Well it seems there is discussion into whether Guru Nanak Dev ji was God himself....
if there is discussion about it then people are wondering if he was or wasn't

Only God exists...Gurbani is very clear about it...therefore Guru Nanak Dev ji was....
therefore We all are...therefore everything is...

only our Ego gives us a feeling of being seperate...Ego is amazing in that it allows the experience of the 'many' and allows us to have so many experiences as a seperate entity (illusion)...but problem is in this age Ego is stronger than the knowledge of 'God is the only entity' ... therefore majority of people question Gods existance...and run around aimlessly..

Ego has us fooled and Ego makes us forget of who we really are (God...all of us, and everything, and everything beyond...unlimited)

therefore the Question of 'Was Guru Nanak God himself' is mute...He Was...because Ego was at a complete minimum and connection from the Ego (individual state) to the supreme state was 100% formed. We all have that capability...and thats what Simran is For..Simran - remembering...

Just my thoughts about what Gurbani states...nothing more..

Yep, I guess he's just trying to promote and obviously trying to get white folk in.
Like Bhagat says....'' Non-Sikh-->Non-Sikh dressed like Sikh-->Sikh with pub, cut beard, marriage dress-->Sikh''

He's still sikh to some scale, but if full bearded amritdhari sikhs don't want to class him as some level of sikh, then they are just talibanising sikhi.

Im not sure why he put the wedding outfit on....maybe wearing that with turban and kirpan is the most 'sikh' he has ever felt physically....especially if your a mona.
(When i was mona and got dressed like that for my wedding, it was the most 'royal like singh' feeling that could ever be expressed in my aura at that time!)

The problem is that we let prejudice govern our ego's too easily... the first glance of the news above....we see the word sikh,...then we see pub... then we see the dress up and immediately start nodding our heads!..tut..tut..
The guys not promoting sikhi, he's trying to promote the fact that he appreciates and understands the gora festive season and that this should help bring in some more custom for his business.

Besides, how else does he describe himself or wants the gora to their family?
......Not going to want goray saying ''we going to that pub run by pakis".... or "the brown asian guy's pub''
Most goray are pretty much aware if the brown asian belongs to hindu, muslim or sikh culture and that's how they will label him and his family.

Sikh is the descriptive term that is used to differentiate from muslim and hindus in this sense. It's a good identifier and way for them to categorize the brown asian guys
This is why some goray understand that sikh cultures are different and try adapting to western life and contribute to society whereas pakistani muslims would rather drain the welfare systems.
This is how most of them perceive us differently and appreciate the positive impacts we have made for the economy.

And besides, if he were full amritdhari ....then there would certainly be some questions to raise but we are just jumping the gun here because the word sikh was used !
And Dalsingh is probably aware of just how many full amritdhari sikhs in UK own off-licenses and newsagents.
(for those of you outside UK...off-license is liquor store and newsagents sell tobacco)

I think the topic is going off track.

We are more on issues of men and women, rather than, what a Guru means. We think we elect gurus as in political elections for a particular period of time.

The true Guru is Shabad, the True Guru is Brahmgyani, the True Guru is Gurumukh, the True Guru is the Lord Himself.

And just as Wahiguru has no gender, it is His power, His level of Consciousness which works in that particular body.

It is like a battery, which works the same in a doll, as in the soldier. It is the energy of that battery which makes them work, not the otherwise, that the toys work better, as per how they were designed or the roles to play.

In a siimilar way, the physical body of a woman or the man is not the Guru, which by the way is the topic of this thread. The Guru is not perisahble, the bodies of men or women, are just a handful of dust .... So, as said, Guru, is a power, which can work out His duties at the best, in any conditions, He has no such limits, though limited in disguise, as He is in a physical body which is just a covering

The True Guru, works on the inner planes, to guide the souls back to their True Home, Sach Khand .

Outwardly He only inspires us, to love Him, by doing the real bhakti.

Last, but not the least, it is Wahiguru´s choice, it is His mauj, He can do what He feels like. As said, if He wanted, what to say about human beings, He can make even the stones carry out His Hukum...

So brothers and sisters, sangat, let us not argue on the mayavee coverings(bodies, genders), but pay attention, to what He says to us through those wadbhagee Gurmukhs(irrespective of genders).

