Don't want to say anything wrong, but i think he means that only knowledge of gurbani is like nothing. We have so many granthis, lecturers in uni, organisations' presidents, SGPC members etc, they all have knowledge but they don't practice naam or gurbani, and I won't hesitate to say that they don't believe 100% what they know.
I have learnt how to practice naam but I don't do it, and instead carry on sleeping late in the morning. Does my knowledge means everything ? would it take me anywhere ? No.  I do love gurbani, and it is the love which would help me reach the spirituality heights. It is the guilt in my heart which would mean anything to Waheguru. I do fight everyday to come over my obstacles, I win, I lose, but carry on rolling in the hope that one day...
For example, a student doing PhD in gurbani would not become a saint.  One has to put 100% faith in guru's baani and practice/appreciate/love/adore day/night.
Bhul chuk Maaf, but I think I understand what he means!

    Pen Jee,
I am going to answer your points in "black" above.
    * The real Amrit is got within,by the constant jaap of His Name, which washes away all our karmas and thus make us free from maya and we get merged into Waheguru.
    * The 2 souls joining in marriage is not spiritual but at a physical level to settle our karmic acconts, our True husband is Waheguru Himself, and to Him we have to please by chanting His Name, then as a Father, as an Husband, He will give us shelter at His Lotus feet, it is to Him for whom we have to look for and please Him, He alone is pure, true and perfect.
    * Do not expect the world to do anything good, if you have realized that you have to do His bhakti, do it by yourself, He Himself will pull you, that is it.
Fulfil your duties as mother, as a wife, as a worker, whichever field it maybe, just give the world what it needs from you, then give the remaining time, mind, heart and soul to our True Sachay Patshah, Waheguru, the source of all comfort and bliss.
By attaching ourselves to His Lotus Feet through meditation, can we ever be at peace with ourselves for once and all.

Bramacharaya is a very high state of mind, and for that one has to do a lot of kamaee. It is not just saying I will do so and get it, it is to fight with the mind on the internal level with the weapon of Naam alone.
That is the right weapon to knock out the mind, for with other methods and weapons, the mind can not be subdued, for as seen in the history, it has defeated big rishis, munis and sanyasis.
So to deal properly with this enemy of kaam, one needs the correct weapon, which is His sacred Name as per Bani, all other efforts are futile and a waste of time.
And also do not remain in delusion that being a brahmacaharya is enough to meet Him. What about the other remaining 4 thieves?
So once you use correctly the weapon of Naam to defeat the mind, then not 1, nor 2, or 3 thieves will be defeated, but all the 5 of them , that also at the same time.
As sikhs we are at all not aware of the spiritual wealth given to us through the Bani if applied correctly, we are handcuffed by the blind  and we are guided by them.
We have to free ourselves from all the chains put on us since we are born, and hold tightly to the pure teachings of the paviter Bani, only then can we truly profit ourselves as souls.
Your intentions to get the daat of Naam from a mahapurukh, is the start of the path leading to Him

Thanks for your overall positive message. However, I have heard from many Sants, Brahmgyanis and that extreme bhakti is only possible in youth. In old age the body does not have enough energy to do bhakti. I am now in my 40s. In my 20s I could sit for 2.5 hours in a posture. Now, I cannot sit for more than 1 hour and my legs start hurting.
Also there is a shabad by Bhagat Kabir in SGGS about the same subject.
What do you think, do I have a chance in my 40s?

Thanks once again for the positivity. Do you live in a western country? I am asking this because I am living in one. Do you think brahmgyaan is possible in western country or should I leave back to India. I feel that in India there are more Gurudwaras, more sangat, more brahmgyanis you can visit and hence the opportunities are plenty.

Just be aware that for one engaging in His bhakti, is more a pull from His side than any of our biggest efforts, thus if He himself pulls us, which power or who can stop us?
So please do not let your mind get you confused, for the jahaaz of His Naam which will ferry us across, has nothing to do with age, gender, nationality or anything alike, but just to sit comfortably and let the pilot of Guru Jee take us across.
Why are you worried of old age? What guarantee is that you will reach there?
In your hands you only have today and now, so make the most of it.
He has given us 24 hours in a day, just keep balance, give the world its time, but also save time for our heavenly Father Akal Purukh and establish a tight relationship with Him, based on love, faith and devotion.
So deifinetely, now you do have all the chances to meet Him,  try and make the most in them.

