    TRUE DEVOTION

The whole world is absort in doing all types of poojas, paaths, jap, tap, yog and an endless list of outer practices, beleiving them to be bhakti, which will lead them to the Lord.....

But, Dhan Dhan Satgur Nanak Dev Maharaj, in His Bani in Raag Sorath, tells us what type of only devotion we must perform, in order to please Wahiguru Akal Purukh and merge in Him.

In a simple language, and few words,He summarizes us the essence of spirituality.

    He tells us:

    ਲਾਇ ਚਿਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੰਮੁ
Laae Chith Kar Chaakaree Mann Naam Kar Kanm
    लाइ चितु करि चाकरी मंनि नामु करि कमु
Let your service be the focusing of your consciousness, and let your occupation be the placing of faith in the Naam.

He says, the devotion you must perform is, the one which allows you to focus your attention, your soul consciousness on Him, and that "chakree", that devotion, is the Simran of His Naam.

Other practices scatter our attention outside in the world, but the sacred practice of His Naam Simran, withdraws our attention from the mayavee world, and elevates it into the higher spiritual consciousness realms, and gradually from there on, with the aid of Shabad Guru, we are carried across all the stages of creation, till the end when we reach Sach Khand and Wahiguru Akal Purukh, gives us a huge embrace of Love, then only we merge in Him.

Such is the wadeeayee of Him and His Naam....

    Sat Sree Akal.

    Dear Ragmala,
you must bear in mind, that since we have left our Father´s House, Sach Khand, we have been collecting dirt on our souls. And this has been since countless aeons....

So do you really think or anybody that with some time given to simran, one can wash all of one´s huge filth?

The mind has been wandering since then, not even for a second it has stopped to rest ... it is continously runnig outside in the maya powered by the 5 vikars ... so however one´s strong efforts maybe in bhakti, believe it, we by ourselves, can never ever reach or have any spiritual achievements...

    So then what to do?

Leave yourself as "kookar" at His Door without wavering .... It is by the water of His Daya Meher, that we can be washed and become pure paviter.

You see, when you say it seems you have gotten no where ..... remove away even those thoughts, because in that way, we are not totally given in His Dhyan, as we are still conscoius of ourselves of not having seeing or feeling anything ....

In His bhakti, we have to behead ourselves, not literally, but, means to be motionless, mindless ..... then when the haume, or I /me vanishes with His Simran, only He remains.... and then we shall have His Darshan.

    Sat Sree Akal.

Gskler ji..........I think it is the very early stage that you are describing, especially when the jap itself begins to separate from breath.
I remembered about describing this to myself ''as if trying to catch a bird/hen and it keeps runining/jumping forward out of your grasp''

With what you describe, it also highlights the fact that simran stages don't have to run in any specific step by step order. For eg. you may hear naad before you taste amrit or vice versa.

From just my personal understanding and practice, I can only tell you the little I know.
In my experience and from what you are saying, certain chakras can begin to activate and awaken completely at random!
It seems your throat has began to awaken.
Now, with the approach and methods of saas graas,- saas saas- that some of us have used,.... I can only advise that you should take your dhyian down to navel area and do more saas saas..........I say this because....I think you should be putting more dhyian into the dhun and listening.

gurbani says ""dhun mein dhyan, dhyaan mein Jaaniya" ..............and then only by 'listening'...will the naad begin to manifest. Also, when you really put the dhyian on listening, then next steps will spontaneously begin to come to you at ease.

I strongly advise to not get lost and trapped into the mindset of ''Oh what shall I do next...or maybe I'm doing it all wrong."....attitude.....because I have fallen down this path many times !
Just keep the PYAAR for the satguru and beg him with love to lead the way.
Jap and immerse in the simran whilst listening. Listen and listen to your jap with dhyian and you will begin to go more internal and start hearing the sounds that will catch you by surprise. Acknowledge this as the Satguru, telling you that he is listening.

