There are a few lines in this that make the theme stand out.

The weak translation done by bindra misses out these important pieces:

The ugly milkman had a beautiful wife
That young woman was captivated on seeing a King (2)

The woman was pained by the milkman
(he used) Sharp words were said day and night
She was not allowed to go to sell millk/butter (the actual word meaning is makhan)
Her jewellery was taken and sold (3)

Nothing about beating her in original text

This young woman was known by the name of Soorchhat
Under his protection she was greatly cared for (4)
The translation gives his name as "chhater ket" but that just means "royal protection."

When the milkman would lower his head in order to milk the cow
The King would come to her and take her in his arms (6) (translation says he fumbles with her, what on earth is fumbling??)

Both  young King and woman felt peace after their enjoyment (no menion of sex in original story) (10)
    will add some more later.

A few more thoughts on this.

What you have written above is true but of half of the equation. It's "what you are missing that is happening right in front of you."

The wife is embracing the object of her heart right next to her husband, but as he is engrossed in his job, he is unaware of what she is doing. The Minister is telling the King, that the milkman was looking at something that he never noticed what activities a person right next to them was doing. The Minister is pointing out that a man should always be aware of whats going around him.

Now another point the Minister made here was that the cow moved and spilled some milk. The wife covered her tracks by saying that the calf was after some milk and this was why the cow was moving, and the milk was spilling. The husband just accepted her excuse without lifting his head up to see what was happening.

Remember how this starts off as well. " The Minister narrated a tale that made the whole court go silent." Why would they go silent? Because they see how easy it is to be deceived by someone so close, in relation and physical proximity.

Humble namaskar to anyone who helps others. But here in the UK whilest this crises was making headline news, I counted at least 8 muslim tv channels who were supporting the same cause and raising a lot more mone than khalsa aid. There was a case in Pakistan where a sikh girl of 17 was abducted and forced to marry a muslim this year. As of yet she has not returned home. khalsa aid really could have helped that family with moeny for legal representation. We don't make any headway with one or two brownie points.

At my local Gurdwara, there was a Sampat Paath, where there are 6 big degs full of jall to be given to sangat after bhog. One time the jall was taken very quickly so the next time the committee decided rather to invest in more degs, to buy buy cases of plastic bottled water and give these out to the sangat after bhog of Sampat Paath.

chatanga1 got a reaction from paapiman in Background to Sri Charitropakhyan Sahib jee
I was talking to a very highly educated young non-Sikh about literature and I sent him  a brief summary of the main story in Sri CharitroPakhyan Granth and the first charitar in it. He read it and got the idea behind it and also informed me that Constantinople, a great King of many centuries ago, found himself in a very similair situation. Constantine had 2 wives and the one wife wanted her son to be king, so she complained to King that his son (from the other wife, who was in line for the throne) had tried to force himself on her. She presented herself to the King in a similiar fashion but the King had his son put to death. Later he realised his mistake and had his wife (the complainent) killed as well.

Looking at this Charitar just to being with from the two works above, the essence of the story is shown in the last part. It isn't a long story at all. The significance is of the word "ਤਕੀਆ" which means support, and in the setting that is being used, it can also mean a pillow.

This is what I think from this:
The King and the woman are together when the husband arrives home. The woman throws a sheet over the King and arranges for him to be a support/pillow on their bed. Then the woman is involved with her husband on the bed with the King underneath them. So the message here is that the wise minister is saying to King Chitar Sen that your Queen has throw a sheet over you (like a parda) so you cannot see what she is doing. Sometimes in Panjabi we say "ਪੱਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੱਤ ਦੇ ਪਰਦਾ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ."  The question of support comes from the fact that the King beleived the Queen absolutely without trying to ascertain the truth. The King himself has become a support for the Queen because of his own infatuation/moh with her.
    Moving on from this:
In fear the King is not able to breathe out loudly for fear of arousing suspicion. Here it seems to me the minister is saying to the King that just as the King in the charitar knew he was in the wrong and was to scared to breathe because of this, ask yourself whether you are too scarewd to question your own feelings towards the Queen. "Are you scared that by not beleiving her, you will lose her?"   etc.

    Dayuuum! Its very long.

The chhands in Krishnavtar regarding "Kharag Singh " start from 1170. I have only glanced through the english translation to begin with but there is also mention of the Pandavs and Kauravs both fighting on the same side as well. It seems like some of the names are used to highlight certain attributes of people ie there is a "Karodhit Singh" who speaks harshly to Krishna.

On a side note, Basant Rut has started, and it so great to hear Raag Basant played every morning from Sachkhand Sri HariMandir Sahib.

Will do. I can see why the Varan are called the key to Guru Granth Sahib. They give a very good analysis of the event leading upto the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Because they are short verses they can also be discussed with chlildren or people with short attention spans. I have only read vaar 1 and am currently re-reading it.