Read a katha somewhere where mahaan brahmgyanis saying that old age is full of illness and young age is the age for meditation and bhakti. I feel I have spent my entire youth in worldly career pursuits and did not spend any time on meditation / bhakti. Now, I feel my entire life has been wasted, bcoz in my early 20s I had extreme passion for bhakti but then due to worldly career pressure I did not pursue. I am now well into my 40s... does this mean by boat has now sailed away and I cannot do the intense bhakti anymore. Can I get udhaar in this lifetime?
Please don't try to give positive answer and try to encourage me. Please give me REAL TRUTHFUL answer, even if it is negative . ..I wanna hear it.

In my early 20s I could sit in one asana from 2.5 - 3 hours motionless. I had reached a state where no thought existed, time use to stop, breath use to stop for a couple seconds. I dont know what it was. But it was like Sunn. Then I married, kids and for 20 years I was engaged in worldly activities. Now I can hardly sit motionless for 1 hour. I lost all the kamaiye.

Every other thing apart from only one Him is a trap.
One does not get spiritually enlightened at particular planes, it is with our constant association with the Truth of Nam, through simran that we get enlightened throughly.
Do not expect much, only wish strongly to be able to receive His meher/kirpa in order to merge in Him, for until He Himself pulls us out, and we hold on tightly to Him only, with love and devotion,  we can never ever acheive anything, in terms of our union with Him.

There will always be failure, if we do not abide by the teachings of Guru Sahiban in the Bani, and corrupt them with our manmukhta and agyanta, thus ignoring the truth on one side, and move further with untruth, we have to listen and get hold on to those who have eyes: Guru Jee, not the blind ignorant manmukhs with their own fashioned philosophies.
Only Gurbani is Truth, all else is futile, if we do  not abide by the teachings in it

SunnySingh reacted to harsharan000 in Sikhi compared to Advaita Vedanta
    Welcome PhunkeyPhish.
    a) I would say, many paths have a similar start, but is only the farthest reach which counts.
For example one goes to a shopping mall, and just imagine, on the first floor only silver is found, on the second floor only gold is found, and on the third floor there are only diamonds, but to reach each floor one has to take an escalator or go by stairs, which is common to start with for going any of the three floors. It all depends what one is looking for, and if one is to pay the price of it
In a similar way, many paths may seem fine and similar, but is by great good fortune(kirpa), one reaches the highest goal.

    b) As for what I have seen in the teachings of Bhagat Jan, Guru Sahiban and Gurmukhs, the main and essential difference between sikhee and other paths, is that in Sikhee, all and everything revolves around the Guru, without whom, nothing can be acheived.
Then also, there is no need of variety of different spiritual entities which do exist, and for us as sikhs they are very much respected, but not at all sought, for our goal and destiny is only:  Ik Oankar Satnam.
    That is it.
For example, in Gurbani it says:
Bin Satgur kinnay na paayo, bin Satgur kinnay paaya.
This means, without Satguru nobody ever obtained anything(Waheguru Akal Purukh), and without the Satguru nobody ever obtained Him(Waheguru Akal Purukh).
Sikhee means, a path of discipleship, so naturally if there is  disciple, there has to be a Guru, otherwise it is not sikhee, it can be anything but not sikhee as per teachings in the Gurbani.
In other paths howsoever respectable, everything depends on one´s efforts or actions, in Sikhee, one has to surrender oneself to the Guru and depend alone on His grace, for the inner ptah is so narrow and dark, that in reference to that Guru, the second Patshahee Sree Guru Angad Dev Maharaj says:
    ਜੇ ਸਉ ਚੰਦਾ ਉਗਵਹਿ ਸੂਰਜ ਚੜਹਿ ਹਜਾਰ ॥
Jae So Chandhaa Ougavehi Sooraj Charrehi Hajaar ||
If a hundred moons were to rise, and a thousand suns appeared,

    ਏਤੇ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋਦਿਆਂ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੋਰ ਅੰਧਾਰ ॥੨॥
Eaethae Chaanan Hodhiaaan Gur Bin Ghor Andhhaar ||2||
Even with such light, there would still be pitch darkness without the Guru. ||2||
He says, that if 100 moons were to arise and shine in he skies, and in addition there were 1000 suns also, yet inspite of that refulgence and brightness, there would be still utter darkness.

