yes dally i agree, the abject failure of people to face up to that, and learn from it, is a danger that is posed today.

Why is it that our wardrobe making brothers haven't learnt from the lumpen section's mistakes over 150 years ago?

I mean it pretty obvious where ass-licking gets you. jats did it 150 years ago to the goray, our wardrobe making brothers have been doing it for the last 30 odd years to the hindus.

Our wardrobe making brothers all must be really clever, articulate, sophisticated (southerners) and highly-intellectual people, only because, and very simply because dally is. But why havent they learnt the lessons?

im not going into defensive mode, im going into the fact that you feel that your tongue doesnt gravitate towards anyones's arse, that the whole of the table-maker brotherhood is thus inclined, but in your highly-educated, intellectually, empowered mind(synonmous with southerner) for some reason, that all jats are arse-lickers of the english, whereas there is absolutely nothing to suggest that this is true.

if on the other hand we were to look at the majority of a people arse-licking, i think the table-makers would make a very good example.

I am going to spread the word, to you. The biggest arse-lickers in the Sikhs to the hindus and india, are the table-makers.

If you get jats arse-licking the edl, on the scale that you get the table-makers arse-licking hindu arse, then you, and the rest of the UK will know about it.

Or is this just a way of getting back? Knowing that the table-makers are arse-licking some seriously messed up criminals in the modern age, which affects our community now, but trying to disguise it with the actions of jats 150 odd years ago.

Instead, just focus on what you rightly say, that as SIKHS, we should not get involved where we dont need to. And forget the rest of the crap you try and give us about jats and stuff. you are going nowhere with it.

    You used the word "clan".
Tell us your definition. And who you represent.

They still see us as a the "sword-arm" of Hindus. And conveniently overlook the fact that Guru Sahib fought more against Hindu hill chiefs than the moghals.

We don't need to love them. We just don't need to hate them either. Whether the accept us Sikhs or not, is troublesome for you personally in what way?

Exactly. For someone who claims to be a follower of Dasam Bani...

Not really. Both are "kammis" workers or peasants. Jats ascendancy came through land ownership courtesy initially of Baba Banda Bahadur - a rajput. But Jats are recognised as a higher caste than tarkhans.

That is brilliant. Asking old or middle-age men " are you divorced? If yes you can guard the gurdwara, or else get back home..."

That has really made me laugh. Thanks for that.

yeh i saw the trailer, it seemed like the guy was hitting one of the kids.

it is filmed in Small Heath Birmingham, where I had the misfortune to work for a few months in 1995. i will never forget that place. Small Heath has the largest concentration of Muslims in the UK.

In Small Heath i worked in the Post Office, and once 2 Sikh girls came in, one was smoking, and when they gave me their childrens allowance books to cash, both had a child with muslim name. i can still remember the kids names after 15 years clearly. This was the first time ever I had come across this, Sikhs who had more or less become muslims.

There are loads of converts in small heath, black and white, and possibly some more sikhs.

But still the lessons havent been learnt by gurdwaras to adapt.

Got quite a few things going there Dal. Thanks for the aphids tip. Will try that as they can affect fruit trees. Ants don't seem to be a problem though.
Good work on recycling that wood! 😀 I recently constructed a barbell stand with the wood that from our old porch. It had begun to sink, so we had roof replaced. Had a lot of wood from that so decided to use it for a mini-project. Built myself a 4 rack barbell stand. Have around 120 kgs on it. It is quite solid.

I used a machine to cut the wood to size - my friend has one which came in very handy. I designed it myself mentally on how i wanted it to look and then sketched it out. It isn't perfect and i spent a lot of time getting the internal screws to align. But in the end it does the job perfectly.

In this charitar I see something that is unusual from the rest of the charitars in that there is a focus on the meal of the husband. The wife has ruined the meal of her husband yet concucts a story to explain why and using superstition or the advice of a Pandit she allays the fears of her husband. Now coming on to her husband. He works day and night, in his fields in a physically exerting job. Is the charitar telling us here that too much focus on work and less time on your spouse/family is not a good thing?

I understand where you're coming from Dal, but remember the girl leaves to live with her in-laws. The family aren't going to kill their own son. Maybe the girls brothers or father would take such a step. Kuri-maar is where the girl is killed for being a girl. Here Surjit wasn't killed for being a girl, as wasn't Sarbjit.
Yes, that is definitely weird. Why would they want to keep a child that isn't theirs and kill the woman (Surjit) who isn't theirs either.

I have finished the book after 2 marathon reading sessions. The next part of the whole murder and keep quiet thing is much more interesting. At first, although it is only one side of the story that we are reading, I was thinking that the author (if you can call her that) Sarbjit was a person who was very shallow and not conversant with Panjabi culture. She complains of havingto call her inlaws "Dad" and "Mom." I wonder if she ever asked her sisters after they got married whether they do the same? Sarbjit had an arranged marriage whereas the other sisters had more of a choice in partner. It is things like this that made me want to put this book to compost and rue the £2.74 spent on it.
Coming to the second part of the book, I got more of a picture of what Bachan kaur and Sukhdave were like as humans. Bachan Kaur was a normal, yes, normal, mother in law. She most likely was bossed around by her own mother inlaw, and she bossed around her daughter inlaw. I think that this relationship is quite a fraught, sensitive and delicate relationship. I am seen something in Bhai Gurdas Vaaran about this relationship as well. Basicaly Bachan Kaur is of the old school, and she wants to rule the household. The sons unfortunately pander to her every decision. This is something that they have been brought up with. Bachan Kaur is very much of the old "lakeer de fakeer" stock. Once the  words leave her mouth there is no chance they can be refused, negotiated or amended.
The way Bachan Kaur decides the daughters in law must take khande di pahul is one prime example.
Once Surjit had gotten pregnant by another man, the Athwal family should have just told her parents and asked them to collect her because the marriage was over. The "shame" would then have been on Surjits parents for what their daughter had done, rather than the Athwals. The Athwals made this mistake. Instead of languishing in jail for 20 odd years, they would have probably had more respect in the community by having told Surjits parents your daughter is pregnant by another man, not her husband.
The towards the end, I kind of felt a little empathy for what Sarbjit was feeling. The fear of knowing, the fear of silence, and the fear of the inlaws. Those must have been 7 terrible years to carry that burden. This end bit was actually quite exciting, thinking at any moment now, it's all going to explode.

I just wonder whether the Sikh community has learnt from the stupid mistake of the Athwals. I think we have.

This pothi has the mohar and signature of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
There was a Singh who got shaheed fighting alongside Maha Singh (father of Maharaja Ranjit Singh) of Sukerchakiya Misal. This pothi was with his family and was preserved by the future generations of this family.
Right now this pothi is with Tarna Dal Bhikhiwindiye who have 13 Gurdwaras/Chhaunnis in UP. This pothi sahib is being kept in the Khazana of the below Gurdwara Sahib.

very very interesting. i read it and it is very interesting. a problem though, how do we verify that any sites in mecca still exist? you can t go there yourself cos you're a kafir, and no muslim is going to search it out to come back and tell you about it, cos they hate ther notion of Guru Nanak Dev Ji going to mecca, unless they are trying to convinve you that Guru Ji was a muslim.

His predecessor was very antagonistic towards Sikhs but this one steered the nirankari mandal away from conflict with the sikhs and carried on his own business. I once met one of his followers and asked her about if they were ever taught about the previous one. She knew his name but nothing of his animosity towards Sikhs.