To argue about genders of the True gurus, is to question Wahiguru Himself.

Is that not shameful? Our manmukhta, has no limits .....

As long as the creation exists, either men or women, both shall continue to be imperfect beings, only by doing the real bhakti and elevating our consciousness to His level, shall we become perfect, then there shall be no arguments, that men this, or women that, because then, only He will exist.

    Sat Sree Akal.

SAadmin reacted to amar_jkp in Banaras Hindu University And Sikhs
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is one of the oldest and topmost universities of India. A society with the name The Hindu University Society was registered on 15th December, 1911 for the establishment of the BHU. A large sum of money was required to set up this university. Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, a key member of the Hindu University Society, issued an appeal on 15th July, 1911 for donations of one crore of rupees. The Sikhs responded favourably to this appeal. When the Hindu University delegation visited Punjab cities, the Sikh Sangats warmly welcomed the delegation and made generous contributions. Maharaja Ripudaman Singh of Nabha made a donation of Rs. 1,00, 000. Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala donated Rs. 10, 000 and also sanctioned a recurring grant of Rs. 6, 000 per annum to support a Chair on Agricultural Botany. Maharaja Yadavindra Singh of Patiala made a donation of Rs. 5,00,000 for teaching in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering. He also gave a recurring grant of Rs. 24, 000 per annum.

The Banaras University Act was passed on 1st October, 1915. About a year before the passing of this Act, the Hindu University Society decided to make a beginning of the University by laying the foundation of Sanskrit College by a Sikh saint Sant Attar Singh Mastuane Vaale (1866-1927). In May, 1914 Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya went to Punjab to invite Sant Attar Singh personally. As a mark of respect to Sant Attar Singh and caring little for summer heat, Pandit Malaviya removed his shoes at Sangrur railway station and walked bare-foot on the sandy and hot road for about 8 kms to reach the Ashram of Sant Attar Singh at Mastuana. After reaching, he conveyed to Sant Attar Singh the request of the Hindu University Society for laying the foundation and requested him to perform five Akhand Paths (non-stop recitations) of Guru Granth Sahib before the foundation ceremony. Sant Attar Singh agreed to reach Banaras a few days before the foundation laying ceremony to be held on 24th December, 1914. Maharaja Ripudaman Singh of Nabha, brought Sant Attar Singh to Banaras by his private royal train. Near the site, where the foundation of Sanskrit College was to be laid, a beautiful open 'pandal' was erected and continuous reading of Guru Granth Sahib (Akhandpaths) for 10 days was done in a special tent. After performing of 'Ardas' (Sikh Religious Prayer), Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner brought the building material in a silver 'tagari' (plate). Maharaja Prabhu Narayan of Kashi State offered 11 gold bricks. Sant Attar Singh with a golden 'krandi' put lime in the foundation (buniad) of Sanskrit college and placed 11 gold bricks on the lime. After the ceremony, the Maharaja of Kashi requested Sant Attar Singh to stay at Kashi for one week. Out of great respect for Sant Attar Singh, he requested him to sit on his throne on which he never sat considering it a seat of Lord Vishwanath. On the occasion of the foundation laying ceremony, a Hindu saint of Niranjani Akhara, Asi Ghat Bhadaini, composed a poem which was later published. One line of the poem was "Hindu University neev pawitar Attar Hari ne dhari kar se" (the foundation of the Banaras Hindu University was laid with the hands of Sant Attar Singh Ji"). The above account of the foundation laying ceremony is based on the description given in the book "Jiwan Katha, Gurmukh Piare Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj, Part I" (Life story of Gurmukh Piare Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj) written by Sant Teja Singh (M.A. Punjab, L.L.B. Punjab, A.M. Harward, U.S.A.).