With what you are experiencing and describing;Be grateful, because he has already confirmed to you that HE is doing the Jap within you!!
    because gurbani says

    ਸਰਗੁਨ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਆਪਿ ॥
Sargun nirgun nirankār sunn samāḏẖī āp.
He possesses all qualities; He transcends all qualities; He is the Formless Lord. He Himself is in Primal Samaadhi.

    ਆਪਨ ਕੀਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੧॥
Āpan kī▫ā nānkā āpe hī fir jāp. ||1||
Through His Creation, O Nanak, He meditates on Himself. ||1||

I thought both gyan and dhyaan were important! Lets just see what Guru ji has to say on the subject.

parabh kai simran gi-aan Dhi-aan tat buDh.
In the remembrance of God are knowledge, meditation and the essence of wisdom.

naanak saadhoo sang jaagay gi-aan rang.
    O Nanak, in the Saadhu Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the love of divine knowledge is awakened;

bal budh gi-aan dhi-aan apnaa aap naam japaa-i-aa.
He blesses them with power, wisdom, knowledge and meditation; He Himself inspires them to chant His Name.

    vismaad naad vismaad vayd.
Wonderful is the sound current of the Naad, wonderful is the knowledge of the Vedas.

mat tat gi-aanaN kali-aan nidhaanaN har naam man ramnan.
The intellect receives the treasure, the knowledge of reality and supreme bliss, by repeating the Lord's Name in the mind.

    bidi-aa na para-o baad nahee jaan-o.
I do not read books of knowledge, and I do not understand the debates.

har gun kathat sunat ba-uraano. ||1||
I have gone insane, chanting and hearing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

Dhun meh dhi-aan, dhi-aan meh jaani-aa, gurmukh akath kahaanee.
The meditation is in the music, and knowledge is in meditation. Become Gurmukh, and speak the Unspoken Speech.

kaa-i-aa nagree ih man raajaa panch vaseh veechaaree.
The mind is the king of the city of the body; the five sources of knowledge dwell within it.

    saglee jaan karahu ma-udeefaa.
Let your daily worship be the knowledge that God is everywhere.

    achint hamaarai anhat vaajai.
Spontaneously, the Unstruck Melody of the Sound-current resounds within me.
    achint hamaarai gobind gaajai.
Spontaneously, the Lord of the Universe has revealed Himself to me.
    achint hamaarai man patee-aanaa.
Spontaneously, my mind has been pleased and appeased.
    nihchal Dhanee achint pachhaanaa.
I have spontaneously realized the Eternal, Unchanging Lord.
    achinto upji-o sagal bibaykaa.
Spontaneously, all wisdom and knowledge has welled up within me.

    gun naad dhun anand bayd.
The Glory of God is the Sound-current of the Naad, the Celestial Music of Bliss, and the Wisdom of the Vedas.
kathat sunat mun janaa mil sant mandlee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Speaking and listening, the silent sages and humble beings join together, in the Realm of the Saints. ||1||Pause||
gi-aan dhi-aan maan daan man rasik rasan naam japat tah paap khandlee.
Spiritual wisdom, meditation, faith and charity are there; their minds savor the Taste of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Chanting it, sins are destroyed.
jog jugat gi-aan bhugat surat sabad tat baytay jap tap akhandlee.
This is the technology of Yoga, spiritual wisdom, devotion, intuitive knowledge of the Shabad, certain knowledge of the Essence of Reality, chanting and unbroken intensive meditation.

gur parsaadee vidi-aa veechaarai parh parh paavai maan.
By Guru's Grace, contemplate spiritual knowledge; read it and study it, and you shall be honored.
aapaa maDhay aap pargaasi-aa paa-i-aa amrit naam.
Within the self, the self is revealed, when one is blessed with the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord.

1st bhavsagar (3 qualities of maya : rajo, sato, tamo)
Crossed over by listening to Gurmantra Gurshabad: WaheGuru

2nd bhavsagar is of the five elements Kal’s desh country jurisdiction (air, water, fire, earth, akash:space)
Crossed over by listening to Naam (sehaj dhune, sacha shabad, anhat shabad) unstruck sound current takes you to the door, dasam duar.

