Found this while reading a biography of a Thai Buddhist Monk.
"Meditation is a good means for making a clean break with the unseemly business of the kilesas. Meditation techniques are arguably somewhat difficult to practice, but that’s because they are designed to put pressure on the mind and bring it under control, much like trying to bring a monkey under control in order to tame it. Meditation techniques are actually methods for developing self-awareness. This means observing the mind which is not content to just remain still but tends instead to jump about like someone who’s been scalded with hot water. Observing the mind requires mindfulness to keep us aware of its movement. This is aided by using one of a number of Dhamma themes as an object of attention to keep the mind stable and calm during meditation. A very popular method and one that gives good results is mindfulness of breathing. Other popular themes include the use of a word such as “buddho”, “dhammo”, “sangho”,or kesã, lomã, nakhã, dantã, taco in forward and reverse order, or meditation on death, or whatever theme seems most suitable. The mind must be forced to stay exclusively with that object during meditation. Calm and happiness are bound to arise when the mind depends on a particular Dhamma theme as a good and safe object of attention.
What is commonly referred to as a ‘calm citta’ or a ‘citta integrated in samãdhi’ is a state of inner stability that is no longer associated with the initial object of attention, which merely prepared the citta by holding it steady. Once the citta has entered into samãdhi, there exists enough momentum for the citta to remain in this state of calm, independent of the preparatory object, whose function is temporarily discontinued while the citta rests peacefully. Later when the citta withdraws from samãdhi, if time permits, attention is refocused on the initial Dhamma theme. When this is practiced consistently with dedication and sustained effort, a mind long steeped in dukkha will gradually awaken to its own potential and abandon its unskillful ways. The struggle to control the mind, which one experiences in the beginning stages of training, will be replaced by a keen interest in the task at hand. The citta becomes unforgettably calm and peaceful once it enters samãdhi. Even if this happens only once, it will be an invigorating and indelible experience. Should it fail to occur again in subsequent attempts at meditation, an indescribable sense of loss and longing will linger in the citta for a long time. Only with further progress, as one becomes more and more absorbed in increasingly subtler states of calm, will the frustration of losing the initial state of calm be forgotten."

We all on this path and learning together, here is my 2 cents- step by step process is not essential for everyone especially if one has tasted the direct path -grabbed narsingh directly (-narsingh symbolism of pure live atma-pure awareness) available all the time to everyone or narsingh(pure awareness) have grabbed you, even if its not essential then  baby step by step process is highly recommended and safe for everyone as my veers lucky, soulfinder and sat pointed out- worked so hard/ lived example expereince on this thread to help others as there are some really good reasons for that-
    - Direct path alone is absolutely dangerous (living on razor edge sword its like hanging up a thread in high altitude)  its not childs pay, its not yogi play its matter of grace but it will deprived you of everything-sleep you be in gyan jagrath, tired during day- while at job, cant funciton in gristh jevan, basic relationship, anti social, immense amount of bairaag, no hobbies, you be live  awake but dead -hapazard awakening is very hard and emotionally and body tolling but dead while on this direct path,  our sikh mahapursh would never propagate direct path as a general rule because there is no fall back- there are no steps, there is no grounding,  when you fall  you fall- miserably than try again again there are no stages advancement either you get swallowed alive in surrender devotion to atma or live it directly via gyan and become one with it or you not. 1 OR 0 non dual smadhi point.
    - There is saying you are entire ocean in a drop, imagine entire atomic atma grabbing this empty vessel- called body, without any preparations your thoughts/mind/ego be obliterated eaten alive by immense force of chaitna/Narsingha- pure awareness/consciouness. It effects your way of being with paradigm shift in much more more profound way  will take time reintegrate pure alive awareness back in your body fully once it does then there is harmony. I was also explained this by sant jagjit singh harkhowale in a similiar way.
    - Direct path or not, everyone needs grounding in our sikh tradition- sargun bhakti-nine form of devotion towards sri guru granth sahib ji, shabad surat.
Thats why sri guru granth sahib ji and our sikh mahapursh have given an framework- bhagti- sargun, seva, gurbani  vahiguru mool mantar mantar abhyas kirtan, shabad surat with direct aim to get to direct path step by step slowly,  its very safe for everyone. One can also tries the direct path (bhagti of self) while in those states while you have build up the ladder via- bhagti, seva, kirtan, shabad surat- fall back/grounding- No problem!, Fall back is safe you are back in body - senses, where you also feel bliss of kirtan, nine different forms of seva of sri guru granth sahib ji, shabad dhun then try try again slowly, sure its absolutely frustrating (especially if there is direct path-nirgun chaitan bhram -LIVE/ALL THE TIME-available moment to moment for everyone as backdrop ) you need pateince/steele nerve but trust me is safe, safe and safe for seekers especially in this western world where you gotta do your job, feed your family, raise your kids.
Sant baba isher singh ji rara sahib barsi coming up, i invite everyone who respect saints to read ishavar amalok, framework is given there.

