does not like the taste of the medicine, but, we shall get cured only, by taking the daily regular doses of medicine(Naam Simran).

It is not a question of days or months....it is our love, which we have to offer at His Lotus Feet, through His Simran.
    Hum kookar tere Darbar...

    Pen Jee,
have you tried doing Simran on Wahiguru alone, as means of bhagti?

I think this should be helpful in overcoming you fears...

This is how I understand the steps as explained by Bhai Sahib. Taken from some of his books.

    Dhyaan

We have been told that dhyaan is a power. Dhyaan starts when our mind separates form the body and focuses on the subtle body (soul). Further spiritual progress can only be made through dhyaan. Naam can control the mind and then dhyaan can be controlled to any limit by our own will. This stage can only be achieved in the stage of awareness (jaagat). We meditate using the gurmantra to separate from our body (also known as separating from the air/pavan/poan) and then by focusing on Naam. Finally, we have to focus on God and unite with him. Dhyaan can only be controlled if we are thoughtless. We have to focus at one point to have control of our dhyaan.

if we want to unite with God then we should practice step by step to progress. First we have to leave thoughts (Maya), then we must get to Sunn, then we reach Naam or Anhad Bani, and finally we reach Naad (word of God). Naad helps us cross the bhavsagar and takes us to God. It means that to have union with God, we have to cross many stages.

    Stages:
    1) Swaas Graas simran by chanting Gurmantra to stop the thoughts. Focus on sound of Gurmantar. Term Swas Giras means simran with every breath and covers Bakahri/Vocal, Madhma/Whisper, Pasanti/Mental forms of Simran jaap.
1a) Swas Giras Simran - Simran with each and every breath.
1b) Swas Swas Simran - Whisper synchronised with breath all the way down to mental simran with breath but focused on sound not breath.
1c) Rom Rom Simran - Mental simran faster than the breath so you separate from breath and latch onto mantar , i.e. synchronized with pulse
1d) You have to cross the 5 elements, Air, Water, Fire, Earth and reach Ether/Akash.
    2) Enter the Sunn (like going to sleep to rest)
    3) Stay awake by dhyaan when free of thoughts. (Awoken by a loud blast)
    4) The divine words appear in Sunn.
    5) Anhad Bani (the divine music) appears to which you listen
    6) The mind enters the Sunn (third Sunn or Anhad Sun).
    7) Naad/Toor (word of God) appears which will help us cross the Bhavsagar (the dangerous ocean).
    8) The mind unites with God in Sehaj Ghar.

The way of spirituality based on Naam is different from this city of illusion. We need to leave these colours behind both in the material and subtle forms. Initially when starting meditation, do not focus on the trehkuti. When we stop our thoughts we should go to Sunn to begin the path. In Gurbani, we have been told about the indications of Tenth Door.

Those who close off the nine gates, and restrain the wandering mind,
    na-o dar thaakay Dhaavat rahaa-ay.

come to dwell in the Home of the Tenth Gate.
    dasvai nij ghar vaasaa paa-ay.

There, the Unstruck Melody of the Shabad vibrates day and night. Through the Guru`s Teachings, the Shabad is heard.
othai anhad sabad vajeh din raatee gurmatee sabad sunaavni-aa.
    SGGS 124

Gurbani explains that at the tenth door are the divine words or the divine music (anhad Shabads or anhad bani). There is no color, pictures or forms there. Gurbani has changed our path from Maya (illusion) to Naam. For example, a child can be distracted all day with colorful toys and different games and it will forget to eat its food. Similarly, the mind watches the colorful acts of Maya and forgets about its food. The mind that is stuck in these illusions does not want to leave Maya and reluctantly falls asleep. People may believe the mind of such a person has gone to Smaadhi and they presume they have attained a high spiritual stage. But Guru teaches us that this is the last stage of Kaal and it has to be crossed by Naam. After crossing this stage we can enter the Tenth Door and then true enlightenment begins. That light will be the light of our soul, which has been explained to us in Gurbani as:

Within the Gurmukh is intuitive peace and poise (Sehaj); his mind ascends to the Tenth Sky of the Akaashic Ethers.
gurmukh antar sahj hai man charhi-aa dasvai aakaas.

No one is sleepy or hungry there; they dwell in they dwell in the peace of the Naam (word of God).
tithai oongh na bhukh hai, har amrit naam sukh vaas.

O Nanak, pain and pleasure do not afflict anyone, where the Light of the Supreme Soul, illuminates.
naanak dukh sukh vi-aapat nahee jithai aatam raam pargaas.
    SGGS 1414

The house of our mind starts from the Tenth Sky (tenth door). The Tenth Sky is present all around our body. So the tenth door is not far and it is formless. Our body with nine doors is also present in the same area. After leaving the body (nine doors), our mind will enter the Tenth Door. It means we reside in God and He is inside us. Gurbani tells us:

The body is contained in the Lord, and the Lord is contained in the body. He is permeating within all.
har meh tan hai, tan meh har hai, sarab nirantar so-ay ray.
    SGGS 870

Other names for the tenth door have been given such as Nij Mahal, the fourth stage, Turi avastha, Unn Munn or the castle of our mind. By achieving that state, we will get enlightened. It depends on us how quickly we want to achieve that stage (by practical meditation). Once we enter the tenth sky, the divine light will appear. All of this practical work is done through dhyaan. Through dhyaan, the master (God) keeps an eye on us (world) and by the same way we can see God. Without spiritual knowledge we look towards this material world (ardh i.e looking down and in front of us), but by attaining the Guru’s knowledge we start to focus on Urdh (looking up – towards Sookh mahal, God).

The vision discussed is not about the physical eyes. Even a blind person can attain union with God. If the blind persons can meditate by dhyaan on Naam they will unite with God and have blessed darshan of God. If we don’t use the Jot (vision) of the mind, we are called spiritually blind, even though we have physical eyes.

This very question was asked by a sangat member to Bhai Sewa Singh Tharmala in a Q&A session during the 2009 simran camp. It was broadcast on wahegurulive.com only a few days ago. I will upload the audio for you to have a listen but his teaching suggests to let it happen and enter the state of Sunn. In this stage waheguru will wake you up himself with anhad bani.

Anyone have a problem with dozing off during simran with eyes closed? I am finding that at times I am sometimes sliping into a sleep state yet still consious. It's like your body is falling asleep yet you are still consious and know you are falling asleep. Should you bring yourself back to fully awakened consiousness, or go with the flow....

Any advice would be much appreciated..