*Moreover Guru Nanak also emphasizes on the supreme importance and the need of such a Guru, as seen in the following 2 verses.
    ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਸੁਚੇਤ ॥
Naanak Guroo N Chaethanee Man Aapanai Suchaeth ||
O Nanak, those who do not think of the Guru, and who think of themselves as clever,

    ਛੁਟੇ ਤਿਲ ਬੂਆੜ ਜਿਉ ਸੁੰਞੇ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਖੇਤ ॥
Shhuttae Thil Booaarr Jio Sunnjae Andhar Khaeth ||
Shall be left abandoned in the field, like the scattered sesame

So you see, it is only by being in the company of Satguru, or call it Shabad Guru, can one reach that abode of eternity and changless Truth of Satnam.
At other place the Bani tells us: Nanak,  Naam  jahaaz hae, jinee cahreeya se utareeya paar.
With this it is telling us, o Nanak, the Nam is the vessel or aircraft, in which whosoever boards on is carried across.
This Naam refered in the Bani is the Shabad Guru also, for by holding on to the pallav of  this Guru, one is ferried across, it does not matter how many thousand other practices one may incurr into, but if one has not got hold of Naam, one is left behind in the painful cycle of births and deaths.
If one goes through the Gurbani with attention, it shows nothing but instructions to love and follow diligently and faithfully the teachings of Guru Sahiban.
Just to summarize in a way Sikhee, it could well be:
Jin Har japeeya se Har hoeeya.
He/She whosoever repeated His holy Name and manifested it within, becomes one with Him without any distinction.
I would suggest you to go to the depths of the utterly sweet and beautiful, uncomparable and unfathoamble Gurbani, and by His grace reach the highest goal.
    Stay blessed.
    Sat Sree Akal.

Being Born Female Is Karmic Punishment?
No, it is not and it can never be a punishment.

As long as spirituality is concerned in the eyes of Guru Jee, it is purity and love for Waheguru alone which counts.
Let us see what does Guru Jee tells us in this respect:

    ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਚੁ ॥
    Naanak Sach Dhhiaaein Sach ||
O Nanak, true are those who meditate on the True One.

    ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੇ ਸੁ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚੁ ॥੧॥
Jo Mar Janmae S Kach Nikach ||1||
Those who are subject to birth and death are totally false.

Guru Jee does not make distinctions on the containers/shapes, sizes nor colors, for it is the contents( soul purity) that counts in His eyes.

Yesterday night, after doing Kirtan Sohila and first paure (ardass) of chandi di vaar (pritham bahguti simar ke..), I was feeling a little scared, because I didn't want to see one in real life. Only during the day I want to see them lol. Then I started doing Brahm Kavach with the intention of protecting myself and attacking them straight up. I did it 3x times. The first time I started feeling scared, I had my eyes closed, but I wanted to keep them open. I still kept them close for the most part, and I was also getting the bir ras feeling at the same time. Your tip of imagining your astral body as a bright lion really helped. Then I recited this shabad; a couple of times.
I was feeling good then, like I won and  I powered through the fear. I then did 2 mins or so of waheguru simran, to thank him. At this point I was feeling no fear, even when I was trying to imagine them, no fear at all. And for a little bit I was feeling like you do, seeing god in everyone, and just feeling the love and no fear.

National child abuse inquiry refused to probe Rotherham and Rochdale sex-grooming scandals over fears of looking racist
Victim Sammy Woodhouse accused IICSA of burying gang-related sex abuse 'They are trying to bury what happened in Rotherham and Rochdale' she said 'Cowardly' reluctance was shown in its inquiry into mass offending in the towns

The national inquiry into child abuse was 'scared of being called racist' and refused to investigate some of Britain's most notorious sex-grooming scandals, it has been revealed.
Key witnesses were also barred from giving evidence, victims and experts in the inquiry have claimed, amid accusations of 'cowardly' reluctance to examine mass offending in Rotherham and Rochdale.
In those towns, they say, was a pattern of group crimes in which men of Pakistani heritage were over represented, and the reluctance stemmed from not wanting to face accusations of being racist, The Times reported.
Sammy Woodhouse, a victim in Rotherham, claimed the heads of the inquiry 'have not placed survivors at the forefront' of their investigations, and are 'selective in what they decide to look at,' according to newspaper.

Sammy Woodhouse, a victim in Rotherham, claimed the heads of the inquiry 'have not placed survivors at the forefront' of their investigations, saying 'the inquiry was trying to bury what happened in places like Rotherham and Rochdale because they're scared of being called racist'

'If you are going to get to the root of gang-related child sexual exploitation you need to go right to the heart of it,' she added. 'They are trying to bury what happened in places like Rotherham and Rochdale because they're scared of being called racist.'
Sarah Chapman, Rotherham's campaigning MP and Nazir Azfal, a former chief crown prosecutor who brought justice to the Rochdale sex-grooming gang, are among those appalled by the inquiry's failure to hear evidence.
A former Greater Manchester police officer who exposed the alleged cover-up of sex-grooming crimes in the region accused the national inquiry of being 'too frightened to open the hornet's nest'.
The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) began in 2015 and has so far cost £143 million. It is trying to establish why there was an 'institutional failure to protect children' from abuse.
In its investigation into exploitation of children by 'organised networks', the inquiry has looked at the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church, investigating many of the worst-known scandals involving such organisations.
The organised networks arm on the inquiry was also expected to examine the most infamous cases of group grooming and exploitation.

