When I was asked to do a shabad jaap the vidi was to put a glass of water near by, say the jaap loud enough so that the sound reaches the water. After finishing the jaap drink the shabad amrit.

If doing jaap out aloud put your dhyan just in front of your mouth where you can hear the sound. Make the mind sit in that spot and listen to what comes out. You will notice when your doing it with 100% focus or when your just japping with the mouth but the mind has gone off in flights of thought. Bring it back to this spot and make it sit and listen.

Best of luck bhaji, may God bless you and your family. Raab tuhade sir te hath rakh ke tuhade too path karvave.

Let me request you the following that I've learnt personally. I'm NOT suggesting you anything. Just merely stating what have been instructed by many Sants and Mahatamas.
Do Mool-mantar till "Nanak Hose Bhe Sach". Try doing 6 malas everyday of 108 beads for One Full Year. It will roughly be 236520. Do NOT miss a day. Nice to have: Would be great if you could do it, otherwise it's okay.
If possible, make sure that you do your mala each day on the same time and same place. If possible, use the mala 108 + 1 (Meru bead: It is the quiding bead, the one that marks the beginning and end of the mala.) beads. The following is NOT suggested by Sant (I haven't heard), but based upon the facts that these malas were extensively used in the past and special significance of wool in energy.
If possible, use the mala made of white wool.

As per recorded bachan of  Baba Ishar Singh Ji Kaleran, the maryada of doing atleast one sehaj path or equivalent is ancient and began since Guru Gobind Singh Ji's times, and was made pargat by Baba Nand Singh Ji. Sant Baba Isher Singh Ji Rara Sahib wale also recommended devotees to try to do atleast one sehaj path or equivalent in a month.
This is a minimum, and to get started on the spiritual path. This is like homework and beginner stages. Once you progressed, antaryami mahapurush gave you further instructions and techniques based on your avastha.

JYFI, AKJ is not a PURATAN Samprada. It started during the British times in Punjab.
*Some of the Puratan Sampradas are as follows:
Gyani Sampradai (Taksaals associated with Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh jee Maharaaj and Shaheed Baba Deep Singh jee Maharaaj) Nihang Singhs Sevapanthis Bhai Daya Singh Samprada (Rara Sahib, Harkhowal, etc) Nanaksar

    Dargahi Ticket

Divinely commissioned and appointed by His great Master to spread the gospel of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, He set out to scatter that unique flavour far and wide, the like of which has not been seen so far, and is far beyond the limits of human endeavour.

He unfolded the Supreme grandeur of Sri Guru Granth Sahib splendidly and glorified the eternal Sri Guru Granth Sahib as the living Guru Nanak magnificently. Blessing of Sri Guru Granth Sahib was supreme and He advised everyone to invoke that blessing by completing one path of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in a month in the following manner:

Complete recitation of the whole of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in a month.

Complete 50 paths of Sri Sukhmani Sahib in a month; recite 2 paths of Sri Sukhmani Sahib daily.

Complete 250 paths of Jap Ji Sahib in a month; recite 10 paths of Jap Ji Sahib daily.

Complete 180 Malas (Rosary Mala of 108 beads) of Mool Mantra (from Ekonkar to Nanak Hosi Bhi Such) in a month; do six malas daily.

Complete 80 Malas daily of Gur Mantar 'Waheguru'; 20 Malas of Waheguru if the Nam is recited four times on each bead.

Complete 160 Malas daily of Ram (Nam); 40 Malas if Ram is recited four times on each bead

A Mohammedan was advised to practice and recite the name of Allah on each bead as above.

Hundreds of crores of Sri Guru Granth Sahib's paths were thus distributed as the most blessed Parshad to millions of devotees in His life time and are continuing uninterrupted since then.

He, thus, brought the supreme blessing of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the living Sri Guru Nanak Sahib within easy comprehension, reach and grasp of everyone, educated, uneducated, lettered, unlettered, literate, illiterate and simple village folks. Every one recited Amrit Nam and sang the glory of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib in this simple and easy way.

That was the grand purpose behind His holy advent. Uniqueness and greatness of the Eternal Glory of Sri Guru Granth Sahib was unveiled in its totality. The precious treasure of Lord's Name was thrown open to all. It was so simple, easily understandable within the grasp and practice of simple village folk. He freely distributed this Dargahi ticket destined for Sach Khand.

Though He physically disappeared in August 1943 from this earthly scene, He perennially flows as Eternal presence in this very Dargahi Ticket given as Prashad by Him. Lakhs of refugees from either side during the partition of 1947 experienced the miraculous power of this Dargahi ticket, Dargahi Name with the Eternal presence of the Saviour Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj, and were saved. Such was the unique power of Nam He distributed.

In possession of this unique Prashad, Divine Ticket, they passed through the most dreaded naked dance of death, but not a single person blessed with this celestial ticket could be injured or harmed or died an unnatural death.

All Glory to Mahan Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj.

Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj thus blessed millions with unique Prashad of the Lord. Unique Prashad of redeeming Gur Mantar, Mul Mantar, Japji, Sukhmani Sahib, Ram Nam and in addition the paths of Bhagwat Gita and Holy Quran Sharif were distributed as Parshad to Hindus and Muslims in same congregations.

Nam was not the privilege of a selected few. It was open to all It was distributed freely to everyone without any consideration of caste, religion and creed.

By thus propagating the Gospel of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Lakhs of illiterate, simple and plain-hearted villagers were able to feel and experience the spiritual satisfaction of attaining the Grace of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Babaji had thus brought lofty ideals of personal service and worship of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and resultant spiritual attainment within the immediate reach and grasp of millions of completely illiterate folk. Only those who practice, know how wonderful and rewarding this spiritual Sadhana is!