Wjkk wjkf veer ji. Dass usually reads panj banis nitnem banis any time i usually like whether its morning or evening depending on my mood. I do know that sri rehras sahib can be done before 11pm as i heard in katha. There is no limit as dass has had experience with the number of banis to do if you wish to do more than panj banis is fine as its good to make connection with guru sahib ji.
In regards to shabad hazare dass has never read it as its usually best to do the paath at amritvela or before 10am i think can be done.

    SSA Guru ka Daas jee,
Please bear in mind that everything that happens, does not happen  just like that without any apparent reason though beyond our understanding, but only due to our very own past karam, not because we are doing something wrong now.
Your present devotion towards Waheguru is only to get strength to face any ups and downs in life, for He is our true friend and anchor at all times.
This is a common mistake which most of us make, for we think that if we devote ourselves to Him, nothing bad will happen to us.
The law of karma, is His also His  hukum, which nobody can alter, it is only that we do not see nor know the burden of karmas we are carrying on our heads.
Waheguru is also known Dayal Purukh, He is all mercy and love, He does not deliberately send us any pain or discomfort,  and to know Him,  we have to arise within ourselves by doing the bhakti which takes us within, there where He is, once within, and having His darshan, then only we get that finer understanding, and then only will we able to say : tera bhaana meetha laagay, then only our faith in Him will be strong like a rock, meanwhile we will be quite shaky whenever we receive the blows of our own karmas,  nevertheless we should stay at His door at all times and circumstances , in that lies our welfare.
    Stay blessed.

Shri Waheguru Ji Da Khalsa, Shri Waheguru Ji De Fateh,

Satsriakal to all my brothers and sisters on this forum. I hope everyone is safe and sound along with their family and friends. I needed some advice or suggestions from my fellow Sikhs. I do my daily required prayers, I try to stay positive, I do socialize and try to stay happy but my life has been continuously troublesome and negative. Please see below of how it’s negative and need tips suggestions to improve my life:

    1. My father passed away when I was 6 years old, was attached with him a lot.
    2. Struggle in family disputes, arguments, struggle in studies
    3. Betrayal from family and friends
    4. Continuously obstacles keep happening no matter how hard I try to succeed in life
    5. Wife left forever so ended up in divorce.
    6. No siblings it’s just me and mom the house feels empty.
    7. Attempting re-marriage but women these days either have behavior problem or attitude not good, or they want to pressurize the guy in their own ways.

I am not understanding that despite my devotion to Waheguru / Gurus / Banis why is everything negative happening and no good outcome happening? I don’t drink I don’t smoke I don’t get angry but there is just something wrong somewhere something is not right

harsharan000 got a reaction from Guransh SIngh in Sikh preachers should talk about Hell.
Preachers may or may not talk of the hell.....