After the passing of the BHU Act on 1st October, 1915, the foundation-stone laying ceremony of the BHU was performed by the British Viceroy Lord Hardinge on February 4, 1916. A fortnight before this ceremony, religious ceremonies were started which continued till the evening of February 8, 1916. These ceremonies included Sikh religious ceremonies too. An Akhand Path (non-stop recitation) of Guru Granth Sahib was performed near the site where foundation-stone laying ceremony was to be conducted. The foundation ceremony of 4th February was followed by lectures by distinguished experts on 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th February. The closing function on 8th of February, 1916 consisted of religious ceremonies which again included Sikh religious ceremonies. Maharaja Ripudaman Singh of Nabha attended the closing function in person. At 3:00 PM in the afternoon Bhai Arjun Singh and Sant Amar Singh made recitations from Guru Granth Sahib in the School Hall. These recitations were followed by an address by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in Hindi on the Hindu religion in general and Guru Granth Sahib in particular.

The Banaras University Act, passed on 1st October, 1915, came into force on 1st April, 1916. As per this Act, 14 heads of local administrations in British India became Ex-officio Patrons of the University whereas 18 Ruling Princes or Chiefs were appointed to be the Patrons of the University. These Patrons included two Sikh Maharajas, namely, Maharaja Ripudaman Singh of Nabha and Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala. Further, as per the Act, highest governing body named as Court was constituted for the university. After the inclusion of the names of the elected members on August 12, 1916, the total strength of the Court became 140 members and out of these, the following 8 were Sikhs:

    1. Maharaja Ripudaman Singh of Nabha
    2. Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala
    3. Sardar Bachan Singh, Education Minister, Nabha
    4. Bhai Arjun Singh of Bagrian, District Ludhiana
    5. Baba Gurbaksh Singh Bedi of Kullar, District Rawalpindi
    6. Major-Genral Bakshi Puran Singh of Kapurthala
    7. Dewan Lilaram Singh of Hyderabad (Sindh)
    8. Bhai Sardul Singh, Editor, Sikh Review, Delhi

Presently, the Court consists of only 51 members out of which 30 are nominated by the President of India. In December, 2005, the then President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, nominated the author of this article as the Member of the Court of BHU for a period of three years (2006-2008).

If i've read this correctly.... this was after anand karaj and the bride must have come up for extra photos from langar hall ?
OK.. if that is so, then the wedding photographer would have been familiar with the ceremony, maryada, where he can stand... no socks ...etc...etc..... but then how would he not have known that this is sacrilege ??
All photographers that I have come across in darbar are usually very much aware of what is and what isn't allowed !!
Then what the hell happened here ?

and where was anyone else, would the bride be left completely unattended ??
There are too many additional questions that should be addressed.

I think that just as gorey do wedding rehearsals before hand..... we should do something very similar which is NOT a rehearsal but which is an education process for the couple to explain the significance of anand karaj.
The gurdwara comittee or gyani jees should take care of this.
Both bride and groom have to understand what the guru is and what the REAL marriage of MIND with SHABAD GURU is actually ALL about.

Problem is that in other faiths, a couple get married in some religious setting where they assume or accept that God is the witness.
It's kind of like where 2 souls or 2 jots become ONE in the presence of God.....so to speak.

However, in Sikhi, it is completely different and unique....in the sense that 2 jots don't merge with each other directly but they merge with Satguru.
The marriage is about 2 people merging their MIND together with the Shabad.... the 2 jots don't become one with each other, but the 2 jots are supposed to be merging into One with the shabad of Guru.
This needs to implemented and addressed with some good education tools.

What's done is done, we can't reverse that. But we can make sure that education is given practically before hand to make sure this never occurs again.... anywhere !

Due to the fact that I actively fought for Sikh women to be able to tie dastar in uniform in the Canadian military, and I consequently became the first woman to do so in the Royal Canadian Navy, my sangat has given me siropa last weekend. My story had actually made it around the world on many websites, but also in print in several Indian newspapers, including the Times of India. I had no idea that my sangat were doing this, until it happened! I was so overwhelmed and filled with surprise and emotion that I was actually in tears when they gave it to me.

Now, I am wondering what to do with the actual cloth? I read that some use them as a keski, but the material s really stiff and thick so I don't think it would work well. Right now I have it with my nitnem gutka. I don't want to inadvertently do anything disrespectful with it... so for now I wrapped my gutka in it and keeping it with my other religious things. So what should I do with it??