These days Sant Samaj also has a political party of Panthik Morcha as they are trying to get rid of the corruption done by Prakash Singh Badal over the last number of years and other sikh groups who crete distrust in authentic Bani.

Although I am not sure about Sant Samaj's linage as from Maharaja Ranjit Singh, or if the Sant Samaj that I'm thinking about is even the same.

Mid 1900's SGPC started to implement a lot of new ideas and started making changes in Sikhi. This resulted in much confusion within the Panth and caused for many splits, and other things to start up. One of the major and most dominating issue of the time was the SGPC's implentation of Pad-Ched printing of Maharaj Saroops.

This "noise" being made, led to the main sevadaars, great and respected Saints, and leaders of the major Jathaybandi's etc to come together to oppose such actions that where being taken by the SGPC.

The various Jatha's and samparada's of the time got together with a common goal and had several meetings at different venues to do veechar on this issue. Such meetings occured at Sri Amritsar Sahib, Damdama Sahib, Keeratpur Sahib, Rara Sahib and one of the largest at Bhinder Kalaan on the 11th of September, 1959, at which time all the big time saints of the day came together and created a committee, which consisted of the following Mahpursh:

    1. Sant Baba Hari Singh Ji Kahaarpurieea
    2. Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji Bhindranwale
    3. Sant Ishar Singh Ji Rara Shib

Lets not forget that Muslim Rababis and Dhadis performed in each and every Gurus darbar, and were Hazuri Raagis at Harimandhir Sahib up until parition, with the curtain finally falling in the early 1960's when when Sikhs all of a sudden discovered 'Gurmat'!

These Rababis and Dhadis also did Gurbani and ithihaasik parchaar.

    Neo,

I don't think anyone has ever advocated that Monas whether Sikh or non-Sikh not be allowed to do sewa whether it is in the langar, gatka or playing the tabla. The dispute has been over whether monas should be allowed to do Kirtan from a Gurdwara stage. Doing Kirtan is a form of Parchar whereby the Kirtaniya is urging the Sangat to follow the words of the Gurus. How can someone do this yet not himself follow the Guru's words?

It is based on 10% (Daswandh) of the day, which is approximately 2.5 hrs (10% of 24 hrs). A Sikh must donate at least 10% of his net income towards charitable causes and spend a minimum of 2.5 hrs daily, on his spiritual development.

Do you enjoy doing it slow with love? Is there any particular Gurbani (out of the seven), which you enjoy reciting it slowly, the most?

Have you tried helping out any needy people (homeless, poor, etc) in your area? Most likely, poverty is on a rise in our country (Canada).
You already know that, Selfless service of Humanity is a core Sikh principle. Don't be disappointed, if you cannot do Sewa at a Gurughar. Try to do Sewa of humanity., if you have time

kamai is earned through seeva simran and santsangat. it is kept through keeping rahit. it is lost through indulgence in vikaars. to reach the end point requires a great deal of kamai. in each life, at some point, we pick up where we left off. the storehouse of karma is burned up by kamai, but some karams have to be experienced no matter what. in each janam, a chunk of good karm is used up and manifests in good things we have, like house, family, good opportunities, and a chunk of bad karm. next janam, we may have it as easy, maybe easier, or maybe waaaaaaaaaaay worse dependiing on our karams. once those good karam 'chunks' are gone, they're gone. our life, and the last thought at the moment of death, determine our next life. in the end, guru ji choooses to grant us mukti (and beyond). all gains are to be looked at as his grace.

our ultimate aim is to become enlightened (one with god, a bhramgiani) but remain in Guru ji's charan. basically, not be selfish, be His. mukti is a small thing in front of this.

Anything can have a spiritual significance if you give it spiritual significance. If you don't give any spiritual significance then no matter how spiritually significant it is, it won't have any spiritual significance.

Now about why people use them:
Dhoof smells good and when you are trying to minimize distractions then it helps to mask bad odours with good ones. Smell plays a huge part as it can subconsciously irritate us or ease us. We want to be at ease when meditating and so dhoof helps with that.

Mala is a timer. Back then they didn't have watches and clocks that went beep beep. So they counted time on their mala. They knew 108 beads with X rotations of the mala = Y hours (for them it was position of the sun). The hand can easily tell when the mala completes a rotation because of the fluffy bit or big bead depending on what mala you use. And so you can train yourself to automatically keep track of time while you meditate deeply with your eyes closed.

So are you missing out? You won't know until you try them. Do the 30-day test.

Santren Daya Singh Ji Katha is highly highly recommended. It is for advanced meditators. His katha is based on his personal experiences not through book reading.
The thing with listening to Katha is that if you do not follow the teachings or try to inculcate them in your daily life, it will lose its effect in long run. The real benefit comes when after listening one tries to follow it in practical life.  When I was 18, I used to listen to katha by Giani Thakur Singh ji, 3-4 hours on end, it did make a difference esp with my Santhya.  Although I still have not been able to follow the things that he used to mention like :
100s paths of Japji Sahib, Jaap Sahib, Anand Sahib Paths of Chaupai for getting darshan of Guru Gobind Singh JI 1.25 Lakh repetition of Moolmantar, 36 lakh repetition of Moolmantar, Sava Lakh Jap of Japji Sahib Paths of Chandi di var, or Shastar Naam Mala or Brahm Kavach, Jaap of Guru Gayatri Mantra 5 paths Sukhmani everyday for 5 years