But Guru Jee for sure tells us that:
    ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਇ ਲਇਐ ਨਰਕਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
Naao Thaeraa Nirankaar Hai Naae Laeiai Narak N Jaaeeai ||
Your Name is the Fearless Lord; chanting Your Name, one does not have to go to hell.

    Further on He tells us:
    ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧਾ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਏ ॥
Jam Dhar Badhhaa Chottaa Khaaeae ||
Bound and gagged at Death's Door, they are brutally beaten.
    ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਸਾਥੀ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
Bin Naavai Ko Sang N Saathhee Mukathae Naam Dhhiaavaniaa ||4||
Without the Name, there are no companions or friends. Liberation comes only by meditating on the Naam

    Moreover, again He tells us:
    ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
Jamakaal This Naerr N Aavai Jo Har Har Naam Dhhiaavaniaa ||6||
The Messenger of Death does not draw near those who meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

He clearly warns us, that only thse who meditate on His Nam, shall be saved, for even the messenger of death dare not come near them.
We do not have to be very intelligent, thus to understand, that those who do not do this bhakti as seen in the verses above, shall be drowned in the terrible hell of the wheel  of "chaurasee ka ckakar" where only severe pain and agongy exists.
What other bigger hell can there be? Guru Sahiban do not want to frighten us with te reality of hell, but rather motivate and uplift us, with  the gyan of ultimate Truth, His sachaa Nao.
Life by itself is a hell,  for we are already away from Him since so long, and alas, we do nothing to make the most of this golden opportunity of human birth,  by running after all other external practices, except that one, of the jaap of the gurparasd of His Nam, as per throughout the Bani.

    Stay blessed.

It is very true what you say, but I would also add, that hardly anyone either talks about Waheguru, Nam, Shabad, and Sach Khand.
Gurbani clearly and repeatedly tells us what to do in order to please Him, thus get His kirpa and cross the Mahabhavsagar. Then, who is to be blamed?
Kalyug is in full force, and if we do not profit ourselves from the Light of Truth as described in the Bani, we are likely to get derailed.
It is by taking the Medicine that one gets "cured", not by reading, or repeat it memorizedly, nor looking at the prescription; and no matter even if one does so 24/7.
On the other side, just by taking the 2 or 3 doses per day, as prescribed, one regains good health, which in our terms is "sanity".

    Welcome brother bhattman,
from your words, I can only say you are blessed with His grace.
Regarding the importance of simran, Guru Jee beautifully describes it in Sukhmani Sahib , if you read it with attention and try to sip each boond of Amrit in it,  you will be amazed about the depth and the anmol  value contained in it.
His simran, is the key to true spirituality, or better said, is the very key which unlocks all  obstructions encountered between us and Him.
Right from the begining Fifth Patshahee tells us:
    ਸਿਮਰਉ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥
Simaro Simar Simar Sukh Paavo ||
Meditate, meditate, meditate in remembrance of Him, and true everlasting happiness.

He says that, if we do His simran, we shall find true everlasting happiness.
We may ask ourselves , why or how can that be possible?
The answer is, that by His simran, we merge in Him, thus we are free from the cycle of births and deaths, as we merge in the Infinite Ocean of everlasting  bliss of Satnam.

    Further on He tells us:
    ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਗਰਭਿ ਨ ਬਸੈ ॥
Prabh Kai Simaran Garabh N Basai ||
Remembering God, one does not have to enter into the womb again.
    ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਜਮੁ ਨਸੈ ॥
Prabh Kai Simaran Dhookh Jam Nasai ||
Remembering God, the pain of death is dispelled.
    ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥
Prabh Kai Simaran Kaal Pareharai ||
    Remembering God, death is eliminated.

