In order to let her raise her kids easily, this trend was sensible and popular in the societies. In past, it was difficult for a lady to remarry even when she has no kids. My naana passed away at very young age and my naana's unmarried younger brother marry my naani. Better than a women not having a man, especially a young one. If it were mentioned anywhere it would be in Prem Sumarag which goes into more detail about marriages than the others.