I attached the Times Of India story...

p.s. in case you are wondering why the different name, Satkirin is just the alias I have been using for some time on forums. When I took a Sikh name, H was the letter and so I am legally 'Harkiran' Wanda Kaur. (Just in case anyone had questions why the name was different on there from my alias)

I don't think you did understand correctly: I wasn't specifically talking about Ganda Singh's work, just making general point. But (on a related note) even Ganda Singh had the humility and sense to say:

“But man is prone to error. For this reason, in the service of learned scholars, I request that they graciously inconvenience themselves to write and send [details of any] perceived errors, so that in their correction and in the light of scrutiny, these can be deliberated upon.”

But here you got people who would throw a document/manuscript in your boothi and demand you adhere to it and start childishly casting aspersions on your loyalty should you apply some prudence or caution. That might be how things go down in rural pendu Panjab but me, I'm from the big bad city and I don't need to be told everything second hand because I'm not scared, averse or incapable of looking at source material myself.

Knowledge should be continually built upon.

I don't follow 'Sikhism' which is a product of Christian imperialism in India; I try and follow Sikhi which is grander than dogmatic lists of rules and factional politics.

Go just to see what goes on in the world. Tomorrow your daughter or son might ask you if they can go: at least you'll have a true picture of what goes on.

It's this locking yourself out from the real world that creates Sikhs who are totally clueless.

    Dear Saroj Bahl,
this is true what you say.

People do all that you have mentioned, simply because they do not follow Gurmat as per Bani.

The Bani says: there is only one Truth, Wahiguru (Ik Onkar, Satnam). And the way to meet and merge in Him, is through His Simran alone, no other way.

But then too we manmukhs do many many other things which we see them being done since we were born...Nobody stops to see and check if they are acting and behaving as per the very principles of Gurmat .....

So naturally, we have gone astray, and stepped deep in the manmukhta and maya, taking our beliefs as truth, that is why, there is so much hatred and violence.... If only some wadbhageee could read, understand and follow Gurmat truly, believe me, there would be no such abnormal situations....

But unfortunately, as long as this creation goes on, these stupid things will continue to happen. Because this creation is imperfect, and if has to continue, these things will continue happening.

You want to get true happiness and peace? Just step out from this bhavsagar and reach Parbraham, then you will experience these Truths of Love, Mercy and Grace of Wahiguru....

We are foolish people, we did not spare even Guru Sahibans , Mahapurukhs, like Christ or Sachay Patshah Guru Arjun Dev Maharaj...

And even today we continue abusing such noble and humble souls....foolish human beings.

We are more in love with the jewel boxes(religions), which have no real value by themselves, and are just as good as decorations only, and on the contrary, we ignore the real valuable Jewel of Nam or Shabad within us....

I think the easiest way that I came across gurmukh and manmukh being explained was........
    GUR-MUKH= Gurus-Mouth(mukh)
So what is uttered and what comes from guru's mouth ?........simply the TRUTH....all Sat..in it's purity.
When someone is Gur-Mukh, then they are living, breathing, following and in full conduct with the words that come from the Guru's Mukh.
In contrast, when someone is MAN-MUKH= Mann's Mouth......... then they are following and living in conduct with what their MANN(Mind) tells them...Man-mukh follows instructions from Mukh(mouth) of the Mann.
And this Mann is hugely influenced by maya and encased in the strangle-hold of Kaal.
Getting out of kaal's desh, then you are within A-kaal,...Akaal purakhs bondaries.....therefore, gone from Man-mukh to Gur-mukh.
Biq question is.... Is it Mann vs Guru or is the Mann bad...some people will ask ?
No, mann is not bad but it's LOST in maya... that's the problem....Mann has forgotten it's source, whereas Guru comes as pure, clean and and as truthful existence from this source.
To add, we continually add more and more dirt on our Mann on a daily basis. The precious jewel or jyot is still there gleaming in it's purity but we have put layer upon layer of dirt on top it.
That's why gurbani says 'Mann tu jyot saroop hai, apna mool paichan''...oh mind, you are the embodiment of jyot, recognize your own source and origin...
This means that we have to work to recognize our own source of the mind.....find that origin... that place is the home...the home of sach-khand, waheguru's darbar,....the nijh mahal..

Vaadiyan! To all Sikhs and the entire world. Shining light in an extremely troubled time.