Here He clearly tells us, that by His simran, the chains by which we are strongly tied in the endless wheel of 84, or of the births and deaths, are cut off, thus the soul never ever enters a mother´s womb, nor any other life form.
We may ask, what are those chains?
Well those chains are all of our karmas whether god or bad, our vikars,  the PUNJ CHOR, our past sanskaras .....  which are deeply engraved on our minds.
There is no such cleanser which can wipe all that dirt on the mind, except for His simran alone, as seen in the following verse:
    ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Prabh Kai Simaran Man Kee Mal Jaae ||
In the remembrance of God, the filth of the mind is removed.

Regarding His simran,  the Bani  also tells us:
Jin Har japeeya, se Har hoeeya
In the verse above, Guru Jee is revealing us the technique, the jugtee, by which we ordinary mortals can merge in Him, and become one with Him without any distiction.
Isn´t that something great and beyond any description?
Well, that is the apaar mahima of His simran, by which, we stones can be ferried across, and become one with Him.

I hope, your queries of the importance of engaging in His simran are somehow satisfied; anyway, go through Sukhmani Sahib throughly without any rush, and by His grace, all your queries may come to end.
    Stay blessed.
    SSA.

" The following excepts are from is from Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji's Diary:
Types of Naam: There are 2 types of Naam:
Japa (Varan Atmak Bani/Naam): It is the Outer Sound Principle. It is also known as the language of the Pranas or the vital airs for it depends on different types of vibrations in the air. All these types of Japas give solace of varying degrees and one gets peace of mind of a temporary nature only, because the various bodily chakra involved in them are of a lower order, situated below Third Eye. Varn-Atmak words pave the way to Dhun-Atmak Shabd and are thus essential aids in stilling the mind of oscillations, purging it of all impurities and rendering it capable of apprehending the Dhun-Atmak current within. The Varn-Atmak words may and do differ because of lingual differences, but the Dhun-Atmak Shabd being the Life-Principle of the spirit or soul is the same throughout. It can be further sub-divided into 4 subdivisions: Baikhri: These are labial sounds or sounds which are uttered with the aid of tongue and lips. It is when God's Name is recited with tongue and lips. It is the first technique and holds 1 unit in power. Madhma: These are guttural sounds which are produced in the throat or at the back or root of the tongue and palate. It is when God's Name is recited within the throat but without the use of tongue. This is 10 times the power of Baikhri. Pashyanti: These are sounds which originate from the heart center. It is when God's Name is recited within the heart but without the use of tongue. This is 100 times the power of Baikhri. Para: These are sounds which arise through vibrations from the navel center. It is when God's Name is recited within the navel but without the use of tongue. This is 1000 times the power of Baikhri. Ajapa (Dhun Atmak Bani/Naam): This is the Eternal Sound Current reverberating endlessly in every living thing. It is an Unwritten Law and an Unspoken Language. It becomes audible, however, when a spirit rises above body-consciousness. Here one has just to listen to the all-pervading Naam or Shabd. As this Sound cannot be expressed in any symbolic form, it is expressionless. It may be contacted above the sensory plane, behind the centre of the two eyebrows. Here one starts hearing Anhad Shabad. It generally referred to as Naam down to Trikuti; and below Daswan Dwar, where the causal region extends, It is called the Trigun Bani, or Sound within the regions of the three gunas. It is also described as Brahm Janjalla, the network of Brahm, the God of creation. This Trigun Bani or Brahm Janjalla is still within the domain of Kal or Dissolution and hence must disintegrate. HE is beyond Japa, Ajapa, and Anhad." Guys, you really don't want to fall in this entrapment.
The Mind is too easy to tempt into different directions. Grabbing tips from x,y and z will only make the mind race and prevent it form stabilizing.   One's daily conduct has to be done with a steady mind.  How you go about in your day reflects how easily you can go into sehaj and steadiness in simran.
Keep it simple, have faith and be prepared to give your matt at all times. Jumping around with a monkey mind, going from x,y, z will only weaken your hold over the mann.
You must have complete faith in the EK that you decide to follow. No faith, means no progress.