Cross dasam daur, tenth gate, door.
Listening to Naad enter Sacha Mahal, home of truth, mind as Jot, God.
It is all by the Grace of Waheguru that one listens to the sound and by God’s kirpa do we enter Sacha Mahal.

how does the love for another person develop? can we sit in a pose, do some yoga, breathing techniques to start loving someone?
it kinda just happens doesn't it? just develops from within...but maybe if we don;t spend much time with that person we don;t give the opportunity for that love to blossom...so we need to put some dyaan, attention to that person...

if we are already contemplating Waheguru, we already have his grace...so we have walked up to the stair case, and we need to decide to walk up or stay on that level.

also, if you have any Dukh/pain in your life...tell your Ego which makes your Dukh even worse...that it is not in Control of this life...
most people will get upset through Dukh, blame the world, get depressed because they realize they cannot control the life situation and their Ego gets them blaming the world and falling further into darkness...they look for solutions in the outer world 'only'...trying to understand why the dukh has occured and how to solve...

the true warrior uses the Dukh to surrender to Waheguru Will, to turn the Dukh into a blessing that helps destroys ones Ego...We fall at waheguru's feet (mentally), Ego reduces and the Love (waheguru) springs forth within your very being...

always good to keep some internal dialogue with Waheguru even if you think it is 'crazy'...keep reminding yourself that there is only really Waheguru....only Him...keep imagining that everyone around you is Waheguru and try to serve everyone equally...
the love will naturally develop...its guaranteed to

Gurmukh has said that there are various sounds that can be heard internally, for instance, when the breath (pavan) pierces through the Chakras it produces a ringing sound. However, these sound will not take you anywhere. I too in early stages was very confused to what i was hearing. It is referred to as Poan the Shabad. Good thing to know is that your mind is becoming introverted, keep dhyan on simran (Gurmantra), keep going deeper until eventually your mind will rise up the sukhmana channel to the tenth gate from where Shabad/Naam is heard.

There was a conversation that we have forgotten...
It happened between the lord and our soul. Your and mine, before we were sent to this world. It ran something like this:
Lord said, "I am sending you into one of the many worlds that exist. You will play a game. There is only one thing which is definite in this game. The time you go and the time you will return."
"You will be given one house (a body) to live in, and you shall know that the body is not the real YOU, but merely a bunch of flesh, bones and blood, like anybody else's, who is also a player in the game."
"There is but one valuable thing that you should treasure, which is far more precious than all the wealth and jewels put together. It is the counts of breath (swaas) that i allocate to you. These cannot be changed or increased for all the money or power in the world."
The soul asked, "And what do i have to do while I am there?"
Lord Replied, "It is pretty simple - remember me (your father) and remember your path back home, so that you may be able to come back and visit me, whenever you feel like. You are my child, and if you fail to recognize me eventually or if you forget me you will loose the game."
"Only if you win the game, you will be able to come back the day you die. The day you die - will be your final exam. That is the day i will find out if you did what you had to do in a lifetime (remember your real parent and visit your real home often during your stay). ..because if you did, there is nothing that can stop you from coming home straight as your body stops functioning in the worldly fashion. All the same, if you forget me, then the devils will take you away and put you into one of the deserving lives according to your deeds - animals, plants, birds, insects, etc."

Yes it is so true Harsharan
'Banee Guru, Guru ha Banee' - Guru Ram Das jee.

The Banee is the Guru, the Guru is the Banee'

When Great Guru, True Guru, SatGuru Nanak Dev jee was on His missionary tour (Udassi) in Siri Lanka, the king really became attatched to Guru Nanak and couldn't bear to see Satguru jee depart. The king asked how will I be blessed with your holy presence if you leave (i.e. how will I have your vision (Darshan) )? Satguru jee explained to him that Guru Nanak was not the physical body that the king had met. Guru Nanak was the shabad (the word of Waheguru jee). Of course the body was very blessed because it was the Shabad-Guru's outer covering, but the Guru was the shabad ( the Divine teacher is the word of Waheguru). Satguru jee told the king to become attatched to the shabad.

