I can't ever recall coming across it myself, I think it's specifically a jut practice (as opposed to Sikh) maybe? It has it's merits. Better than a women not having a man, especially a young one. 

If it were mentioned anywhere it would be in Prem Sumarag which goes into more detail about marriages than the others. But I'm sure if I came across it, I would have remembered?

It was probably practiced by other Punjabi castes/races too.

Maybe, I haven't heard of it though. Like I said, it has its merits.
