  1. perhaps instead of taking 'evil' literally, it can be expanded upon to explain concepts such agyantaa, bharam, vikaars, etc.
  2. I don't know if his 'seva' is parvaan by Guru Sahib or not, but there are numerous rehitnamae that state that a Sikh should not eat from the hands of the hands of someone that smokes or a mona. Therefore I assume that someone that smokes should not be given degh dee seva. Tobacco is considered jagat jooth and there are many rehitnamae and sakhis that illustrate how far a Sikh should stay from it.
  3. Khalsa Jeevan is written by Baba Kartaar Singh, and as I know of, no translation exists. It actually is pretty easy to understand, granted you can understand simple punjabi and read gurmukhi. Taksal publications overall are pretty easy to read. I think Kam wrote that he is in the process of translating the first volume of Guru Granth Sahib steeks that were originally published during Sant Kartaar Singh's times and are based on Sant Gurbachan Singh's katha. If Kam is translating this, it will be surely be a gem, the punjabi steeks and the katha they are based upon are amazing. For all the accolades that Gyani Takhur Singh gets for his jap jee sahib katha, his katha is based upon the arth done by Sant Gurbachan Singh and are almost exactly out of this steek. Not saying that he isnt deserving of the accolades, as it is great that he spread the giaan, just trying to point out that the steek and Sant Gurbachan SIngh's katha is on a level of its own. Listen to Jap jee sahib katha of his and bhagat fareed jee's saloks if you dont believe me.
  4. until u learn from a good ustad, I would think you shouldn't alter, or do your own translations. If you really want to do something, maybe you could find an old teeka written in gurmukhi and translate it...that would be some good seva.
  5. maha kharag is right. Anyone that has ever followed punjab politics knows that all these 'revertng to puratan maryada', 'bringing together the panth' stuff is nothing more than a joke. Whether it is Maan dal, bittu or jathedar iqbal singh starting these 'movements', its nothing more than an attempt to get more power. The funny thing is that everytime something like this happens, all the gullible sikhs fall for it, and look like fools afterwards. As I once read, Hindus anticipate a storm and act in advance, Muslims act once the storm has hit, but Sikhs wait for the storm to hit, wait 50 years and then act. If sikhs had any sort of political intuition they would have realized that for the last 25 years its been nothing but one type of publicity stunt after another. Regardless of how many freedom marches, or anti-india rallies these politicians organize, the truth is that none of them care for the panth.
  6. http://www.acrosoftware.com/products/cutep...er.asp#download cutepdf printer, its free, easy to use, and i've used to it for turning gurmukhi into a pdf, so it should work.
  7. if everyone is expecting ekta to come through 1 unified maryada that sets out specific rules about every small thing, it just isnt going to happen. There are too many small differences/egotistical issues between sampardas/jathas for this to happen. I think a better idea would be for everyone to develop some tolerance for the beliefs of others when it comes to smaller differences such as chatka. A unified maryada could be useful for setting out minimum nitnem, status of Gurbani such as dasam granth, guidelines for amrit sanchaar, standard kakaars, defining bajjar kurehits, and other such similar stuff.
  8. SGPC is honestly useless. It is an elitist organisation that is only good for further institutionalizing Sikhi. All the stuff they do should be managed by jathedar of akaal takhat. Therefore, there should be no president of SGPC. SGPC should just be abolished.
  9. I met them last time I went to India, seemed to have a lot of gyaan and nimartaa. they explained a bunch of bachitar naatak and deeper arths of it in the little time I had to talk to them.
  10. correctly me if im wrong, but laavan is in raag soohee, and i think the ideal time for that is 3am-6am. THerefore doesnt it make most sense for amritvela anand kaaraj?
  11. itihasik: bhai pinderpal singh did katha on guru gobind singh jee's avtar diharra gurpurb, the recording is somewhere on the internet, its amazing bhai pinderpal singh - in one of the first 2-3 files in the salok mahalla nauvan recordings he starts talking a lot about shaheedi of guru teghbahadur as well as bhai mati das, bhai sati das and bhai dayalla jee. I can't remember what was said, but i just remember that it was really good. parts of ardaas katha by bhai pinderpal singh are also amazing - ardaas katha is probably the best collection of kathas by bhai pinderpal singh in my opinion. the bir rassi katha on gurmatveechar.com by jangvir singh is really good too. bani katha: Sant Gurbachan Singh - jap jee sahib (must listen, if sant guebachan singh's is too fast, then listen to gyani takhur singh's) Sant Gurbachan Singh - Bhagat fareed jee's saloks Sant Gurbachan Singh - I could list a lot more, but in truth, all of the katha done by Sant Gurbachan Singh is pretty good, listen to any of it and you'll love it...baawan akhree, asa dee vaar, rehraas are other ones i thought were really good. There is also the salok in raag maajh (akhee baajhu vaekhnaa, vin kanna sunnana), sampardain teekas, from what i heard, usually have arond 16 arth of this salok...Sant Gurbachan Singh does like 25-30 of them. Sant Kartaar Singh - Kirtan Sohila katha, its on gurmatveechar.com - pretty much the same arth done as sant gurbachan singh, but more explanation and saakhian done in the middle. Sant Kartaar Singh - sant kaa maarag dharam kee pauree - they go thru the 7 stages of brahmgian which I believe are found in yog vashisht, and talk about some other things as well. I remember the katha being on the barsi of a mahapurkh...cant remember which one anymore
  12. the saddest part of this whole ordeal is that the UK sangat as well as sikhawareness members completely swallowed the crap coming from bahadur's mouth for so many years. You can still see some uk sangat, and to some extent some sikhawareness members, propogating the hatred that originated in bahadur's mouth. Its a shame that so many people actually considered him a scholar and innocently fell victim to his agenda.