Big trials over the past ten years have exposed a previously hidden crime model involving the targeting and sexual abuse of teenage girls by groups of men, largely of south Asian origin.
Groups in Rotherham, Rochdale, Oxford, Leicester, High Wycombe, Dewsbury, Peterborough, Halifax, Newcastle upon Tyne, Telford and Burnley have been prosecuted since 2011 for sex-grooming.
From late September, the IICSA held two weeks of public hearings for its 'organised networks' investigation, with the final day for closing submissions set to take place on October 29.
However, it decided not to hear evidence from survivors or those with knowledge of the crime pattern, and instead chose to select six areas of England and Wales - St Helens, Tower Hamlets in east London, Swansea, Durham, Bristol and Warwickshire.

The reason given was that these areas 'represent a range of sizes, demographics and institutional practices', but none of the six areas has witnessed a major prosecution of a south Asian sex-grooming gang.
Furthermore, The Times reports that the 2011 national census found the proportion of the population that is of Pakistani origin is lower than the national average.
Henrietta Hill, QC, who is the lead council of the inquiry, told the hearing on it first day that after the inquiry 'carefully considered the extent to which, if at all, it should focus on areas such as Rochdale, Rotherham and Oxford', the IICSA decided it would be 'more appropriate' to focus on different areas.
The IICSA is investigating claims against local authorities, religious organisations, the Armed Forces, public and private institutions, and people in the public eye.
Following the death of BBC presenter Jimmy Savile in 2011, hundreds of people came forward to say he had abused them as children.
It was established in 2015, following claims from a complainant known as 'Nick' of a murderous Westminster paedophile ring connected to Parliament.
Nick, whose real name is Carl Beech, was later discredited and jailed for 18 years for what a judge called his 'cruel and callous' lies.

Huddersfield becomes latest in a series of British towns and cities rocked by Asian sex gang investigations
Rotherham - The issue of child abuse in the town first came to light in 2010 when five Asian men were jailed for sexual offences against under-age girls.
A 2014 inquiry found there were more than 1,400 victims of grooming and sex exploitation in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.
Rochdale - The trial of nine men for grooming young white girls for sex attracted widespread public outrage and sparked a national debate when they were convicted in 2012.
The gang received jail sentences of between four and 19 years for offences committed against five girls - aged between 13 and 15 - in and around Rochdale between 2008 and 2010.
The case returned to the public consciousness earlier this year when the BBC broadcast its Three Girls drama based on the experiences of some of the victims.
Newcastle - A total of 17 men and one woman were convicted of, or admitted, charges including rape, supplying drugs and inciting prostitution, in Newcastle last year.
Older men preyed on immature teenagers who were plied with cocaine, cannabis, alcohol or mephedrone (M-Cat), then raped or persuaded into having sexual activity at parties known as 'sessions'.
The case raised huge controversy after a convicted rapist was paid almost £10,000 of taxpayers' money to spy on parties where under-age girls were intoxicated and sexually abused.
Northumbria Police launched a major investigation after receiving information from social workers and initially spoke to 108 potential victims. Over the course of four trials, 20 young women gave evidence covering a period from 2011 to 2014.
Oxford - A group of men who abused teenage girls in a vehicle they called the 's**gwagon' were jailed for a total of nearly 90 years in June this year.
The men - aged 36 to 48 - befriended vulnerable girls as young as 13 before plying them drink and drugs at 'parties' in Oxford.
The eight men - branded 'predatory and cynical' by a judge - were jailed for between seven and a half and fifteen years each.
Bristol - Some 13 Somali men were jailed for more than a total of more than 100 years after they were convicted in 2014 of running an inner city sex ring.
Victims as young as 13 were preyed upon, sexually abused and trafficked across Bristol to be passed around the men's friends for money.
Aylesbury - Six men were jailed in 2015 for grooming vulnerable under-age white girls between 2006 and 2012.
The Old Bailey heard victims would be plied with alcohol and forced to perform sex acts for as little as 'the price of a McDonalds'.
Peterborough - A total of 10 men were convicted of child sex crimes in the town, including 'predatory' restaurant boss Mohammed Khubaib.
He was jailed for 13 years at the Old Bailey in 2015, after he was found guilty of forcing a 14-year-old girl to perform a sex act on him and nine counts of trafficking for sexual exploitation, involving girls aged from 12 to 15, between 2010 and 2013.
Telford - Earlier this year, Telford became the latest town to become the focus of the now sadly familiar stories of abuse.
An investigation concluded that around 1,000 children could have been sexually exploited in the Shropshire town over a 40-year period, leading to calls for a public inquiry.
