Fair point N30 but the focus of the discussion is let's say one is doing simran of Gurmantar and you hear the sounds. Obviously a transition point comes when you make the switch to the other one. The meditative practice becomes dhyan avasta I believe, when rather than doing mental jaap you focus on just listening to these sounds. The next question arises how to navigate the sounds. Is it by listening to the one sound at different positions or attaching oneself to different sounds in sequence, in essence climbing the ladder, or a combination of the two.
Maybe these are advanced questions and we can't get these answers on forums or books.

Sat1176 got a reaction from Premi in How is Moolmantar Jaap different from Waheguru Simran ?
There is a lot of gyan in mool mantar that can be reflected upon for contemplation, but I don't think you can call that meditiation. For meditation you need to only allow 1 persistent thought. Never the less if you do jap the mool mantar with full focus on the words it will aid you in achiving some level of mind stillness.
One could also use mool mantar if one was practising to increase the length of the swas both inhale and exhale. Saying 1 round of mool mantar will take longer the just saying waheguru. You would really have to stretch out waaaaaaahheeeeguuuuuuurruuuu to cover the same time span.

A single word mantar is better for meditation because it should be used as a single point of focus and one word will give your mind less chance to engage in other actions apart from just listening because you do not have to worry about what is the next word to repeat in sequence. It is a repitition of only one sound that you do with full attention.
A single word mantra can be easily synchronised with the breath and Wahe-Guru can be broken into two parts. First half Wahe for inhale and second part Guru for exhale.
The is a great example given in Sri Guru Granth Sahib about churning the milk to extract the butter. Once has to first know how in the olden days this was achived and what utensil was used.
Ang 728 by Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
Wash the vessel (body), sit down and anoint it with fragrance; then, go out and get the milk.
bhaaNdaa Dho-ay bais Dhoop dayvhu ta-o dooDhai ka-o jaavhu.

Add the rennet of clear consciousness to the milk of good deeds, and then, free of desire, let it curdle.
doodh karam fun surat samaa-in ho-ay niraas jamaavahu.

Chant the Name of the One Lord.
    japahu ta ayko naamaa.

Let your mind be the handles, and then churn it, without sleeping (it is said we are sleeping in the 3 gunas of maya which also constituate our thoughts. To focus on the name of the lord is said to be when we are awake).
ih man eetee haath karahu fun naytara-o need na aavai.

If you chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord ,with your tongue, then the curd will be churned. In this way, the Ambrosial Nectar is obtained.
rasnaa naam japahu tab mathee-ai in biDh amrit paavhu.

Wash your mind in the pool of Truth, and let it be the vessel of the Lord; let this be your offering to please Him.
man sampat jit sat sar naavan bhaavan paatee taripat karay.

That humble servant who dedicates and offers his life, and who serves in this way, remains absorbed in his Lord and Master.
poojaa paraan sayvak jay sayvay inH biDh saahib ravat rahai.

Watch the video to understand how the milk is being churned to extract the butter.

The left right pulling action the person is using which is equivalent to our inhale and exhaling breath. Add into the inhale/exhale the gurmantra wahe/guru. This could not easily be achived if mool mantar was being used.

Sas Giras simran jugti is explained very easily if you understand and relate it to the above video and lines.
Sit, focus the mind on the sound of your own voice as you say wahe on inhaling and guru on exhaling.

    Copied from a Naam abhiyaasi:
“” I sing Naam by singing in one breath as many times as I can.
For Naam Jaap, I give a small pause between Wahe(Wah) and Guru.
With voice: breathe in, then pronounce Wah Guru and breathe out. One time for each breath.
Without voice: pronounce Wah Guru while breathing in and Wah Guru while breathing out, or Wah while breathing in and Guru while breathing out, or hold the feeling of Wah Guru without saying Wah Guru.
Always breath normally without putting any stress.
I taste sweetness and cold feeling on lips, mouth, and upper potion of nose when Naam Jaap and reciting Gurbani.

When I was asked to do a shabad jaap the vidi was to put a glass of water near by, say the jaap loud enough so that the sound reaches the water. After finishing the jaap drink the shabad amrit.