    ADDITION:

I did not have much time earlier to write about this auspicious day but I will now.

Men like Guru Nanak Dev ji are true Yug Purush's, if I may borrow a term from my own religion, men who by their mere presence in a particular age undoe the evil effects.

I'm told from my own granths that when the "shabad falls into disrepute" then the Supreme Lord takes birth to re-establish the law.

Guru Nanak was truly an incarnation of the Cosmic Energy that prevails in the universe and had all the qualities of a true Sat Guru.

In the presence of the satguru; Knowledge flourishes (Gyana raksha); Sorrow diminishes (Dukha kshaya); Joy wells up without any reason (Sukha aavirbhava); Abundance dawns (Samriddhi); All talents manifest (Sarva samvardhan).

And I think I spelled Vaadayan wrong!

    PHILOSOPHY AND MARYADA
[Gur Kee Murat Man Mein Dhian]
A true lover of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib yearns to continue beholding the holy vision of the luminous form of Lord Guru Nanak for the whole of his life. For such contemplators and meditators, the radiant form of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib keeps on flashing in their mental and spiritual visions and awakens and sustains Divinity in their hearts, fully aglow.
For true lovers of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib, envisioning Him, is the highest delight of their eyes, it is the light and joy of their soul. How can they live without seeing the soul of their soul, Sri Guru Nanak Sahib even for a moment.
Delight of perception of Truth, the beloved Lord Guru Nanak, frees one from the false delight derived from the worldly objects of senses; frees one from lust and greed.
This vision of the luminous form of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib awakens in one the ultimate love of the Beloved Lord and facilitates breaking off all worldly and transient bonds.

Antar Guru Aradhna Jihva Jap Gur Naun
Netri Satgur Pekhna Servni Sunana Gurnaun
Satgur Seti Ratia Dargeh Paaiai Thhaon
    Sri Guru Granth Sahib (517)
With contemplation on the Guru in the heart, with the tongue repeating the Name of the Guru, with the eyes beholding the True Guru, with the ears hearing the Name of the Guru, thus totally saturated with the Love of the True Guru, one attains place of honour in the Lord's Mansion (Sach Khand).
A Gursikh therefore utilizes all his senses, all his faculties as God-given instruments for the sake of the Divine and for the attainment of the Divine.
The holy hymn reflects and reveals total harmony of internal and external faculties in Guru worship culminating in perpetual Guru consciousness. Soul, mind and body in their totality are dedicated to the love and worship of Satguru. Every part and faculty of this physical body is utilized and dedicated to the service and worship of the Satguru. Such is the wonderful state of mind and body of a love-smitten sikh.
Satguru Seti Ratia Dargeh Paaiai Thhaon - Unless one sails in Guru consciousness, unless one is totally possessed by Guru consciousness, unless a sikh's love and his own separate individuality has totally melted into the lotus feet of the Satguru, he cannot claim to have grasped the essence of this holy hymn.
All faculties, external and internal, physical, mental and spiritual should be directed towards attaining uninterrupted Guru consciousness. A combination of external and internal worship is necessary to achieve this blissful goal.
The essential spirit and theme of this sublime hymn is the attainment of continuous Guru consciousness.
Constant Guru consciousness is the prime pre-requisite to find a place of honour at His Lotus Feet in Sach Khand.
This is a wonderful blessed state in which one is totally possessed by Guru consciousness. This blessed state is constant, remains unbroken by the Grace of Satguru. Self-surrender and prema-bhakti in this state is complete in which a Sikh remains in an ecstatic grip and possession of Satguru.
Soul and body in their totality are dedicated to the Lord through love and service. The Lord permeates both soul and body. He permeates each and every pore of the body. Every pore of the body, every function and activity of such a true sikh is self speaking and radiates out the pure love of the Satguru.
As a true sikh yearns and thirsts for continuously drinking the Nectar of Satguru's love through these precious senses, i.e. eyes, ears and tongue, he remains in perpetual gratitude to the Lord for granting him a human birth with these senses of perception. Pure and blessed are the eyes that never get tired of envisioning the Lord Guru Nanak, pure and blessed are the ears and the tongue which never get tired of hearing and reciting Gurbani.