Ultimately a person gets so attatched to the Shabad that they reach a state called 'Shabad-surat da mel'also known as 'liv'. This means when the shabad and you are merged like water merging into the ocean. This is when you hear the unstruck melody and see Waheguru jee's light which brighter than hundreds and thousands of Suns. This is when you return home to Waheguru jee. This is the place from where the Shabd originated and this where it has brought you back.

    ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਵ ਹੋਈ
    Naam Vihoonaa Mukath Kiv Hoee
    नाम विहूणा मुकति किव होई
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, how can anyone find liberation?

    ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਵੇਰੋਧੁ ਸਰੀਰ
    Vin Naavai Vaerodhh Sareer

On devotion and the Lord´s will
    Raag Ramkali
Bani Sree Guru Arjun Dev Maharaj

In the following lines of Sachay Patshah Guru Arjun Dev Maharaj, Truth of spirituality is revealed to us, in very simple words.

    Firstly He says:

    ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਇਕੋ ਇਕੁ ਧਿਆਇ
Man Than Saas Giraas Prabh Eiko Eik Dhhiaae
    मनि तनि सासि गिरासि प्रभु इको इकु धिआइ
In your mind and body, with each breath and morsel of food, meditate on the One and only Lord God.

He says, to meditate on Him, one needs not to go anywhere.

Anywhere you may be, within your mind, which is within your body, do His Simran.

So with these words we can clearly see, He is not telling us to recite any religious sacred wordings, but just as simple as to recite His Name. This His remeberance, can be carried out, when one is eating, which is as good for drinking also.

Then He says, not only then, but even with each breath you take.

Now, the thing is, we take breaths while going to the supermarkets, to school, to work, while going to sleep, while at our shops, offices, in the plane, in the bus or car, whether inside or outside, whether in the day, or in the night, the list is endless.....

But the thing is to understand what Guru Jee is telling us.

In one word, He is saying, as long as you can breathe, and you are alive, wherever you maybe, never ever stop meditating in your mind. This also implies, one has not to wait for any so called auspicious time, to repeat His Name, but as soon as one reminds that one´s mind is free even for a second, that one should be spent in gathering the wealth of His Name. Because that place, that moment, that minute, that time spent in His rememberance, becomes sanctified, becomes blessed.....

Such is the magic of His wonderful Name .

    Then He beautifully says says:

    ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਰਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਖਸਮ ਰਜਾਇ
Naam Dhhiaaee Naam Oucharaa Naanak Khasam Rajaae
    नामु धिआई नामु उचरा नानक खसम रजाइ
Meditating on the Naam, and chanting the Naam, Nanak abides in the Will of his Lord and Master

Here He is telling us, that to please Wahiguru Akal Purukh, one need not do many different things, as He does not gets pleased by any of those our maanmat things.

Because He is one, and so, to abide in His will and make Him happy, lies our happiness as sikhs.

Because that is what one wants. To please our Lord Wahiguru. And pleasing Him, means remaining in His will. And His will for us, in the words of Guru Jee: is to meditate and chant His Naam.

    Just as simple as that.

Being a sikh in the true sense is walking on this this path marked by Guru Jee for us, not on our maanmat. And to repeat His name, we need not the aid of anybody nor anybody´s authorization.

He is nobody´s property.... He belongs to all in the same measure.

It is with Him, with whom we want to establish our relationship, what has any third party to do ?

If the lover(sikh) and the beloved(Wahiguru) are eager to meet, and as Wahiguru is not any earthly being, with whom, someone else must come and introduce us to Him, and allow the relationship of love to take place.....

No, nothing of that sort, no one sholud keep us away from Him for that time being, by becoming a barrier between us and Wahiguru.

The guiding hand is in the Bani, through the Bani. The world is blind, and so are the manmukhs.

The tat of Gurmat in short, is to merge in Wahiguru by loving Him, as soon as possible, and once again, this is only possible by His Simran, (not by any other means, no matter how hard and how often we may try, but it is all useless in His eyes), as it does go in accordance with His will, His bhaana, as seen above.

    Sat Sree Akal.