If doing jaap out aloud put your dhyan just in front of your mouth where you can hear the sound. Make the mind sit in that spot and listen to what comes out. You will notice when your doing it with 100% focus or when your just japping with the mouth but the mind has gone off in flights of thought. Bring it back to this spot and make it sit and listen.

Am sitting here at work and my mind feels really still and stable. When I close my eyes and just internally jap I can feel this kind of void forming in my chest, very difficult to explain. It's a very deep sensation and the most soothing feeling I've ever experienced. The tranquility seems really blissful. Really wish I wasn't at work right now and I could just close my eyes and just sit there in this dark cave like place.

For the past week I've been feeling really angry and short tempered. I'm observing intense resistance within my mind wanting to partake in Simran. When I try and read SGGS my vision is going blurry and my eyes don't want to focus on the words so I read. On a positive note Kaami thoughts & desires seem to have reduced and don't have the same appeal anymore but Krodh is puting on a right battle. Odd because generally I'm quite a cool and calm person. Think it's time to head down to the gurdwara and wash some dishes and do some seva.

With Guru's grace I think I had a first experience of jaap entering the heart (wondering if this is what is meant by jaap in the hirda). With Guru's kirpa on most occasions the jaap travels between the Navel and my chest in an up and down motion as I breath. Was given bit of an extra push and it entered the heart literally on the left side. All of a sudden I could feel my heart pumping really strong as if I was having some kind of heart attack. The heart beat became totally synchronised with the jaap, to the point I couldn't recite jaap verbally anymore and became too aware of the heart pumping like it was going to explode. It wanted to speed up the jaap but I slowed my breathing down and the sensation began to reside.

I must admit the first time these new sensation takes place it can totally shake you because one has never experienced them before.

Very strange experience whilst doing simran yesterday. Felt something was spinning round and round inside. Actually made me feel quite dizzy and light headed.

Came across the following pangtis a week ago on Ang 404. I wonder...

God has created Maya of the three qualities; tell me, how can it be crossed over?

My simran battery was becoming a bit flat for the past week or so and it needed bit of kick start. Resumed reading of SGGS alongside simran thoughout the day and low and behold gear has engaged again. Waheguru

Think I had to be told.. as Guru Nanak Dev Ji says

True is the Mansion of Your Presence, O Dear Lord, and True is trade in Your Name.

Trade in Your Name is very sweet; the devotees earn this profit night and day.

Speaking of heart, I'm noticing a weird kind of warmth in the chest recently. It's like when I breath in and out Wahe-Guru is being recitied there. Like my voice has moved into the chest. Just feel like closing my eyes and focusing my dyaan/simran there.

Probably been mentioned before but useful explanation of swas swas simran. I wasn't aware that stage 3 of swas swas simran involved exhaling slightly forcefully through the nostrils to help balance the pavan.
    Stage 1.
Inhale and mentally say Wahe on exhale verbally say Guruuuu
    Stage 2.
Like stage 1 but Guruu more quieter (madhma)
    Stage 3. (Internal Antargat)
Mouth closed breathing through the nose. Wahe on inhale and Guru on exhale both japped mentally but in this stage your forcing the Guruuu exhale out through the nostrils to help sum the pavan/air flow in both nostrils. Noticed few Gurmukhs (Bhai Dharamjit Singh) are reluctant to reveal or encourage you to try this vidi of this simran alone at home, because it can lead to deeper experiences more quickly.  They advise only doing this in the sangat where if one enters a deeper state then they can manage it and your family will not get concerned if you enter a samadhi state and become unresponsive.

I know this gurdwara well. Whilst the sangat were on to a good thing by wanting to do their own santiya class, they should have consulted and had prior agreement from the gurdwara management. We all know you can't just walk into a gurdwara because it has an empty hall and start using it for your own purposes, even if it for a good cause. If there wasn't a overseeing management structure in place there would be chaos in the running of gurdware and everyone would be helping themselves to the facilities.

Videos relating to incident have gone viral on facebook within the Sikh community locally. Personally I think it is being blown well out of proportion. Rather than addressing the core issue the group were facing i.e. not having a place to do their santiya class they are now more interested in defaming the gurdwara by showing videos of police wearing shoes outside the darbar hall and sachkhand. Yes the general sangat are supposed to leave their shoes downstairs but I guess in the case of the police an exception was made by the secretary.