  13. Neo, even most missionaries dont have malice intentions...they just happen to have messed up beliefs. If you are going to say that intentions is all that matters, then perhaps you should rethink the shariapanthi, fanatic, extremist, tatkhalsa fanatic labels. I think you can even make a case that Ram raiay didn't have malice intentions, they just got conned into following ram rai.
  14. I could be completely off with this, but techniques like this can be useful, but don't get to the root of the problem. When you use the technique, perhaps your 'urges' will cease for a while, but they will come back, and will likely even come back stronger due to the hormones feedback systems in your body. A person that uses a technique like this will be screwed if he ever stops using it. In this sense, perhaps this technique can be classified as a form of yoga anand? This technique never deals with the root of the problem, I don't think anyone will disagree that the only way to get to the root of the problem is through true gian.
  15. if you can get this book to sacha sauda, they can put it online on their website, and they also ship books out by mail, so anyone can buy it.
  16. listening to that file sounded as if you were listening to sant kartaar singh's katha.
  17. I think that we need to make a distinction between a scholar/kathavachak/pracharak and a typical sikh living a grisht jeevan. I think that a pracharak/kathavachak should read and understand literature of other mats. However, for practical reasons, I must agree with chatanga's post that reading Satguroo's bani is enough, and anything above is a bonus. I think two more points need to be made here the: 1) Reflection on bani is required...personally I think sangat of Gursikhs, katha by mahapurkhs and steeks are a good way of going about this. Listening to people that are well learned, and are practicing gurmat is very important. It is Guru Gobind Singh Jee's hukam for a Sikh to listen to katha everyday. 2) I think it should be understood that reading bani is not easy ("any idiot" cannot do it). Anyone that has done any amount of santhiya can tell you this. Learning how to read bani can be quite difficult in itself and it takes tons of effort and maharaj's kirpa to become a good paathi. From personal experience, I feel that it is very difficult to reflect on bani without first learning how to read it.
  18. A little off topic, but given that the bani of sidh gost has come up in this thread, I'd like to ask if anyone knows of any in depth steeks of this bani by nirmalae. If anyone knows of one, please post it, and if possible, where it can be obtained from. I know Sant Gyani Gurbachan Singh's katha of Sidh Gost is online, and I've listened to parts of it, but I was wondering if there is any indepth teeka of Sidh Gost.
  19. you can always get the pandit narain singh steeks or senchiyan though.
  20. chandi dee vaar is in taksal sundar gutka and the beant baanian sundar gutka that you can get in sacha sauda. They also have das granthi pothis there published by SGPC (beware of spelling mistakes in these), I dont think they budha dal gutkae there. I'm not sure what gutka would have shastar naam mala though, I dont think its part of das granthi, and I dont think they have budha dal or hazoori sundar gutkae there, nor do i think they have the beant baanian taksal gutka there.
  21. seeing that you live in Canada... if you live in the Toronto area, goto sacha sauda, you'll find a pothi there for sure, if you are in BC, there are places in surrey that you can get pothis.
  22. all the katha that is done on raagmaalaa by students of taksal is based on the arth done by sant gurbachan singh. the katha is all really similar, whether you listen to sant jarnail singh, giani pooran singh, or giani takhur singh, the arth are the same, but giani pooran singh gives more examples and expands more than the others.
  23. gurmatveechar.com look under gurbani ucharan, bhai parwindarpal singh or you can goto the complete dasam granth recordings and tua prasaad choupee is in the first file, and the rest of akaal ustat is in the second and third files
  24. I have no clue what is going on, and haven't been following the situation...but either way, I think whatever vijaydeep says is trash. He has already wrote multiple times that he is a worker of RSS and that he is trying to get budha dal involved with RSS. Who cares what vijaydeep says, if anything, his support of balbir singh just adds substance to the rumours that balbir is a police cat. Also, since when did the title "panth patshah" start being handed out?
